I have been to Ginger Hill Tavern many times since I both am a student at Slippery Rock University and live locally. Each time that I have been there, there is a middle aged gentleman that bartenders (if you could call him that). He is most recognizable for wearing a backwards ball cap and appears to be in good shape. But anyways, each time that I have been there I have always tipped well (at least 20%) and this bartender has repeatedly said F* to and at me, cursing at people sitting at the bar each and every time someone orders a drink. The last experience I had there was recently during a 21st birthday party in which he said, and I quote "all of you need to buy your own F*ing drinks and quit buying for other people" (the birthday girl) also I was extremely overcharged for drinks and I basically had to yell at the top of my lungs to get his attention (because he was obviously ignoring me and several others) it eventually got to the point that several people there were asking others to buy them drinks because they felt unsafe and disrespected each time they ordered a drink. The worst part was, it was a Wednesday night and the 20 people attending the birthday party made up more than half the bar. This man without a doubt should be fired and never allowed to work behind a bar, or in a restaurant what so ever. without a doubt if I ever go back, I will not allow this man to serve me at all, and if he does I will NOT be tipping at all. On a side note this man carries himself as if he owns the place, which I pray to god that he doesn't because I know, without a doubt, if that man runs any establishment at all, it...
Read moreMy husband and I live in the area but we had never tried Ginger Hill. The good things about the restaurant; The waiter we had was very good. He was friendly, good at his job and took very good care of us. The food was very good. We had two friends with us and all of us were pleased with the food. The bad things; We got to the restaurant at about 5:30 p.m. the first thing we noticed was the very, very, dirty condition of the sidewalk all around the restaurant. We had noticed this before and is one of the reasons we had never gone in. Second, When we sat down the booth we sat at was really not clean. There was a layer of grease on both the booth table and seats. This is something that comes from not being cleaned properly over a long period of time. The paper place mats were also stuck to the table due to the grease. On the way out of the restaurant I touched several other booths and they had the same problem. The restrooms were also not clean. Because of the time of day we were there and the fact that The University is only on summer population these problems should have been non existent.
Cleaning and sweeping up the front of the restaurant and taking way more care in the inside cleaning would go along way to making this a really nice place.
We all also noticed with all the T.V.'s on and music playing over the other speakers it was difficult to hear each other when...
Read moreLocated in the heart of Slippery Rock and SRU, Ginger Hill Tavern was chosen as the restaurant to celebrate my Wife's birthday. Good food. Nice sized portions. Wide selection of foods on their menu to satisfy the whole family. Patio out front for those that enjoy dining outdoors. 3 things kept me from giving more stars. 1st, My Wife ordered 2 drinks. Neither of them were available. 1 was a slushie and it wasn't frozen yet. The other was a Pomegranate Martini which our waiter, Jeff, told us should've been taken off the menu because it's not made anymore. 2nd, the booths are VERY uncomfortable. After 10 minutes I found myself adjusting to ease the back and butt pain. 3rd and last, both restrooms were in less than clean conditions. Dirty, holes in the walls, broken handles on the sinks, BIG roll of toilet paper not in the dispenser but balanced on top of it. I compared notes with my Wife and Daughter and theirs was much the same with the addition of messages scratched into the stall doors by who I would guess to be college patrons. It must be tough to keep up with repairs and maintenance but it is necessary otherwise the message, "go ahead, treat this restroom like $hit" is given and patrons will continue to trash it like they do. None of these were a deal breaker BUT the overall experience could've been better with these...
