Went for dinner last night to celebrate my best friend’s birthday. It was a weeknight so not too crowded and easy to get a table. Pablo was our server and he was attentive and friendly. The spinach and artichoke dip special veggie pizza caught our eye as we are huge spinach and artichoke dip fans. Pablo instantly recommended it and said it was one of his favorites so that sold it for us. I am not joking when I say this was the best pizza I’ve ever had. The smoked Gouda cheese was so creamy and delicious. I was a bit skeptical about the red onions when first reading the description, but they weren’t overpowering and worked with the other ingredients nicely. Eager to have this pizza again, we asked Pablo how long the specials lasted and he broke our hearts when he told us they are just weekly and that the next day was the final day (specialty pizzas switch over every Friday)! So of course I had to order another pizza to take home with me because I just couldn’t wait until the day that they decided to make it again. We ended the night with a perfect root beer float (very rich vanilla icecream). We are crossing our fingers that the spinach and artichoke dip pizza becomes a regular on the menu!

An added (and very welcomed bonus) was that we got to sit right next to the pizza fire. It kept us warm and cozy and really set the atmosphere for the evening (and you get to watch the pizza making magic happen)!

Overall great service and...

Fantastic place to go with friends. Bowling is a blast and pairs well with the delicious and creative flatbreads.

In addition to the food and fun, I want to call out exceptional attention and care I received during an incident last week. I had an unfortunate accident on the lanes and slipped while doing a double-take on a wobbly pin that got me a strike. I ended up cutting my hand - a messy scene with lots of blood.

Immediately the staff was there to help - in particular the bowling attendant was amazing. After I gained enough of my senses to get to the bathroom, he was there in seconds with first-aid supplies. He talked me through my shock and helped wash and bandage the cut. The rest of the staff was supportive and checked in on me regularly until my ride got there. Luckily, the cut was far more dramatic than damaging and it has been healing nicely, likely with the help of the prompt application of saline and bandages.

I have since emailed with the management to commend them on their employees and have gotten personal, warm responses. This is a business that cares about their customers and shows it at every level.

From the baseline quality of the establishment and the product they deliver, to the exceptional service of a few employees during a crisis, Flatbread Company Somerville always impresses. Even before the accident, I would have given 5 stars. If I could give more...

Update April 2022: Flatbread, like many other local gems, has suffered significantly over the last 2 years. My last few visits included uncharacteristically disappointing service at the bar and inconsistency with food preparation, both of which could be due to onboarding a large volume of new staff. Additionally, the bar area, which once offered cozy greenery and whiskey-barrel bottle displays, has been modernized and now includes TVs, which will likely help with patronage on game-days. While this is not my personal preference, I certainly can understand the decision in very competitive dining market.

I originally removed 2 stars: 1 for staff attentiveness, and 1 for atmosphere. However, after being contacted by a representative to discuss their situation and my feedback I've returned 1, and will happily return the other after a positive experience. It's clear Flatbread still values their customers, whom they need now as much as ever.

Original Review: One of our favorite spots to go. They have great salads, absolutely amazing pizzas, and even better service. Their beer selection is fresh and on-point, and their cocktails are great. Best part for many: a vegan pizza, as well as the recent addition of daiya mozzarella as a substitute in their other classic. Plus bowling next door, which gets busy early, so call and make your bowling reservations...

Ok so, this place has incredible pizza. Other reviews have said as much. And the chocolate chip banana bread dessert is warmed in the pizza oven and ginormous. All amazing. But this review is about salad. Wait, you went to a pizza place and ordered salad? Yes, and you should too. First of all, their salad is fresh and the veggies are grown on-site when possible. Their dressing is flavorful but acts mostly as a flavor-booster for the lettuce, the celery, the seaweed, and the carrots. Secondly, you can add pulled pork (or chicken or whatever they put on their Carne pizza special that day) to make it a meal. Third, goat cheese. I don't think I have to explain this one. My partner and I came here for a Thanksgiving-gloat detox and yes of course we also split a small Herb and Cheese but the salad was the star here. Trust me.

We were a little taken back, did not realize it was part of a bowling alley but it worked really well. Was also excited to see an actually wood fire oven! We had the Punctuated Equilibrium pizza. The ingredients were great! You can taste the quality. Was not impressed with the crust. It was not crispy at all, the slice easily bent when picked up. Gluten free is tricky to do right. Just need more practice I suppose. I watched the other pizzas come out and their ingredients went all the way to the end, ours did not. The staff was attentative.

It's not the greatest for conversation, at least by the bowling, but for some reason the cacaphony didn't get to any of us prone to sensory overload. Possibly because the clonking is more wood-on-wood than metal or plastic. There are picnic tables outside with umbrellas but on a hundred-degree day I preferred the cool inside. I had the Punctuated Equilibrium Pizza and a Castle Island White beer and couldn't have been happier. The service was prompt and friendly. Would happily go again.
