TL:DR - Average food, a little pricey, but it's Sparta.
Cute place with a small, tastefully decorated dining area. Folks working there are friendly and happy to help. Placed an order online, but couldn't pre-pay as it wasn't an option? Kind of strange. Prices are high, but again, it's Sparta.
Overall, the food was rather average in flavor, and a little bit undersized for the price. They did not offer chopsticks, but they did include forks, spoons, and packets of soy sauce. There were no fortune cookies. We asked ahead of time "No Broccoli Please" because we can't eat it.
The Nake Yaki Soba came in three pieces: a container of broth, a container of noodles mixed with ingredients, and a little tin with two tempura shrimp inside. The broth looked and smelled wonderful, but upon tasting it, was rather bland. We enjoyed the shrimp separately. The container of noodles / ingredients was packed in tight - the chicken, fish cake, crab stick, and egg were great. The noodles were just the right consistency and easy to slide into the broth. However, the "vegetables" in the mix were predominantly raw onions and raw bell peppers. The cooked vegetables included scallions, bok choy, one baby corn, and ... broccoli. All of it just tasted like raw bell peppers, which was really disappointing. Even when everything was put together in the broth, it was very underwhelming.
The Vegetable Tempura appetizer was about what we expected - tempura vegetables. There were two pieces each of zucchini and sweet potato. There was one piece of what we think was taro? And one piece ... of broccoli. Again. We specifically asked for no broccoli, so all of those went into the trash - what a waste.
If we go back, we'll probably stick to ordering sushi, as it's in their name. It could be they're not very concerned about...
Read moreI have been going here for a few years now. I have never been disappointed. Owners are lovely people and the food is always delicious and fresh. My husband and I love that it is BYOB and we often make a date night out of it. I love the Naruto roll, all of the sashimi, the Out of Control Roll and the yellowtail with jalapeno's (I don't recall the name). I highly recommend this place. I am very cautious and picky when it comes to Sushi due to its potential to make you very sick if not handled and prepared correctly. But I have never had a single concern with repeatedly eating here. Give it a try! On another note - Its sad to see how mean people are here in their reviews. I wonder if they even had the decency to contact the restaurant or say something while they were there so their issues could be corrected. Things happen sometimes and that is just the nature of life. If you have a problem or if something didn't meet your standards say something! Don't potentially ruin the reputation of a family owned local restaurant that works very hard by your thoughtless reviews. This is a real business with real people who support their families by...
Read moreI'm a bit of a sushi snob coming from NYC where there are many excellent authentic Japanese cuisine establishments. I often get turned off when I go to Japanese restaurants, and I hear Chinese being spoken from the staff. There was even a sushi restaurant in Ridgewood, NJ, that went as far as to play Chinese music. I thought "what desecration"! Then, when the food isn't well prepared and not representative of the Japanese, it's such a disservice and embarrassment to both cultures. Well, Sushi Ya is run by Chinese staff. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the sashimi. It was fresh, tasty, and melted in my mouth. The presentation is decent. It would have been better if the wasabi was freshly grated and not the prepackaged concentrated kind. The accompanying salad and miso soup were simple and basic. I haven't tried the sushi with the rice nor the cooked foods. Either way, I applaud them for doing justice to the cuisine, at least with the freshness. Yes, I would definitely come back if I'm in...
