We used Marguerite's Cakes for our wedding and groom's cakes. Our past experiences with them have been that the cakes are generally very good, and they are a local bakery. We wanted to support them and we knew we would get a good cake.
Our cake tasting consisted of six miniature cakes, and they were delicious. The owner talked with us while we sampled the cakes and asked what we wanted. We gave him some pictures, and he gave us a quote. It was quite expensive, but we were very impressed with the quality of the cakes. We chose our flavors, signed a contract, and paid a deposit. They even boxed up the remainder of the cake samples for us to take home, free of charge.
The decorator in charge of our cakes contacted us about a week or so before the wedding to confirm flavors and colors, and ask about any last-minute changes. All seemed to be going well.
Our cakes were a standard three-tier wedding cake, and a groom's cake modeled after Mississippi State's Davis Wade Stadium. As you can see from the attached picture, the word "Mississippi" is misspelled on the cake. This would normally not be a big deal, but considering the groom's cake alone was several hundred dollars, and both cakes together were over $1200, we felt like there should be a bit more attention to detail. And as you can see from the picture, the general shape of the stadium is good, but there's not a lot of detail there.
In regards to the cake itself - we were told that some of the cake would be rice crispies instead of actual cake because of the complexity of the design. We were fine with this. As it turned out, only the field was actual cake, and the rest were rice crispies treats. This was pretty disappointing as well - we felt like we should be getting more cake than that.
The irritating part about all of this is the non-existent customer service after the fact. We returned the cake stand on the Monday following the wedding and asked to speak to someone about the cake. The young woman at the counter somewhat rudely informed us that the decorator that made our cake was not there that day, and suggested that I should call back another day. I did so, and the decorator was already gone for the day.
I called one final time and spoke to a decorator, but apparently not THE decorator that made our cakes. The woman took my information and informed me that the owner should call me back after the fourth of July holiday. This hasn't happened.
It's tough to write this review because of the many good cakes we've received over the years from Marguerite's, but to have paid so much money and see something so sloppy, and get such non-existent service after the fact (after we've paid them their money, of course) is unacceptable. They have lost an entire family of business, a family that generally purchased a cake for nearly every birthday gathering every year.
UPDATE: I have since spoken to Marguerite's. I left them a message on their Facebook wall along with a picture of the misspelling on the cake. They deleted my Facebook post, but did call me back. It was actually the owner, Ms. Marguerite, that called.
Their response? "We are sorry. We put our hearts into this cake. This was a $1500 cake that you only paid [this much] for. We used a contracted decorator because we were so busy. We worked on it for two weeks. Four people double-checked it and no one caught it." And that was that. No asking if they could do anything for us. No offer of anything. Just a rushed apology and a bunch of excuses. We won't be...
Read moreI don’t even know where to begin regarding our phenomenal experience with Marguerites Cakes, LLC. My fiancé and I were scheduled for a cake tasting at Marguerites and from the start Ms. Marguerite, herself, was very responsive to all of our inquiries. When it came time for the tasting, Ms Marguerite was the one who met with us. She said that she does this with all of her cake tastings because she wants to ensure that the cakes ordered are exactly what the customer wants and because her name/reputation is important to her. Talk about great customer service! Once the cake tasting was underway, Ms. Marguerite provided some background on her business as well as the ingredients used in all of her cakes - everything fresh, NEVER frozen. Ms Marguerite said “being a traditional Italian woman, I would never use anything artificial or frozen. I want my customers happy and good quality makes the customers happy.”
She explained the cake flavor options to us (e.g., traditional weeding, carrot cake, etc) and how they are made. After this she brought out a small cake version of each of the cakes! She said they were made fresh that morning so that we could taste exactly what our cake will taste like on our wedding day. I can’t even begin to describe how delicious each of these cakes were. They were, hands down, the best cakes I’ve ever had! So much that my fiancé and I had a hard time deciding what flavors we would like for our wedding cake. While we were tasting the cakes (which Ms. Marguerite personally served to us) you could tell that Ms. Marguerite took pleasure in seeing our reactions to each flavor. She takes pride in her baking and that was obvious!
After the tasting, she described the pricing to us, which was VERY reasonable. You can tell that she is in this for the love of the business and not to make a quick dollar off her patrons. She also provided bundle pricing if we decided to add a grooms cake, which also was VERY reasonable. In that instant, we decided to book with her. There was no reason to go anywhere else. Her love of her business, her stellar customer service, and reasonable pricing was enough. We knew we would not find that anywhere else.
On our way out, she provided us with the rest of our cakes that we had tasted and threw in a few additional bakery items. She thanked us for letting her be a part of our special day and gave us a hug.
There was something about Ms. Marguerite that you could not find anywhere else. Her genuine nature and desire to provide her customers with the absolute comes very naturally to her. She is very confident in her ability to provide the best and it shows in everything she does. She will be getting our business for all cakes moving forward (even though we live 45 minutes from...
Read moreMs. Marguerite was so sweet during our wedding cake tasting. Her demeanor is calm and honest. We’ve heard so many good reviews from everyone we’ve talked to and It has lived up to expectations. She was humble and reasonable with pricing!
We had the opportunity to taste 5 cakes (see pictures).
Reason we picked: They promise freshly made cakes. Non-frozen. They include delivery of the cake. We know flavors will be good, and we are looking for buttercream(not fondant -ew). As much as people want beautiful over the top cakes, sometimes flavors are compromised - we want a GOOD cake. This is it. (I’ll come back in a year and review cake decorations). Albeit, the mini cakes decorated already shows a lot of mindfulness and care, we do not doubt it will be exactly what we’re looking for. Very cutesy!
Almond Cake: One of the best genuine almond cakes Ive ever had. Usually, it’s a cake with simple syrup spray flavored with almond - and not very appealing. Per bakery, it’s made fresh. Very good selling point for us! (picked)
Carrot Cake: To be honest, I hate the carrot texture, and I barely felt it on this one. Excellent, I do think i need more cream cheesiness, but per bakery it’s due to customer feedback requesting less cheesiness. This is a hard one, I enjoyed the lightness as it made it into a lighter cake.
Italian -something-: it was delicious! Not our cuppa, but still very good. I think it’s out of flavor profile, but light not too sweet. Loved the nuts. Please dont knock it till you try it!
Red Velvet: WE THOROUGHLY enjoyed a genuine red velvet. Not your average. Now a days, red velvet is confused with chocolate cake with red food coloring. This was velvety, light chocolate and with a nice cream cheese buttercream (very similar to the carrot cake(?)). (Picked)
Chocolate Cake: So good. It’s a chocolate flavor that is a solid chocolate lover’s best friend. Being honest, I’m a chocolate chocolates lover, would add dark chocolate and make it really deep. This is like a lighter, yet delectable...
