Let me start off by saying, this place was highly recommended to me by everyone. I came in with my five month old in a stroller and although I was offered the small lift to the main bar/small eatery, it didn’t work. Three employees tried to make it work but to no avail.
It may boast to be a family friendly place, but the lack of high chairs, non-booth sitting made that statement false. To add to that, we observed the hostess yell at a family with kids to restrict them to their table - even though this place has very much open-seating, and many also choose to just stand around, totally normal.
Draft selection is absolutely outstanding, as well as their liquor. As far as food, I found it a bit odd that you couldn’t order food from the bar, but nonetheless it wasn’t a problem. What was a problem, however, was the undisclosed added gratuity to tickets. As a decade-long service industry worker and bartender, I understand that it may be easier, but it should be stated on their drink/draft menu for complete transparency. One of our guests actually ended up tipping $60 over their tab which sadly, included their 20% tip already. $60 for our tab was more than 20%, almost 3X as much, but the sour taste it left us was discouraging for a next visit.
Lastly, we opened a tab and the bartenders couldn’t find it, definitely embarrassing if you’re trying to order to...
Read moreI went here on a Saturday evening for dinner and a beer. The main thing I noticed almost immediately was that the staff were largely disinterested and dismissive- starting with no greeting when you walk in. The bartender seemed impatient and almost offended that we didn’t immediately know our groups drinks order- however, this was our first time in, and there is a huge menu to consider. They were out of the only cider they carry, and the bartenders response was “maybe you should just have a glass of wine”. No apology for being out of stock nor any real effort to find a substitute. We ordered some pizzas, too, which confusingly, you have to order from a different counter. They were tasty and large - we had leftovers. When we went to close out, we noticed two extra beers that we did not order on our check. We mentioned that to a bartender, and he had an accusatory tone- like we were trying to swindle them. They gave us a refund for the drinks we didn’t order but no apology for charging our card $15 more than we ordered. Finally, the bathroom was horrifying disgusting. Like, puddles of water and pee, soap running down the walls, a roll of TP sitting on top of the holder. Gross. And this was at like 6pm… I won’t be back. I left feeling guilty, like we were a burden...
Read moreUCBC’s second location is significantly more accessible. Located in The Grove neighborhood it is a huge brewery and bierhall designed to feel like a German bierhall. Here the food and drinks are ordered at separate bars and there is general seating both inside and out. The food window is low and very accessible, staff will help you to your table with your plate. The bar is a little higher, but the staff are helpful and friendly. Tables are large, wooden common tables with benches but staff has always been helpful about pulling the bench down so I can fit at the table. The food leans toward traditional German. Don’t pass up the pommes frites or one of the sausage boards, delicious! My beer expert says they have very good beer and I can attest to the deliciousness of their cider. While you are here, take a self guided tour of the brewery, completely accessible. Bathrooms are spacious with grab bars and a small parking lot with one accessible spot is attached the brewery. Street parking is abundant on side roads around the brewery which have less traffic and are safer for unloading and loading. There are two levels and staff will assist with in door lift which has been fucntional on...
