SERIOUSLY! For the past couple of years my Boss has taken his Manager's and spouses to Kirby's for a Christmas "Manager" Appreciation dinner. He gets the wine room (it's usually around 20 of us) so that we can talk and enjoy our meal. I have a couple of friends (we are in our late 50's, divorced/widowed) we love to go somewhere nice for our Christmas dinner, after this year's Manager dinner in November, I decided to ask them if they wanted to go to Kirby's. We made online reservations for December 14th at 6pm. I had been telling them all about the Surf and Turf as well as the Lobster Mac N Cheese that I get at our Manager's dinner. That being said, I ordered the Surf and Turf with a 7oz filet (got the Lobster Mac N Cheese too), the Lobster said "Market Value" and I assumed (my fault) that the price would include the steak. WRONG! Anyway, when our checks arrived, my bill was $161.29 (before I tacked on the tip) the Lobster was $74 and the Steak was $39, I also had two beers plus the Mac N Cheese. I almost had a heart attack; I don't spend that much on groceries for a week. I was shocked, embarrassed, just dumbfounded, and my girlfriends couldn't believe it either (their bills were in the $60 range). I was speechless, which is not me.
After stewing on this the whole evening, I called Sunday and asked if the Surf and Turf was one price or individual prices, as it didn't say Steak and add on Lobster, they didn't know and placed me on hold. I spoke with someone (possibly the Manager) and he said they were individual prices. He said there were two size lobsters (WHAT?, first I heard of this) the smaller being $30 and the other being $70 (I was charged $74). I said, thanks and hung up. Again dumbfounded.
Monday rolls around, I still am having a hard time with all of this especially since I was never told there were two different priced lobsters, it was not an option given to me. The $40 difference would have made a HUGE difference in my bill. So, I called back, this time I specifically asked to speak to a Manager. I spoke with Teddy, explained the whole situation, yes, it was my fault BUT I felt that the waiter was also at fault, as he should have told me that there were two size lobsters and the price difference. Teddy said he sympathized with me and would speak to the GM the next day. He got my contact info and wished me a Merry Christmas. I haven't heard from anyone.
So, PLEASE ASK questions before ordering, do NOT assume that the waiter is going to tell you that there is more than one option to choose from. I think I am going to suggest a different place for next year's...
Read moreWe thought we'd try Kirbys for our 24th anniversary. We've been used to going to Capitol Grill but I saw that they had a jazz band scheduled to play that night. I thought it would be really nice to hear jazz music in the background while we enjoyed drinks and dinner. Our server Keith was a great guy and took care of our needs. My wife and I each got a complimentary glass of champagne to kick things off. We then ordered drinks and an appetizer of crab claws. What didn't make sense to me is that the appetizer came with five pieces. Shouldn't there be an even number in the likely event that it is shared? Also each piece was incredibly small. For $25, I thought it was too expensive. We then ordered surf and turf, which is steak and lobster for our entree and ordered scalloped potatoes and mushrooms for the sides. I didn't even notice until we got the final bill but each of our entrees were about $110 each. Dang, that hurt! Anyway, the ribeye steak was well prepared and delicious. The sides were equally good. My biggest complaint is about the lobster. Have you ever been to a cheap chinese buffet that advertised crab claws then when you went to eat one, they had boiled or steamed out all the flavor to prepare their lobster sauce and had absolutely no flavor? Well this is how I felt about our lobster. It looked really good but all the flavor was absent. All the flavor Must have went into someone else’s sauce. I was so looking forward to the unique lobster taste that I love so much. And the now about the music. They were scheduled to start at 7pm in the bar and we fully expected to hear a little jazz while we dined. We were even planning to extend our visit into the bar after dinner. Wouldn't you know it, the music never happened while we there. I kept asking our server but he just kept saying that it’s going to start any minute. By 8:30 we got tired of waiting and left. If we only had steaks and never expected music, I'd have raving reviews but I can't. If they are going to charge as much as they do, the lobster had better have a full lobster taste; the kind that you roll your eyes back in complete satisfaction. And if they schedule music, it had better start exactly on time. If they are a no-show, then have some digital music ready to go. With other dining options widely available, Kirby's is not on my...
Read moreWent here with my family to celebrate an early Christmas and my parents anniversary. Usually we absolutely love the experience we have, as it's always intimate and they do really well making it feel like a special occasion. For the first time we did not have this kind of experience. It was very packed, understandably with it being a Saturday night, but it seemed our server had too many tables in her section to truly give anyone the intimate experience you're used to when going to Kirby's. She had at least a 5-6 table section and you could tell she was spread thin. There were a bit of things throughout the dinner that took awhile to get, or our server forgot to get us and we had to ask for again. Our server also seemed to have forgotten to ring in our desserts, as about 15-20 minutes after putting the order in with her she came back to our table and told us the computer seemed to have made those desserts dissappear, so she re-rang them in and they were putting a rush on them. She comped 2 of the 3 desserts, as 2 of them were for my parents and she said she did that for their anniversary. That's the only time she really seemed to bring that up to them and try to make the occasion "special" for them. She left the 3rd dessert on the ticket, which was surprising with how long we were having to wait on those in total (about 30 minutes). Our actual dinner was fantastic, however, 2 of the 3 desserts we got were something just added to the menu today and they were pretty hard to eat (literally). They compared it to a truffle, which I would say was pretty accurate, but it was a bit of a struggle to try to get bites of it with a spoon. Overall, not a good experience, and my parents did not feel like they were celebrating a special event because of it. We're really sad about it, because again, usually our experiences here are wonderful and that's what usually would bring us back! Not sure if they will be coming back to celebrate anymore because of tonight. Yes, the meal was wonderful, but you go here for the meal AND the experience, and tonight was a subpar experience to...
