We were looking for a new place to eat, and this place popped up in my search on Google. After looking through countless pics and reviews, my coworker and I decided to give it a go. Arriving at the place, we found it quite challenging to find a parking spot, but we took this as a good sign. This place had to be good if a tow truck driver parked in the median of the main street with a load hooked up. As soon as we entered the building, we were greeted with a warm welcome and asked to sit in a certain section, and we obliged. Shortly after, a waitress came to our table, handed us menus, and took our drink orders. As I looked through the menu, I noticed that City Cafe offered a wide variety of choices. I ended up ordering the Rueben Sandwich while my coworker ordered the porkchop special. My order came out first and looked pretty good. The side of fries were fresh and hot. You can tell they were homemade and not frozen. You could see the seasoning peppered evenly throughout the side dish. There was a distinct crunch as i bit through a single fry, followed by a soft, fully cooked, pillowy inside. This is the exact thing everyone looks for in a fry. The skin to inside ratio was perfect. This is where things got a little weird, as my coworker had not received his food yet. Do I continue to enjoy my food while it was hot, or do I let it sit and wait till we both have our food to eat. I ended up waiting in an effort to not be rude. Eventially, his food showed up, and it was time to further experience my order. The sandwich was made with toasted white bread. The deli meat in my sandwich was plentiful, and the veggies were fresh. As I took a bite, I drowned in all the flavor. This sandwich tasted immaculate. However, it did have separation anxiety with the roof of my mouth. It seems that the sandwich was toasted after it was constructed, resulting in half crispy, half soggy bread. Though this was mildly annoying, the flavors of the sandwich kept me coming back for more. Overall, I think my experience at City Cafe was pretty positive. I will come back and try some other dishes...
Read moreIt was just after noon and I wanted to go brunch after my friend picked me up from my flight at Hobby Airport. Based on the ratings, this place was good and it was close by.
So disappointing...I was starving and this was my first meal in Texas. I'm unsure why the ratings are higher on Yelp than on Google, but it wasn't anything special. It was a diner type spot if that's what you're looking for.
I ordered the Chicken Coup with one scrambled egg (with cheese), 1/2 country fries and 1/2 grits (for $1 more), a biscuit, with no meat.
I received one scrambled egg (with cheese), HASHBROWNS and 1/2 grits (for $1 more), a biscuit, with BACON. I pointed out my incorrect order when the server brought it to the table and she started to take the plate away to fix it.
As I mention above, I was starving and this was my first meal of the day, so I told her I would just take the bacon (because I wanted to start eating). She indicated that was fine, but they would have to charge me for it and went to the register to add it to the bill (and still took the plate away). She left the tiny 1/2 serving of grits for me to "get started on." The sad part is, the bacon wasn't even cooked the way I liked it. It appeared crispy, when I originally saw it (before she turned back around and took the plate away to switch out the hashbrowns). I didn't even eat them.
Soooo...1) If I hadn't pointed out THEIR mistake, I WOULDN'T have been charged??? 2) What was she going to do with the bacon that she already put on a customer's plate, brought out of the kitchen, and brought to the table...give it to ANOTHER customer? 3)What did she plan to do with the hashbrowns? 4) Don't restaurants normally give a discount when they mess a customers order up, not charge MORE $. 🤣
To top it off, the floor was dirty and I needed to use the restroom, but my friend said it was nasty. I...
Read moreUpdated for June, 2022, I was fortunate to be working in this area and was glad I could take lunch off here. Today’s choice: Their lunch special of catfish with two sides, the veggie mix and the mashed potatoes and gravy with a dinner roll and one piece of cornbread. The taste and price can’t be beat, by their breaded peppery catfish lunch special with iced tea at $13.26. Add in a tip. The table service is still fast here, during a packed lunch room. My favorite cafe in South Houston. It's good if you can keep it simple and healthy living on a Saturday. Although they have many choices including their Buffet and menu items I normally stop by for the faster and simpler breakfast menu which does continue throughout their serving times. Today was the easy, much healthier choice of a Veggie Omelette. It's affordable too at $7.75. And if you like it with the many sides, which aren't so healthy, the choices are almost endless. It's convenient, better tasting, many more menu choices and the prices are better than the Egg & I, all the way over in Webster. And a lot less crowded too with much faster table service. The parking is much better than The Egg & I’s parking but the parking spaces do fill up fast on the...
