On Saturday October 19, my husband and I stopped for lunch in downtown Slidell LA at the Beignet Au Lait. On the way there, I called to verify that they had outside tables and whether dogs were allowed outside their establishment. The woman who answered the phone assured me without hesitation that dogs were allowed. When we arrived, I got to the restaurant door with our dog before my husband. The door to the restaurant was open when we arrived, and my happy dog looked inside the door. I said, “No, you can’t go inside” and our dog and I sat down at a small table just outside the door. My husband then joined me at the table. The woman inside (the owner?) then came to the door and closed it without saying anything to us or asking if we would like any water or a menu. We thought that was odd, but after a minute I went inside where I looked around and did not see anyone. I looked for a paper menu to take outside so we could decide what to order. When the woman spoke to me, she seemed to be keeping as far away from me as possible, staying way back in the kitchen. I asked her about a menu. She said I could take one from one of the tables. I asked her about ordering, and she still kept her distance, and said we could order inside.
Once we decided what to order, I went back inside and ordered our meal. When I moved towards the back where I thought I needed to pay, she stopped me and told me where to stand further away and in front of her to pay. I told her that she did not seem very welcoming. She said from a distance, “I don’t like other people’s dogs.” That was really strange, because when she told us we could bring our dog, it did not seem to be a problem.
After this, while we waited outside for our order, several different friendly women stopped by to talk with us and our dog, petting him, and enjoying his calm, sweet, warm nature.
When the woman/owner came out with our food, she stayed as far away from us as possible when she handed us our food. I asked a couple of the women speaking with us if they had been at the restaurant before. One of them told us that she comes there often because the food is so good. When I mentioned that the woman seemed rather cold and hostile to us, she was surprised. Apparently this same women/owner was always “sweet” to them. This confirmed our suspicion that she must have had a problem – not so much with our dog - but with the fact that my husband is black and I am white. We were quite disgusted with her attitude and behavior.
This is just to let future customers know that racism appears to be alive and well in Beignet Au Lait, 1071 Robert Blvd, Suite 5, Slidell, LA. Although the food was very good, the customer service was...
Read moreThis morning, when I stopped to drop off my kilt for dry cleaning at Tan's Alterations, I decided to grab some beignets for my young Son, and a coffee for his Mother. So, I popped into Beignet Au Lait, which is practically next door to Tan's. I gave the lady my order. which in turn she instructed me to have a seat. Which I did, right by the small desk, which serves as the checkout counter. After awhile, I had to stand up, as my back was hurting me. A young lady nearby, also stood up, saying something to me about taking a credit card. I have nerve deafness, and did not hear her clearly, I attempted to hand her my debit card. A look of amused shock came over her face, at which time, we both realize our misunderstanding. I told her, it was an easy mistake to made, as none of the employees wore neither a uniform or ID badge. The woman who took my order appeared, and brusquely stated that none of her employees wore uniforms. This was the third time that I had been to this establishment. I resumed my wait. Another lady came from behind the screen, and asked if I need help, I told her that I was waiting for my order. It was about twenty minutes that I had been waiting. People came in to pick up their take out orders and left. Another gentleman came in and placed an order. Not long after that, the other lady came out with a white paper bag and handed it to the other gentleman. He look in his bag, and left. I was still waiting for my order to appear. The owner came out, and ask the other lady who she gave the last order to. I replied, "She gave it to the other man who was just here." The owner asked if I'd be willing to take the other man's order. I replied that I would, that my family was waiting in the car. Instead of giving me the other order, she began to remake my order. While the beignets and coffee were excellent, the service and owners attitude leave much...
Read moreI went to this breakfast spot Saturday September 14 at 11 am and i experienced the worst customer service ever by the owner of the establishment herself. I handed the woman my card to pay for my order and she put my card down on the counter for me to pick up myself. she did the same thing with the receipt and pen i used to sign it. There was no greeting when she seen me nor was there a thank you or anything. The prices are crazy high which is like whatever but if you charging an arm and leg for a simple caramel frappe and bacon egg and cheese croissant i should at least not have to feel as though Im BOTHERING you for simply trying to support your business. This isn’t the first time I’ve been there it will most definitely be the last but this was just the worst I’ve experienced having going there. The woman never speaks and she’s never kind to her customers but I’ve always brushed it off. The owner replied with some lame excuse, she never apologized for her actions or the way she made a paying customer feel. I will never be spending my money there again which really bothers me because as a black women I love supporting black businesses but the owner of this establishment has some type of things she’s going through at home or something because every time without a fail, she is so rude...
