Off the Hook has been a favorite of my wife and her family for years, but this was my first visit. I must say, I was impressed! The venue itself is on the smaller side with the option to sit indoors or outdoors. We sat outside. The patio sits adjacent to the main road, so there isn't much of a view, but it was still nice and very much had the Tahoe feel. The inside was nicely decorated and had both normal and dar height tables. Dimly lit and medium noise with all of the chatter. The menu was a nice size with various offerings and a happy hour. Standard rolls, bowls, and apps sat aside more modern offerings and gluten free choices, ingredients like macadamia nuts, basil, cilantro, and fresh grated wasabi added a twist. Something for everyone. We ordered the Dragon balls(spicy, fried, ground shrimp, tuna and crab dumplings) to start and several rolls from the happy hour menu as well as a cold sake. The sake was great and refreshing and when I asked the waitress for more info, she was happy to tell me about the style and manufacturer. The food came out in a timely fashion and we were in love. Everything tasted great and was very fresh. I would travel all the way back just for another piece of the Yeti roll. You must try it. The dragon balls should be served everywhere. Each roll was flavorful and had a different identity from the last. Once all was said and done, we were stuffed and it was easy on the wallet. I highly...
Read moreThere was a bit of a wait (30 minutes) for a table for 7 of us - we didn't mind terribly waiting, but it would have been nicer if the Yelp waitlist function had worked properly. But we finally were seated at a table outside. We'd already looked at the menu and had a good idea of what we wanted to order.
Everyone was very pleased with what they ordered. I was happy that there were a couple of veggie rolls that had tofu in them, and one that was vegan without the sauce and was probably one of the best "sushi" rolls I've ever eaten in my life. It was called the Earthworm (contains organic baked tofu, basil, garlic, cucumber & broccoli topped with avocado, macadamia nuts and dynamite sauce) and the combination of the basil and garlic was AMAZING. The Bhodi (organic baked tofu, spinach, garlic and shiitake mushroom) was also very good.
Service was excellent and very helpful. They took our order efficiently but we didn't feel rushed, and it wasn't a terribly long wait to get the food. Everything looked gorgeous and the consensus seemed to be that everything was delicious.
They were unfortunately out of the lava cake that several people in our group wanted to split, but they got to split the tempura cheesecake, and they really enjoyed that as well.
We will likely come back next year when we're back for our...
Read moreNEW REVIEW: We have been to Off the Hook several times over the past several years. In fact, after my initial review (posted at the bottom), we did indeed try again and have been pleased each time. That's what keeps us going back. I don't remember which of the rolls I had, except that it was delicious! We always sit at the sushi counter so we can ask questions. It's Affordable, Delicious, and Friendly! Try OFF the HOOK first.

Old review: Our waitress, Gabe (gal), was wonderful. I'd easily give her four stars . However, some of the food was good, and other was great, so I have a mixed review. My husband decided he wanted to try a sushi roll and he only ate 1/2, which never happens! But it wasn't very flavorful at all. The Gyozi potstickers were delicious, as were the ribs, and the walnut shrimp was fair. We sat outside and even with the main road right there, it was still pleasurable at 7pm on a Wednesday evening. We heard the traffic noise but it didn't overwhelm our conversation. All the staff were great. So, again, a mixed review. I'd try it again just to compare. And I'd stick to the sushi bar to see how they...
