Went here last night to check it out as I was intrigued by the Detroit style pizza and I am kind of torn on this place. This is a case where the service definitely could have made all the difference in our experience here and unfortunately it fell short. Food and drinks were good, the pizza was yummy (although as my husband pointed out, it’s similar to a fancier version of the good old frozen French bread pizza, ha! But I guess that what Detroit style is). But the service was just, well, meh. The three of us wanted to get a pizza as more of an appetizer for us to share before our meals and we asked the waitress if we should get a small or large. She recommended the large, so we went with it, but once it arrived it was pretty clear she was just trying to upsell us as it was WAY more than an app size. My husband got the burger and enjoyed it. The highlight of the night was the cauliflower fajitas that I ended up sharing with my sister (since I didn’t like the salt cod nuggets but that order was more my fault, I confused regular cod with salt cod). If you like different spices and veggies and are looking for something really different to try, these are a winner!! As I said before, unfortunately the service was underwhelming. Our waitress was not very friendly, and I get that it was busy and they are probably still working out the kinks but they had quite a few servers working yet service was soooo slow. Despite the slow service, honestly just some friendliness from our waitress would have made up for it, but she just seemed like she couldn’t be bothered. I don’t know if I’ll go back or not. It might end up one of those places that is better to sit at the bar and have a couple drinks and an appetizer than to...
Read moreI've never written a review before, but I had to just for this place. My fiance and I are both in the culinary world (he's a chef, I'm a pastry chef with savory experience as well), and it's hard to impress our palates. My eyes were rolling in the back of my head! I'm not religious, but I think I saw a god. It made me so happy to see vegetarian/vegan options that weren't just salad or an impossible burger. You've gotta try the cauliflower lettuce cups, whether you're vegetarian or not. It was like a fireworks display in my mouth -- the flavor was so powerful and delicious. I ate those like I hadn't seen food in weeks. I think my fiance was impressed at how messy I got on date night without a care. The cauliflower steak -- breading was amazing, the rabe was so garlicky. The eggplant fries were insane as well.
Drinks were strong and delicious, and their straws were actual straw, I believe. My hippy heart loved that. All in all, if I could rate this place 10/5 stars, I would. I just about told everyone to go here. I'm about to unblock some people on Facebook to spread...
Read moreI didn't realize"Detroit-style" pizza was a thing before reading about this place but it piqued my curiosity and I decided to try it with the family. Well air conditioned inside, with a small outdoor seating space as well.
The menu had a variety of different types of options, but the pizza was what I had come here specifically to try. Had the small meatball and small barbacoa pizzas, and they were both delicious. Portion size was appropriate for a small, and we actually took leftovers home. Nice selections of draft beer, bottles, wine and cocktails available.
The kids menu (including juice boxes!) was surprisingly extensive and the a la carte offerings were perfect to mix and match for our finicky toddler. Highchairs and crayons and coloring placemats are available.
TL;DR: I would recommend Avenue Kitchen & Bar to friends and I will return to...
