It was my first time at Dolan's, and man, was it packed! It was Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., and they were bustling! You order in the back, and they give you a table flag so they can bring your meal to you. They advertised spring cocktails, which sounded good, but you had to go to the bar separately to order. I tried the blueberry lavender lemonade. It was tasty but small for $10, in my opinion. I ordered the 3 piece chicken tenders with ranch dip and coleslaw. If you order a soft drink, it is self-serve at a fountain station to the side of the ordering station. Others in my party ordered the chopped pork plate with Brunswick stew and cowboy beans. The food was delivered to the table quickly in disposable cups and paperlined pans with plastic wear utensils. Honestly, for $50 for just the food, I expected a better presentation. The pork plate was served with two cold slices of plain white bread. While we ate, I noted 5 people throwing away their disposables after finishing their meals, and literally, all of them threw away the bread uneaten. I'd suggest they iust quit with the bread because we trashed ours as well. How about some cornbread muffins or a biscuit instead ~ just saying. When my chicken tenders arrived, the ranch dip was missing, so I had to go back and stand in line to retrieve it. By the time I got back to the table, my chicken was cold. I'm not sure how hot it was to begin with anyway. The breading was flaky and good, but the tenders were definitely on the small side. The pork plate was well received, but again, served warm not hot. The BBQ sauce was in a squirt bottle on the table with two choices, of which the red was better.
Overall, it was good but didn't impress as much as it could have . . . Based on the crowd, Statesboro natives seem to be fans, but it could be that it is still a relatively new...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe have been in Statesboro for about 7 or 8 months and finally got around to stopping in at Dolan's. We actually heard very good reviews about it from friends and co-workers. However, the day that we went, the ribs tasted like they had been cooked hours before. It actually tasted like ribs you would get from the frozen section at a supermarket just to bring home and cook. And I was much confused as the bread with my order was literally just two pieces of plain white, round-top, bread that was just randomly tossed on the plate. It was not toasted or anything. Other BBQ places I have been to always toast the bread. And then the drink machine. It was clear the Co2 was running out as every drink was too syrupy. We told one of the workers and while she was very nice, she had no clue what we were talking about as she stated that she didn't drink sodas so she didn't know what we were referring. She had to go tell someone in the back. I'm so confused about this one - how do you work at a restaurant and not know about the Co2 in drink machines? We finally just gave up and left. As this is a college town, this place may be best suited for college students that simply don't know any better or don't care. Yet, I would not recommend this establishment to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSTOP WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING... and get yourself to this place. Like now! I really thought having lived in Memphis and traveling the South like I have, I'd eaten at all the really good barbecue places, but I will publicly admit here and now that I was wrong. THIS -- this Dolan's place -- is a must stop for a foodie of any sort and BBQ junkie whether they pray to the pig or the chicken. The service is fast (my order was at my table in about 5 minutes), and the prices are fair ($8 for the daily special and $12 for my rib/chicken/chopped sampler). The local food takeaway section they have is impressive (check out the different pimento cheeses), and the bar is well stocked if you want to que there. Dolan's deserves extra culinary kudos for its sauces. Most "homemade" sauces that BBQ joints serve can be over the top in one way or another -- too hot, too vinegary, too this or this -- but the Sisters White, Seven Oaks Mustard, and Grape Vine Road Red are hands-down the best trio of BBQ sauces you'll find 'round these parts. If you're coming to Statesboro, Dolan's is worthy of your presence. Bring lots of napkins and an empty tummy because your love for food is about to get gooey good and...
