Since our favorite Mexican restaurant closed due to the pandemic, my husband and I have been searching for a local place with all of our traditional favorites. Someone recommended Angelina's in Southgate, so we figured we would give it a try. What a waste of both our time and money! We went on a Friday, 1/21/22 at 5 PM, which I guess would be considered the start of the dinner hour. We were seated immediately, given plenty of chips and salsa, and our server, Saroc, was very friendly and attentive, which was the highlight of the evening for us. Everything quickly went downhill from there.
My husband ordered the California burrito dinner and a Bud Light, and I ordered the crispy beef taco dinner. No more than three minutes after we ordered, the food was on the table, which indicated to me something was about to go very badly. My husband's burrito was wrapped in aluminum foil and was absolutely cold: not tepid, not even slightly warm, but cold, as were the rice and beans. We figured the burrito had been pre-made and wrapped and stored somewhere waiting to be served. My tacos were warm, only because the cook had to put the filling into the corn shell and give them a quick fry, but my rice and beans were also cold.
My tacos had NO spice or flavor to them, other than cooked ground beef, and were very bland. The rice and beans were just as bland. My husband indicated his burrito was just as flavorless, and he had a difficult time cutting it because the tortilla was cold and he had been given a dull knife.
I have a suggestion for the owners - please change your recipes to include a little Southwest seasoning for crying out loud. Either the recipes are faulty, or the cooks are lazy, I'm not sure which, but the food was awful. One positive thing that I CAN mention - the beer was cold, so everything on our table was cold. We won't be back and we will tell our friends...
Read moreI had dinner here tonight and it was so much better than all of the other downriver Mexican restaurants, and is MUCH better than downtown Detroit. The restaurant is extremely clean and open, with a nice atmosphere. In addition, the wait staff is on point. Our server Bobbi was an excellent waitress and waited on us to perfection. She was on top of service with things like providing a box to go, providing extra napkins/refills, and even offering us a drink to go without asking.
Now, onto the food. My aunt and I tend to get Mexican food pretty often and have had almost all of the Mexican restaurants from Manuel's to Mexican Gardens and even to Los Galanes and Xochimilco, and we both agree the food here was the best. The salsa is actually salsa instead of some paste. The chips and deep fried items (my aunt got the Chimichanga dinner) were extremely tasty and not greasy at all. I had the Mexican Sandwich and it was phenomenal, with extremely generous portions.
Now I've had Angelina's in Allen Park and have been going there for years, but this location I feel delivered the better food and most bang for your buck. It has the best part of Angelina's, but also has improved it by quite a bit with fresh silverware and plates, much bigger location, and a fantastic wait staff. If you haven't checked this place out, what are you...
Read moreI recently visited this Mexican restaurant, and it was a truly disappointing experience. Located in a rundown part of town, the first impression was far from welcoming. The decor felt cheap and outdated, and the overall cleanliness left much to be desired.
As for the food, it lacked any sense of authenticity. The flavors were bland, and the dishes seemed like they were mass-produced rather than made with care. Tacos were dry and uninspired, I won’t even bother rating the Velveeta cheese tasting queso and the salsa tasted more like a store-bought condiment than a fresh accompaniment.
Service was good, the waitress was very sweet. I will say that she had a good personality. It's unfortunate but this place missed the mark on almost every front. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for genuine Mexican cuisine or a pleasant dining experience. Save your time and money and seek out a place that truly embraces the rich flavors and...
