Penn Station is a sub shop which specializes in grilled subs. In my opinion, they are among the best sub shops in town both for quality of food and for quality of service.
To begin with, their sub options are quite varied. They offer cheesesteak, italian sausage, pizza subs, artichoke, numerous chicken options and most classic cold cuts. These are grilled along with the veggies (though you can order them not to be on cold cut subs), and served on fresh bread they bake and toast daily.
Unlike most sandwich shops, they offer fries as a side in addition to chips. The fries are cut by hand and fried with a bit of skin on them, giving them a crisp and natural taste. They also squeeze lemonade by hand, but if you prefer, they also offer Pepsi products and Luzianne tea, both unsweetened and sweet.
For a 6" sub, fries, and a drink, expect about $10. Larger subs and fry orders can cost you up to $15. To me, the unique taste is worth a dollar or two more than Subway or Jimmy John's, but it's tough to compare grilled subs to cold ones.
Service at this location is fantastic. If you are a regular customer, they will know your name and order (if you have a regular one) in no time. Grilling takes a few minutes, so if you are on a time crunch, call ahead! They are busiest from 11-1, especially on Saturday. But I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes for food during the busiest times...
Read moreFriend and I ordered online for take out, was not convenient. Many other groups were waiting for help when we walked all the way to the back of the restaurant. Approached a very rude cashier, who told us there weren’t cookies available, which we had already paid for. Gave two bags of chips to remedy. Watched no sandwiches made over an extended period of time. Then I watched the manager handle food and add cheese to a sandwich without washing her hands. It was disgusting. Six minutes after our quoted ready time, our sandwiches were delivered. My sandwich was missing cheese, which was a relief after seeing the lack of gloves, but the meat added was flaky, dry, and minimal in quantity. My friends philly cheese steak was missing vegetables and her fries were room temp at best. Even filling out email contact to them was...
Read moreThis Penn Station is across the street from Walmart on the West side of Springfield. The food was great but not a good value on this trip. It was difficult to enjoy because the place felt frantic with a lot of yelling going on by employees behind the line. It was about orders needed and orders being corrected; normal stuff for a lunch rush. But I've been to plenty of places that are able to do it quieter and/or sounding more professional. The lunch rush is also not a great time to have someone at the register who still needs a little more experience. That one is truly understandable these days when staffing is incredibly difficult to maintain. As I said, it wasn't a good value for me "that trip." I am definitely going back but it'll probably be to-go. Please 👍if this...
