Roe Fusion — Restaurant in Sierra Madre

Nice service and ambiance. However, the food is tasty but quite salty and extremely overpriced for the quality. I had been looking forward to this place but it's nothing to write home about. The food is clearly catered towards non-Asian people. They are missing a lot of the tasty ingredients that I would normally expect and look forward to at a Japanese restaurant. Ironically for a place called Roe, I didn't even see any ikura on the menu. They don't even have nigiri sushi, just extremely overpriced rolls. Both the food and the selection were not what I would expect from an authentic Japanese place, but that's fine as they state that their goal is a fusion restaurant. But then in that case, what are they fusing with? I didn't see anything that was novel or interesting. There was a baked crab mac and cheese so maybe that's fusing with something that's non-Japanese? Nonetheless, the people were very nice and the space is comfortable. The food was still tasty, just not extraordinary. And it's family friendly and would be fine for kids. Not overly upscale, could still be a nice casual dinner. It would be fine if their prices were significantly lower but I found the price quite pricey because you're getting the quality of a standard izakaya (perhaps with more limited options) and the prices were...

The food deserves a better score, but our service was terrible. Multiple tables sat after us were served before us, our drinks took 20 minutes to get to the table and sat for 10 at the bar. My ribeye was delivered a few minutes after that, and had clearly been sitting for 15 minutes or more - it was cold.

Every server in the restaurant passed by, seeing my plate pushed to the edge of the table, uneaten. Several made eye contact. Nobody said anything.

When I finally told the server to take it back, she said she'd "fix it", and when I said I didn't want it reheated, she said she'd have another made. At that point my date night was at an end, and my wife and I needed to get back to our kids. So no steak for daddy.

No manager stopped by. Nothing was offered to improve the situation. Just bad service uninterested in their customers.

Excellent service. Our server was the most patient person ever, and she was helpful and knowledgeable about the menu.

The veggie rainbow roll was unique - roast peppers and avocado exterior with cold mushroom interior. The fillet mignon fried rice was a little salty and could use more steak pieces. The seared smoked salmon appetizer was more raw than I would have liked because I don't eat raw fish and thought it'd be cooked more on the side. There was no detectable sear. It's also a small portion. The tempura cauliflower batter is too thick. The salmon tempura handroll was meh. The salmon portion was kind of small and the flavors were kind of lacking. The miso cod was excellent and had a larger portion than I expected.

Overall, for a person who doesn't eat raw fish, I probably won't come back, but the service...
