Cali Burrito-try harder
The man at the counter was very nice. I asked him a question- something that I've been very curious about. I had previously ordered Nachos here- well over a year ago after some people suggested we try this place out- the cheese came out not melted. I had never had nachos before with unmelted cheese. So, I kindly asked the guy why they don't melt the cheese. He looked at me like I was nuts, like "who the heck melts cheese on nachos?" He then (very nicely I must add) explained to me they don't have anything to melt the cheese with so they leave it raw...I was so surprised to hear they had no broiler- oven or anything to melt. They operate with only a fryer and flat top. I understood then- and decided to never order nachos here, but try something else.
So here I am after a year, maybe more, giving them a second chance because my first left my taste buds in not such a good place. I ordered "rolled tacos" I know them as taquitos. They came out with diced tomatoes and lettuce on the side, which I found interesting, and unnecessary. The guacamole was thin and tasted old, like it came from a tub of prepackaged guac- not so crazy about that flavor, so I scraped it all off. The "chips salsa" from the salsa bar was ok and gave the rolled tacos some flavor- but they were still pretty plain.
I sat there looking around. The place was pretty busy (lunch shift on a Thursday) and I sat there puzzled... I wasn't sure I wanted to come back, but clearly people are liking it... Perhaps I am ordering the wrong things.
They have branded themselves as California Mexican, yet it is nothing at all like the California Mexican I know. I grew up in southern California- eating Mexican food almost daily... Closet thing I've found here locally so far is Tito's. Even if it's not California Mexican, that's fine- but good is good, and this was only ok to me.
I have worked in hospitality for over 20 years, and my husband is a chef... Perhaps I am a bit critical when I eat. But when a lunch order takes almost 20 minutes and comes out plain and tasting like it was pulled from a tub that's been sitting for a couple of days longer than it should- well at this point in my life, I take it as an affront to my taste buds and mildly disrespectful. Do QC on your product before service to make sure things taste like they should.
If you think I should go back, and have some suggestions on what I should try, please drop them in...
Read moreIf you have food allergies, don’t go here!! We called in and placed a fairly simple takeout order (1 burrito with no cheese and no sour cream, and 2 shrimp tacos). My husband has a severe dairy allergy but the girl on the phone repeated the order back to me perfectly, so I wasn’t concerned. When my husband picked up the order, he confirmed with the restaurant that there was no cheese and no sour cream in the burrito and also saw it was listed on the receipt correctly. He got home and started eating it only to discover after a few bites that there was in fact both cheese and sour cream inside. He called and asked them to remake the burrito. After driving back to the restaurant again with the messed up burrito in hand to return, he asked if he could have it refunded because he was forced to come back and also because he will likely be throwing up later tonight after eating some of it. The girl at the counter said they “don’t do refunds” according to the owner, and that he was already getting a free burrito. Not sure how that makes any sense since we were actually only getting food we ordered, not anything free…but my husband asked to speak to a manager and she said there wasn’t one there. Terrible customer care and really disappointed in the lack of concern for what their mistake means for people with...
Read moreI really wish I could give them a great review but the rudeness from the girl working behind the counter tonight was so awful we won’t ever be back. I ordered a burrito (without pico) & then changed my order instead to a taco (without pico). She didn’t change it & I ended up with the burrito which would have been understandable since I did change my order but the burrito had pico! When I brought it to the girls attention I said all I really want is a taco to be made how I ordered it but she became extremely rude. She told me it was my mistake & my problem. The disrespect was unbelievable. I asked her to at least throw the burrito away for me since I wasn’t going to eat it & she said no you can do it yourself the trash can it right behind me (literally a foot behind her) so I had to walk BEHIND the counter to throw it away. If there hadn’t been people in line behind me I would have just left it. Shame on Cali Burrito for hiring such rude employees. We won’t be back or to any of their other...
