I've eaten food from Portillio's many times, but I've never had the time to go into the restaurant. This particular day, I had time. My sister and I went into the restaurant, which had an old, like 50s vibe. Not too bad. The menu was extensive, and I was trying to look at the menu and order. People entered the store, so I didn't want to take a long time. I ordered my usual: a Regular Italian beef- dry, with all the trash on it (hot peppers, sweet, and mozzarella cheese) and sauce on the side. The woman asked me if I wanted fries with that, then a drink. I asked her which was best, the fries or the onion rings, and she said they were both excellent. I said yes, I want onion rings. Is that a combo (Meaning sandwich, fries, and drink. That's what I'm used to from most places)? I got them both small since it includes free Refills. My sister also ordered a Regular Italian Beef- Wet with extra sauce. Soon, our number came up, and my sister got our food and drinks. We got our food out of the bag and opened it up. We first noticed that there was only one extra sauce. She told me that I could have it. I opened my sandwich and saw all the trash and cheese on it. The Italian beef looked delicious. I took a bite and got a little meat. I picked up a pepper and ate that. I took another bite and noticed something else in my sandwich. I started to move the stuff off the sandwich and saw a Polish sausage. What? I didn't ask for that. I asked my sister if she could take it back up. We looked up, and the line was so long now. We saw a worker cleaning tables and asked for assistance. He informed us to take it to the pick-up spot and let them know. My sister took it up for me because I'm moving slowly. They understood and changed my "Combo" to a Regular Italian Beef. I looked at my receipt and saw the word combo. I didn't know that combo meant Italian beef and Polish sausage. I didn't get a chance to read everything on the menu. I opened my new sandwich, and it was wetish. Uuugh. The meat looked different; it wasn't brown and chopped like the first meat set. I just looked at it. I drank my drink and ate my onion rings—no sweet and sour sauce or onion ring sauce. I looked at my receipt again and noticed a price difference. I was upset because they knew when they changed my sandwich from a combo to a Regular, there was a price difference. I didn't ask her to go up there again; the line had gotten longer. We left and went through the drive-through to place an order for my daughter. She wanted a Maxwell Polish sausage with extra extra onions and mustard. We got our food, and I just put it in the back seat. I didn't think to look at it. I gave it to her, and she said thanks. She removed it from the fridge to heat it for a minute. She didn't tell me until that night that the Polish was burnt! We do like our Polish sausages more done than some others, but not like that. She only ate what she could and then threw the rest away. I feel like I wasted forty dollars...
Read moreI had been to Portillo’s in Chicago. I had enjoyed the restaurant there. It is the epitome of what folks think a Chicago dog is. An all beef hotdog steamed, and served on a steamed poppyseed roll, with all the accoutrements: relish, mustard, celery salt, sport peppers, A quarter slice dill pickle, two half sliced tomatoes.
I was very excited to hear that Portillo‘s had opened up a Michigan Location not too far from me in Sterling Heights, in the lakeside mall outer parking ring! Today I had the time and took the drive out. This is the first restaurant Portillo’s opened in Michigan. The architecture and decor of this restaurant is something to behold! It is a modern looking building with an outdoor patio and a revolving door to get inside. Once inside, I felt like I was in a combination of Disneyland and a tribute to Detroit and it’s industrial past, present and future. There is memorabilia on every square inch of wall space and an old model T tow truck suspended from the ceiling overhanging the main dining room. There are assembly line tracks, pulleys, hooks, and racks of automobile accessories everywhere! You actually forgot that you were in a restaurant!
Oh yeah! Then there’s the food. I had the Chicago dog and fries. It was just like the Portillo‘s in Chicago. Authentic and amazingly delicious! There is also a dessert bar here! I saw somebody order a chocolate cake slice that looked like it was the size of Texas! LOL! They also have Italian beef sandwiches, chop salads, and burgers and all looked phenomenal! I can’t wait to come back and try everything! I say this: Come to Portillo’s just for the architecture and decor, stay for the food! Don’t...
Read moreYesterday was my second time there and it was really disappointing. The lines were long and there was a register issue with the people in front of us. It was taking a long time to get sorted out and the other line was moving right along. After every customer ordered on the other line we looked to the cashier who continued to take orders from just her line while us and another gentleman just stood there waiting. The rest of our family had long since ordered and they continued taking orders from the other line that consisted of people who all came in long after us. We asked if there was any way that someone could take our order as well as the rest of our party had ordered and we had been waiting a long time. The employees acted like we were out of order for asking if we could order as well. They finally got it taken care of and took our order, no apology. The rest of our party had their food and we're mostly done eating by the time we got ours. I ordered a beef and cheddar croissant that was not on a croissant, we were charged for cheese sauce we did not order, I ordered a lemon cake shake and got a vanilla one instead. When this was questioned I was given a strawberry lemon cake shake. I drank it because by now it's whatever. Just to be clear, there were 18 orders between ours and my father's who was 2 ahead of us in line when we started. I felt like we had been patient but after watching them take order after order of multiple groups who came in long after us, it was frustrating. We drove over an hour for that meal for father's day. I'll stick to the Peoria Portillos...
