Be ignored at the window for 10 minutes, pay 18 dollars for two coffees, wait upwards of 20 minutes, tour inside where it’s crowded and loud, finally get your coffee and ask which mocha has the oat milk, they didn’t mark it and don’t know, and they look exactly the same.
There was a time they’d ask if you wanted extra shots in the form of hotshots or “toddies”, now they don’t ask, and I watched as an iced drink I paid 8 dollars for get their pre-made who-knows-what concentrate instead of their actual, freshly ground, freshly pulled, vastly expensive on the shelf espresso. Onyx’s chai option also used to be good, with a good amount of spice. Since their grand opening I’ve yet to experience the same standard, yet I pay the same price.
There are plenty of reviews that would call the atmosphere relaxed. They all must’ve visited a neighboring bar before ordering; it is typically crowded and so loud you can hardly hear people across from you. How anyone in the upstairs “quiet area” gets any work done I’ll never know. Here is why it’s so crowded: because it’s a hangout spot. These people don’t care to wait the 20 minutes or 25+ if you want something other than coffee because they’re going to hang around for upwards of 2 hours anyway.
Never forget the other review who noticed all transactions also get a 4% extra charge for “employee benefits”. Huh? At 8 dollars per coffee and with an interior as grand and ostentatious as it is, they also want us to pay for their employee’s benefits? Is that before or after I also pay 10 dollars for their signature chocolate that’s 10 cm by 10 cm, single sheet? Or 17 dollars for “avocado on toast”?
Let’s face it. People go here for the looks of it. And they must really like the look of it, based on how long everyone is spending in line or waiting for about 5 baristas to pull...
Read moreThis place is a secret spot honestly and I didn’t even know what this place was and was amazed how unique and beautiful it was . Gave me cash but they don’t have change, had to pay 9$ for a coffee that would have costed $6.50 and they gave me a size that looks like it was the regular size when I ordered for a large. Before I had to pay 6.50 I didn’t even know there’s tax I also had to pay even more for an already expensive priced coffee. The study bars nice and the lobby hangouts are amazing especially in the morning. Prices are terrible though but everything else is super nice and the coffee was great tbh, service was nice and he sadly didn’t have any change to give back. They do free hot water so if you just wanna bring your own coffee and study they’ll let you.
Edit: I gave this a five star after some thought realising that these are lowkey the same prices you would see at a Starbucks. Onyx is so much more fancier and more clean with a study bar on top and beautiful look and vibe with even incredible outside seatings. The fact it goes downstairs also just show that this place isn’t a cheap place. So I guess you would expect a higher price than Starbucks...
Read moreThis cafe is one of the coolest coffee shops I’ve ever visited in any of the big cities I’ve been to. Impeccable design and very warm and welcome atmosphere.
The cafe is divided in zones, which seem to cater to different moods. The ground floor has three different sections, good for bigger parties and smaller ones depending on where you are. Very quiet upstairs working/reading nooks facing the walls. There’s also great patio seating if your kids are running wild. And the downstairs is a chocolate factory with samples and merch.
Downstairs, we met Preston, the chocolate scientist of Onyx, and he was very friendly and informative. He specifically mentioned that this Onyx was very family friendly, which was nice because our one year old was losing her mind at the time haha. I have two little kids, and at first I felt a little out of place with them. But after talking to Preston I felt a lot more at ease.
My cappuccino was lovely. Delicious flavor profile and perfectly extracted. 10/10. We are so excited to have this Onyx in...
