I’m visiting from Texas and had a truly disappointing and uncomfortable experience at Nadine’s Hashhouse in St. Louis. I was there with my family—a group of over 10 people—on June 29, 2025. What we thought would be a pleasant brunch outing turned into an experience that gave off strong racist vibes and left us all feeling disrespected and singled out.
While seated, my cousin was holding her 1-year-old, who had picked up a single packet of grape jelly. A woman who identified herself as the owner approached our table and told my cousin that she could not allow the baby to play with the jelly packet because “people don’t like when the condiments are touched.” My cousin calmly responded that she understood and that the baby would just keep the one he already had.
Shockingly, the owner then attempted to take the jelly packet out of the baby’s hand, and when she couldn’t, she began removing every condiment from the table. When we asked why, especially given that we were a large group who clearly intended to eat (and could certainly pay for condiments and napkins), her response escalated the situation further.
She then told our entire party to leave the restaurant, stating: “I knew I was going to have problems out of y’all.” That statement alone felt loaded and deeply offensive. We were all dressed respectfully, having just come from a prior function. We weren’t loud, unruly, or disrespectful in any way. Her attitude and actions felt degrading, belittling, and discriminatory.
While a business owner has the right to refuse service, the way we were treated was not about policy—it was about prejudice. The energy, tone, and language used by the owner gave the clear impression that we were not welcome from the moment we walked in. It’s incredibly disheartening to experience this kind of treatment in 2025, especially in a city as diverse as St. Louis.
To anyone considering this place: if you value being treated with dignity and respect—especially if you’re a person of color—I strongly urge you...
Read moreGood Afternoon.... My family and I went to Nadine's Hash House 1802 S Broadway, st. Louis Mo, Sunday June 29,2025. Our experience was the ABSOLUTEWORST!!!! , all because my 1yr old son was playing with a PACKET OF JELLY!!!! the "Nadine (who never introduced herself) got in my wife's face and said ..."can you make sure he doesnt touch or play with the condiments". My wife says well its only a jelly packet, he'll keep this one. Nadine says "well how about i just take the whole thing" i reached over and said "how about you not, because we will need those items when the food comes". She stared at us and walked away, in between that time the waitress completely stopped taking everyones order at the table and she walked away. My wife asked the waitress as she was leaving our table "who was that lady?" The waitress said "thats the owner". Nadine comes back to the table very aggressively and says "im just going to ask that you leave because you all arent my kind of ppl". To this response we said we'll gladly leave. I told her that her actions were simply unnecessary and I thanked the one waiter man who treated us very well. I have also put screenshots of other ppl experience here that was VERY similar to ours, just to showcase this was not a 1 off isolatedsituation. There should be a NO BLACKS ALLOWED plastered on the front door of this establishment. I would never patronize this racist lady or her business. But you can do what you want, just sharing our experience. Have a good day and No I'm not giving this...
Read morefood was fine, average diner food, nothing incredibly ground breaking. the owner, though, really ruined the atmosphere for us. we had a server who was brand new and expressed to us early on it was only their third day, which we were fine with! it became apparent, though, that no one was doing anything to help her and she wasn’t shadowing anyone, meaning she was making small mistakes. the server was kind to us, though, and everyone else.
another patron was seated shortly after we were seated and waited only about 5 mins or even less before the owner came over and asked if she had been helped, to which she said no. the owner then proceeds to apologize profusely and take her order, and makes our server go and apologize to her. later, we then overheard the owner go back to this patron and tell her to NOT tip our waitress.
despite the owner’s need to go above and beyond for this barely inconvenienced patron, she never once greeted us, asked how we were doing, or told us to have a good day when we left, even though we were sat right next to the other patron at the bar. the only acknowledgement we got was when she took one of our water glasses and came back and harshly placed it back in front of us without a word.
definitely won’t be coming back to a place that sabotages the livelihood of their employees for the sake of remedying an issue that had already been addressed by a...
