Hy-Vee Market Grille — Restaurant in Springfield

Feeling rather disappointed... My friend circle raves about this restaurant's offerings, caterings to children, and importance to the neighborhood.

I came in, party of 7, around 10 AM. We were seated in a horseshoe booth near the restrooms. The waitress who came to our table was visibly upset. She let us know immediately that we were not seated in an actual section, and that her section was clear across the restaurant. She advised we would have to yell to her for things, but we'd get our food.

It took almost 20 minutes for our order to be taken. When we asked for more coffee, she responded "I'll try." It took another 45 minutes to get our food (pancakes and eggs). While waiting, I asked another waitress if we could get a waitress in our section. She nodded, then proceeded to do nothing. The request for a bottle of hot sauce was taken with offense...

The food was good, and came out mostly as ordered. There was another 15 minute wait after asking for the bill. The waitress tried to walk away after delivering it, but we insisted she just take the card. From what I could tell, they were fully staffed, our waitress was just upset with being assigned our table and decided to take it out on us instead of management.

First off its Thanksgiving around noon, some isles like chips were not stocked well. Wife and I wanted snacks that were different than we can get at Wal-Mart and IGA. They had it in spades. The lady at the cheese area in the delli was great. She was very helpful in helping us to choose some great cheeses and then smoked/curried meats. Now the disappointing thing was the fresh salsa. There was seven or eight different ones and looked well made. The very bad thing was they all were wilting and dry looking. Cut a tomato and let set in the air for hrs until the edges start curling and this is what it appears like. Sad. So I went to the produce isle to get some the dates on a lot of the three different brands were expired. The liquor and spirits department was well stocked. Wife found several wines. I was impressed with the beer selection and happy to see a good selection of singles and six pack cartons to hold selections. We eat here 2 or three times a week just because it’s Yep blocks from our house. The staff is great but the cooks can’t get simple things right. It’s so bad that I started betting the manager (Dee) for free dinner if it came out cooked wrong. Here is a list of the things that I’ve sent back several times : salmon, bacon, hamburgers, chicken. Temps (rare,medium rare, well done) are rarely done correctly. It would be better if they didn’t ask what a customer prefers and just served a burger like a bar burger. When you order bacon they will ask “Limp or crispy” but that is often not cooked as ordered.

We will continue to eat here on the nights that I work late. And, each time there is a mess up I will now write a review. So, stay tuned for more updates. Until now I have refrained from writing reviews. But from now on I will...
