Red's Barbecue & Grillery — Restaurant in Simi Valley

After getting an oil change we debated what we should do next. Being we’re fat boys my friend took me to a spot that was good. He started telling me about some rolls. I guess like the garden place has bread sticks and well known for them but hat is how Reds. I like to challenge places like this. Not because they have one thing down does it mean all their menu is top notch. With that being said I ordered the mesquite burger which came with two sides. I choose scallops and Mac n cheese. How can you blame I said I am a fat boy. I know it’s not the healthiest but they are my favorite and it they serve it I’m ordering it. So I ordered mesquite burger rare, yes I said that right rare as in bloody pink. Like I said if they offer it , I’m ordering it. Now standards are pretty low meaning there are some mistakes and I’ll let it slide some having the restaurant redeem themselves by fixing the issue. Now it was close to closing so I get scraping the bottom of the pot. I’m not going to expect a new batch when all they are going to serve is a spoon full. But I got to say if certain foods are breaking down say “we ran out” and save yourself having the customer getting an impression of the food. I’ll explain. Mac n cheese breaks down making the cheese get sort of hard the oils or grease in the Mac start seperating and even though the Mac is full of liquid it can still be dry and the way it clumps. You get one spoon full and the bowl comes attached to it he spoon as if hanging for dear life. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has eaten old Mac cheese. Further more you leave in heat and it gets a sort of taste on the cheese. So how can you come back from that?the scallops were not any better. The one thing I thought was going to be different is the mesquite burger. But no. The burger was not special you can tell the meat was some store bought patty. Maybe a big box brand. But had no flavor. The burger did not condiment as in ketchup or mustard . The only reason it was not dry was because of the tomato and the grease on the cheese. As rare as the burger was it was dry pics included. Now for some of the plus sides of this Yes!!!! They have some really good rolls tasty and buttery with garlic seasoning on it. They are sooooo goood! With some ranch dressing to go with the roll OMG!!!! The reason this place got so many stars is because this review was redeemed by the rollls. Not saying all on here menu is alright. The other thing that surprised me was the cauliflower hot wings. They were good like really good. I was tricked into eating something healthy. Now the server made everything so much better. I haven’t laughed that hard. He was really positive. If you are having a bad day he would be my go to person to get cheered up. This review is for the To-Go portion of the business. I think the ratings speak for themselves, that is, receiving a Good instead of a Very Good or Excellent. You ask why not something better than simply a Good review, well let me explain. I ordered one full and one half Try-Tip Salad to go. I was given a time estimate as to when I might expect to receive my order. They exceeded their estimate by half! You may think this was good, but receiving less than what I ordered is less time is not good. I should have double checked their work since they apparently do not check themselves as was evident by my order not including the rolls. Discovering the omission after you've driven several miles to your distention was madding not only to myself, but to all of the people for whom this lunch was purchased. After eating lunch I stopped back by the business to let them know of their error. They didn't seemed to be surprised. The lady I spoke to was apologetic and offered to give me the missing rolls. Although the offer was genuine, it could not have eased the disappointment we all felt as we were eating lunch. Bottom line here is assume they will make mistakes and double check their work before you leave the takeout counter. Back to the ratings. The food was only good because the meat had a lot of chewy grizzle in it. The avocado was not cut up, but consisted of a half an avocado for the full salad and a quarter of an avocado for the half salad. The artichoke hearts were only cut in half. Although this may take away from the amount of time it takes to prepare the order, it leaves me with all the ingredients thrown into a plastic container to be cut up and mix together before anyone can begin to eat them. The decor was strictly business like in appearance, that is, there was nothing in the takeout area that was not used to conduct business. In other words, there was no decor. Even the ceiling titles were painted black so as not to show the grease and dust that accumulates as a natural part of the kitchen and food preparation area. The service was good for a "fast food" take out business. Being fast, but lowering the quality of the service, does not necessarily go hand in hand. The one thing that this restaurant has going for itself is there is a lot of room for improvement. Update to my review... Went to Red's to inquire about the results from the health department. They use to alpha grade and you had to display it. Well there was a sign behind the hostess desk that said to speak with manager if you had questions. I told the hostess that I wanted to know about their grade. She went to ask someone and came back and just said they don't have to do that. That was it. Manager never came out like sign suggested and the hostess was do flippant and then ignored me. Sadly, I LOVE your new cheesecake but this event told me that nothing has changed. My 2 friends and I would have loved eating there that day, as we had been coming there since 1997. Sadly, we won't go there ever again. We are seniors now and cannot chance getting food poisoning. Plus, as stated above, service gets a d-.

Prior review: So happy that Red's food and service hasn't changed....still the best tri tip, spinach salad and Chinese chicken salad. Staff are always amazing. And you haven't raised your prices so that they are out of reach. This means I can eat out more often. Thank you for staying...
