Attention Peter & Lisa Chang - in the interest of giving you some solid feedback to improve, please feel free to reach out and happy to chat with you about the total experience for the party of 4 adults and 2 children that I had if you have further qeustions.
Arrival - they showed us to a booth that added a small table that made for clearly an awkward experience as the hostess was aware and said she tried to text me (which i never received as i showed her). small issue, but nothing major that we weren't willing to wait 10 minutes for until a larger table cleared to make for a better dining experience.
Music - the choice of music was interesting to say the least. There was electronic/EDM music being played at about 50% higher than it should have been making it the focus and less ambiance and prohibitively hard to hear the conversation at the table.
The food - the dishes while having flavor were probitively salty. some more than others especially the cauliflower dish we order.
That one dish we had a few bites of and upon the waitress's second visit to our table, i kindly told her the issue and she took it back and was quick to say she would remove it from the bill. After removing it FROM the table, she came back and said she would give 50% off after talking to the manager. So, mind you, we didn't enjoy the dish, ordered plenty of other food and then said to take it off and then to come back and say they were going to charge us 50% was pretty comical :) I spoke to the manager and said it's not about the marginal $10, but about the principle. After such an experience and food, i would have just disputed the whole charge with my credit card company.
in any case, after a short conversation, he agreed to take it off - just was amazed i had to have the conversation in the first place.
I realize we're in a culture where business owners are under strains, but to force 20% gratuity on a party of 4 adults and 2 kids is a stretch and i found this to be a bit much for service that was mediocre. I concede times have changed, but I think for a restaurnt in downtown stamord, there's opportuntiies to improve and i strongly recommend having a sit down with the GM regarding this and speaking to him on best practices around...
Read moreAfter dining here last night I was simply shocked to see that this restaurant can average 4.4 starts. Quite frankly, the restaurant itself is not aesthetically appealing, the service was sub-par (more on this later), and the food was palatable at best and simply disgusting at worst. We started off with the fried pork belly, which was fine, but it was more just very thin fried pieces of bacon fat than it was a piece of belly. It was soggy with oil, which indicates the oil used to fry it was likely at too low of a temperature. For our second appetizer we ordered the short rib over millet which was a huge mistake. Now before I describe how foul this dish truly was I want to make clear that I really do pride myself on being an adventurous eater and appreciating food from other cultures. I have traveled around the world putting myself out of my comfort zone and trying new dishes, but nothing I have eaten could have prepared me for how foul this dish was. I am still unsure whether or not this dish was intended to taste this way or if the food had actually gone bad. When it was clear we did not want the rest of this dish our waiter returned to take our plates away and made a comment that "no one really like that dish". I was dumbfounded that a dish so universally despised could remain on the menu or that our waiter would not have made some mention of this when we clearly did not understand what we were ordering. When it came to the mains the experience was not much better. My prawns were overcooked and there were barely any vermicelli noodles at all in my dish, which cost $23 I might add. The chicken fried rice was one of the only palatable things on the table and it was mediocre at best. Basically any fast Chinese food place in Stamford has better fried rice. I am truly shocked that anyone would choose to eat here over any of the other asian food options in Stamford, of which there are a number of...
Read moreI visited Peter Chang with my family last night, and unfortunately, it wasn’t the best dining experience. While the food had some high points, there were several issues that made the evening less enjoyable. One of the main concerns was the timing of the dishes—our food came out at different intervals, which left some of us with cold dishes by the time everything arrived.
The restaurant’s aesthetic was decent, though hearing Latin music in a Chinese restaurant was a bit surprising. While it’s not something I’d typically expect, I assume there was a reason for this choice. It didn’t exactly add to the experience for me, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker either.
Our server was very kind and did her best, but there seemed to be a bit of a language barrier. I’ll give grace on that because learning takes time, and she was as helpful as she could be.
As for the food, the flounder in hot chili oil soup was the standout dish. The fish was soft and mushy—perhaps that’s the intended texture—but it was seasoned wonderfully, with bold, spicy flavors, and arrived piping hot. I’d rate it a solid 4.5/5 and would definitely recommend it. The orange chicken was plated beautifully but lacked much flavor, making it an okay dish rather than memorable. The Golden Mountain chicken could have been great, but it arrived somewhat cold, which detracted from the overall experience. On the other hand, the dumplings and fried flounder were well-prepared, striking the perfect balance between softness and crunchiness.
Overall, Peter Chang provided an okay experience, but it wouldn’t be my top choice for hosting family or grabbing a quick bite. The long wait for food and lack of consistency in temperature were disappointing, especially given how the restaurant was when it first opened. With a few adjustments, it could reclaim its former reputation, but as it stands now, I’d consider other options...
