So I finally tried Martins! We had a large group coming over and we purchased 2lbs of Pork, 1 whole Chicken, 1 Full Rack of Ribs, 18 Wings and 3 sides (Broccoli Salad, Baked Beans, and Cole Slaw). I love chicken wings, but when I saw the price... I almost didn't buy them. They were by far the most expensive wings I've ever purchased. I do have to give credit where credit is due as they were also by far far far the best wings I've ever eaten! At almost $2 per wing they better be great and this will be a specialty treat item. I really wanted to try the Whole Hog BBQ and thought this was Fri/Sat/Sun... but it's only Fri/Sat. BBQ and how people like it vary a lot (just look at the reviews). For me, the smoke was a little much on the shoulder and ribs. My sister fell in love with both, just be aware when they say smoked they mean a lot of smoke! The chicken (wings and whole) cook faster and therefore absorb less smoke, but still plenty for my taste. The chicken was by far my favorite. I'm guessing the Whole Hog probably doesn't absorb as much of the smoke and would be better for my taste. The sides were great, but again... they are very proud of them. The 1 quart sides are $15. This is simply too much for coleslaw and baked beans. The taste was on point and great, but also be aware if you are diabetic like me... everything has sugar in it!
If you would like to try some really good bbq, but don't want to spend a fortune... I'd recommend getting the pulled pork ($16.49 per pound) and whole chicken ($18) for take-out. You can then fix your own sides and enjoy great bbq at a reasonable price.
I'll definitely go back (on Friday or Saturday) to give the whole hog a try!
One last thing... they did wrap and package everything well. Our food did not dry out even though I drove 30 minutes home and had to wait another 30-35 minutes for all our guests to arrive. I did take two coolers with me, a large cooler for the meat and smaller one for the cold sides. All the meat was placed in the large cooler which trapped the moisture and kept everything warm. The broccoli salad and coleslaw went in the smaller cooler to...

The Wings were cooked to perfection, with a crispy exterior that gave way to succulent and flavorful meat. The barbecue sauce coating the wings was a work of art, striking the ideal balance between tangy and sweet. It provided a delightful zing that elevated the overall taste. Read moreThe food was OK, not great. The meat was moist, for the full hog and the chicken, but it wasn't yummy. I didn't care for the Alabama white sauce, but perhaps that's my fault for ordering it in TN. All I could taste was a powerful celery seed or celery salt flavor I couldn't identify. I got take out, so I didn't try the others. Also, parts of my hog were pulled so thoroughly, it looked like they had already been chewed. The chicken was soaked with a salty spice rub and smoked to oblivion. The flavor was overwhelming.
Now, about the sides. The broccoli salad was OK, but the mayo was watery. The receipt said you get 4 oz , but it didn't fill up the half-pint cup. The four small hush puppies were decent, but the flavor was lacking.
My main gripe about the stingy sides is that they give you way too much meat. I would vastly prefer 30 to 40% less meat and fair helpings on the sides. I have so much meat left, I'm going to have to make corn or baked potatoes or put it on a bun.
Finally, for $15 per person, without drinks, I'm not going back. The food is overrated, especially for the premium price. There are plenty of better options. This is not in the echelon that people claim.
Other Points
Building was poorly marked. It was hard to find the entrance, which faces Main St. Employees taking out the trash got a little fresh when I asked how to get in.
The lines for ordering were chaotic. I would expect a lot of standing, which wouldn't be good for older relatives.
There's a smoke pit attached to the building near the front. Certainly, they work hard sourcing hard wood and buying good ingredients, but the finished product...
