I also came here the same day I visited another seafood market, and was looking for the same thing....large lobster tails. They didn't have any but did have Stripped Bass and Sea Bass. The guy told me the catch just came in but being from Miami and knowing what to look for in TRUKY FRSH FISH, I saw otherwise. There were 3 fish, a Sea Bass and a 2 Stripped Bass that was definitely fresh and looked like the just caught it. I purchased these. The rest looked to be a few days old (maybe 3-5 days +).
3-5 days is ok but not good enough for me personally. The way you tell if a fish is truly fresh is by the eyes. If the eyes are clear, fresh, and shiny, then you'd better jump on it. Unfortunately you can't always go by the skin, depending on the type of fish. But the rule for the eyes will show to be true everything. If the eyes look dark or green, the fish is at least a few days old. This is the reason I seldom but filets in the window. Once the head is gone, you're taking a gamble.
This location does clean the fish for you and I have to say, I've only been one other place that cleaned them as good as this location and that other place was in Miami.
The Dekalb Market also sells and cleans fish and while they're usually rushed for time due to long lines, they don't always clean them that good. Leaving you with additional time consuming work to do when you get home. 138 Fish Market did a retreat good job at cleaning. Keep up the...
Read moreSo first off i had to give a star just to write this review but this place deserves NEGATIVE 5 STARS... We went in this fish market thinking it had to be fresh and delicious because of the area its located in... Boy were we soooooo disgustingly wrong!!! We were prepared for a fish smell ( it is a fish market ) but it was horrible. Time we walked thru the door it was unbearable. It smelt like ROTTEN SPOILED FISH!!! I had to plug my nose to keep from gagging... The fish on ice was rotten and discolored. We immediately lost our appetite for fish. We ran out of that place only discover we could still smell that rotten smell. I cant believe these people are still in business nor can i believe they actually had 2 customers in line paying for something... im not sure if i will be able to eat seafood or fish for awhile now after experiencing this place... DISGUSTED!!! Oh yeah and the crablegs were...
Read moreService was good. Small fish market located in a strip mall. I wasn't impressed with the variety of fresh fish. I looked on the cooked menu and I saw trout; I was told the trout was frozen. I skipped the trout. There was a review explaining how to pick fresh fish and it stated if the eyes looked dull then you know the fish isn't fresh; well none of the fish was fresh then. I got the sea bass 5.99 LB . They were small. After reading the reviews I asked for the fish not to be fried hard. But, the fish were fried hard. I really didn't get any meat. Generally with Bass you get white thick flaky meat. Not this time not only was it fried hard, but the meat wasn't white and fresh looking. I wouldn't go back. I wasn't impressed & the food...
