BBQ Meets Ice Cream
In a quirky establishment where aviation meets mastication, Kline's Dairy Bar & Hog Wild BBQ offers an interesting fusion of comfort food concepts. The space's most striking feature - an upside-down airplane suspended from the rafters - sets the stage for what could be called an unconventional dining experience. The industrial-chic garage doors hint at a potentially vibrant summer atmosphere, though they currently contribute to a somewhat sterile ambiance. However, the friendly and efficient staff helps warm up the space, providing prompt service with genuine smiles.
The BBQ Chronicles The Big Carolina BBQ sandwich emerges as a safe but unremarkable choice. While the pulled pork holds its own, it lacks that special something that makes great BBQ memorable. The sauce selection presents two options: the thin, underwhelming Carolina sauce and the more appealing Hog Wild variety. The sides tell a similar tale - the baked beans whisper of their possible supermarket origins, while the potato salad stands proud as the plate's unexpected hero.
Sweet Redemption Where this establishment truly soars is in its frozen treats department. The Reese's Overload creation demonstrates Kline's mastery of the dairy arts. Picture this: velvety custard, generously studded with Reese's Pieces and peanut butter cups, all harmoniously bound together with a perfectly complementary sauce. The thickness and creaminess of the custard showcase proper technique and quality ingredients.
The Verdict Kline's presents an interesting dichotomy - while the BBQ might leave smoke enthusiasts wanting more, the dairy bar offerings could convert even the most discerning dessert critics. For BBQ purists, this might not be your final destination, but for those seeking a sweet ending to their day, the custard creations merit a dedicated visit.
Think of Kline's as that friend who's okay at singing but absolutely kills it at dancing - you go to see them dance, not for their karaoke performance. In this case, save your BBQ cravings for elsewhere, but definitely make a beeline for their frozen treats, where the cheerful staff will happily guide you through their creative...
Read moreMy husband and I have been to the Staunton Klines several times. It's always been really good and friendly service. Today, I was in a huge rush to get to his tennis tournament. I wanted to call ahead and place an order to save time. When I called the girl said that they normally don't do over the phone orders. I told it that it was ok and I'd just place an order when I got there. She asked me if I was sure I wanted to do that-I then told her I was in a huge rush. She went ahead and took my order. I apologized for the inconvenience and thanked her for helping me. When I went to pick up my order, the girl at the register was short with me but rang me up quickly. I got my receipt, thanked the cashier and was ready to walk to my car when she stopped me and said loudly at the register "You know we won't take orders over the phone if we are busy. It's just because we weren't busy that we were able to take your order, but normally we don't do that." I just said ok and walked to my car. I felt like it was uncalled for. Everybody could hear her and it made me feel like a "problem customer." I would think a place like this would want over the phone orders-that means more business! If they didn't do over the phone orders, she should have just told me when I called. I told her over the phone that I would just order when I got there. It is not good to embarrass customers at your place...
Read moreStopped by Kline’s Ice Cream in Afton during a road trip — absolutely worth the detour. I was driving through the area, taking in the mountain scenery along Blue Ridge Parkway, and spotted Kline’s tucked right off the road. Decided to make a quick stop for a treat, and I’m glad I did — it turned into one of those simple, memorable travel moments.
The place has that classic small-town charm — just a walk-up window, a clean open lot, a few shaded tables, and the smell of fresh waffle cones in the air. I tried the flavor of the week and it was outstanding — creamy, not too sweet, and you can tell it’s made fresh. This isn’t your average ice cream — it’s the kind that brings back childhood summer memories, no gimmicks, just done right.
Service was fast and friendly, even with a steady stream of customers. Locals and travelers alike — all with smiles, taking a break from the road. It's the kind of place that makes you slow down, take a breath, and enjoy something simple.
If you’re on a drive through Afton, heading toward the mountains or just looking to break up the trip, this is a perfect stop. Easy to get in and out, and the ice cream alone is worth going out of your way for. I’ll definitely swing by again next time I’m...
