Lucas Pizza – Excellent Pies with a Cozy Atmosphere, and Room to Grow on Service I recently stopped by Lucas Pizza for what turned out to be a flavorful and satisfying meal—one that reaffirmed how important great food is, and also reminded me how much the overall dining experience is shaped by thoughtful, attentive service. Tucked into a casual strip mall with easy parking, the space has a warm, relaxed energy. It's the kind of local place you want to root for: welcoming, unpretentious, and centered around what matters most—delicious pizza. 🍕 Pizza That Hits the Mark The real star here is the pizza. The crust hits that sweet spot—crispy outside, chewy inside. The sauce is vibrant without being too sweet or heavy, and the cheese is clearly high-quality, applied generously but with balance. I tried several pizzas that really stood out: Margherita Pizza – Simple and elegant. The basil was fresh, the tomato sauce flavorful, and the mozzarella melted into the crust beautifully. A go-to classic done right. Pepperoni Pizza – Crisped edges, a nice char on the bottom, and plenty of cheese. A solid, satisfying version of a crowd favorite. Specialty Pizza with Kale and Meats – A creative combination that worked surprisingly well. The kale added a bit of bite and freshness, while the savory meats grounded the whole flavor profile. Soppressata Pizza – My favorite of the night. The soppressata had just enough spice and crisped up around the edges perfectly. It added a bold, complex layer to an already great pie. Every pizza was hot, well-portioned, and clearly made with care. This is the kind of place where the food justifies sitting down for a proper meal, not just grabbing a slice and heading out. 🍺 Vibe & Ambiance The dining area is relaxed and inviting. It’s clean, casual, and feels like a friendly neighborhood spot. The lighting is warm, the layout simple but functional—nothing overly fancy, just a pleasant space to enjoy your food. It’s clear the kitchen team takes pride in what they’re doing, and the food absolutely reflects that. ⚠️ The Service – Some Areas to Improve While the food and vibe were on point, the service did present a couple of bumps. During our visit, a couple entered through a side door and sat down at an open table. Instead of gently redirecting them or offering a quick explanation, they were asked to leave. It was an unfortunate moment, especially since the restaurant wasn’t full and there was no sign of confusion or line issues. While policies are important, how they’re communicated can make all the difference. Apart from that, general service was a bit uneven. It wasn’t rude or inattentive—just slightly understaffed or undercoordinated. Water refills and check-ins took longer than expected, and a few small interactions felt a little off tempo. That said, it’s also worth noting that every place has its off moments. With a bit more front-of-house polish, Lucas Pizza could easily elevate the full experience to match the quality coming out of the kitchen. 🛠️ Suggestions for Growth To complement their strong food offering, a few light service adjustments could go a long way: Handle guest situations with a welcoming tone – A friendly “Next time please use the main entrance” would’ve preserved the experience without confrontation. Tighten service rhythm – Just a little more attention to pacing, checking in, and syncing the front-of-house with the kitchen would make things feel more seamless. Lead with hospitality – In a place where the food already shines, a small dose of warmth and grace in service can push the whole experience into five-star territory. ✅ Final Take Lucas Pizza has everything you'd want in a neighborhood favorite: top-tier pizza, a laid-back atmosphere, and a few real standouts on the menu—especially the Soppressata, Margherita, and kale-meat combo pizzas. The service could use a touch more warmth and consistency, but it's not a dealbreaker—just something to be aware of.

Update . . . July 9, 2024 Sat at the bar tonight, great service with Brian & Sierra, staff always pitching in to clear dishes, top off drinks, coordination is Excellent! Enjoyed chatting with Chef Justin, as he tended his Brick Oven . . . rotating those handmade pizzas. Thankyou for “ the show” up front watching your crew whirl dough, and serve meals expeditiously to clients. Added photos of your new beet salad appetizer with oranges, escarole, candied walnuts( delicious) , and you sent over free side of olives & two of your fantastic beef & pork meatballs appetizer! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😃 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * May 21, 2024 - Calling all “ Pizza Lovers” who crave Neopolitan style pizza . . . 🍕 This is the Best around ! Chef Justin Hershey / Manuel Borguez Paxton Jr. has Italian family traditions, Culinary Education, and experience under Chef Mark Militello & Chef Ian Boden! My wife & I drove to Staunton last night, oh my there’s a line outside. “Line waiting” isn’t my thing, but Great Pizza is worth the wait. There’s inside & outside dining, both were packed. Took us about 30 to 40 minutes for a table. Once seated, our server Julia was excellent & helpful on background info ! Pizza Luca opened early May ( 2024) , Chef Justin also owns Chicano Boy Taco next door in Staunton. (Also a Chicano Boy Taco in North Chesterfield, VA) The menu offers mostly Italian dishes . . . but we had our mind made up on PIZZA! Fresh ingredients is vital ! Walk over to the kitchen, which is behind the counter, check out their enormous brick oven. . . Heats to 900 degrees, cooks a Neopolitan ( thin crust) style pizza in 90 seconds. Chef Justin was on duty, slinging pies, checking on each pie as it was going “in” and coming “out”! That’s quality control 😃👍🏼. We enjoyed an Italian salad which we split ! Then I ordered the rosemary wings as appetizer! Heard about the wings, in line! They have the best wings! Even better than my wings at home. Kudos the Chef. . . A crispy outside layer, not covered in heavy batter. The meat is tender & savory in the spices & tangy sweet coating! 😃👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Timed well, out pops our Pepperoni pizza ! Cooked perfectly, this is the best Neopolitan style pizza we’ve found in the area ! Wonderful evening at Luca Pizza! Julia brought over a complimentary homemade Cannoli , we ate the Connoli at home! Which was very good, thank you Chef ! 😃👍🏼. We’ll have to return and try more of their Italian menu entrees! I highly recommend this restaurant, it’s worth the wait!

Nestled in the Staunton VA community is a charming Italian-style eatery that shows great promise. The open kitchen concept, anchored by an impressive pizza oven, immediately catches the eye and sets expectations high. Their thoughtfully curated menu, focused primarily on pizza for lunch with expanded options for dinner, demonstrates a commitment to quality and consistency that's refreshing in today's "jack-of-all-trades" restaurant landscape. The star of the show is undoubtedly the pizza. A delightful hybrid of American and Neapolitan styles, the crust strikes a perfect balance between soft and tender. The sauce harmonizes sweetness and acidity beautifully, while toppings like flavorful pepperoni and delectable sweet red peppers elevate each bite. A sprinkle of grated Romano cheese adds the perfect finishing touch. However, this diamond in the rough still has some polishing to do. The limited front-of-house staff, while likely intended to create an intimate atmosphere, sometimes results in extended wait times. More importantly, the staff-guest interactions could benefit from a warmer, more engaging approach to truly make each visit memorable. The open kitchen concept, while exciting, also puts food preparation practices in the spotlight. There's an opportunity here for the team to showcase their commitment to hygiene and food safety, ensuring that every aspect of the dining experience meets the high standards set by their excellent pizza. Despite these growing pains, the foundation for something truly special is evident. With some fine-tuning of service practices and a renewed focus on creating a welcoming, interactive dining experience, this restaurant has the potential to become a beloved local institution. For pizza lovers and those seeking a cozy dining spot, this place is worth a visit. While there's room for improvement, the quality of the food and the evident passion behind the concept make it a promising addition to our local culinary scene. I'm looking forward to returning and exploring more of their menu in the future, hoping to see this hidden gem truly shine.
