Chmura’s is a time trip back to when most small towns had their own bakery. Great Polish bakeries were never far away.
Just to step into the tidy, wonderful smelling bakery is a trip into the past. Mr Chmura’s picture still greets you at the door.
My favorites are thei rye bead and rolls, but most of all their old fashioned pastries. Cherry, raspberry, and fig squares. They carry a variety of brownies. Their spectacular large chocolate pastries are impossible to find in most places.
This is pastry made before big-box bakeries in Walmart put the town bakery out of business.
There’s no comparison between their fresh, tasty treats and the gummy, oversweet unnatural desserts in big box stores.
Oh, and special recognition to the staff, young (?) Polish girls who allow you plenty of time to make your selection. The staff is exceptionally polite, patient, and good natured. They’ll explain what’s in a complicated pastry.
When there’s a holiday rush they move along quickly but never rush.
When I attended college some 40 years ago in New Britain, there was a similar small Polish chain, Cousins. I haven’t had such good pastries since.
Chmura’s is so good that I drive from northern CT to Chicopee about once a month to visit.
No place I visit these days gives me a brief, happy time trip to the past like Chmura’s.

Read moreI was so excited to have found a neighborhood family-style bakery that seemed to offer wonderful freshly made goods and do custom cakes too. My first clue of my resulting disappointment should have been when every request I made was shot down. But I found a design that the decorator was “comfortable” doing based on what she had already made that was visible in the display case so I picked that and gave the specific colors I wanted. When I came to pick up the cake, it was not the right design nor the way I had asked for the colors to be done. What’s the point of taking the time to come in to place a “custom” order if the decorator is going to do whatever she wants anyway? This special occasion only happens once in a person’s life so it shouldn’t be too much to ask to get exactly what you want to celebrate it. Lesson learned. I’ll stick to them for daily breads or baked goods for myself but something this important for someone else? I’ll be going...
Read moreToday uuh about 9:05 June 20, 2024 went to buy seedless rye for lunch Kielbasa with guests over. We'll your rye bread was worst I have yet to be seen. I asked the girl to pick up bread show me. Iasked for a puffy one..she said they're all like that . I said that's not serveable at all they were alot flater than usual..not good for a rye to make a sandwhich. Ask the Clerk that worked then at that time. She will definitely remember the conversation. She said that's the way it"did Rise". So I looked at the marble and was a lot better so I purchased that. I think the Baker that day or night before needs re training on preparing the dough..for proper ,"rising" of the dough to bake a better rye bread. That Chmura Bakery is noted for..if you were there to see that Mr Salvador I have to believe you would not have been happy with your presentation of seedless rye bread. It really was like half moon....
