I'd like to start this off by acknowledging that the Nightingale super club has been a staple in sturgeon bay fine dining establishments for many years. They have an excellent atmosphere at the bar as well as the dining area. The serving staff are courteous, kind and very attentive. Unfortunately I feel like the reputation of the Nightingale has allowed It's cooking staff to skate by on just that.. reputation.
Despite my previous opinions on the food at Nightingale I heard there was a new owner and I was willing to give the place another chance. I am sad to say I was sorely disappointed in the results. I had ordered a spinach and Artichoke dip, up next was a bowl of the crab and asparagus soup, and finally the prime rib special. The Artichoke dip came with an exceptionally thick layer of cheese which is fine especially by Wisconsin standards, But underneath Was a thick cream sauce that was completely void of any spinach or artichoke flavor or consistency. The crab and asparagus soup It was slightly better in the sense the base of the soup was creamy and rich, but completely missing any flavor. Despite the texture difference between the imitation crab and asparagus it was completely bland. There was not enough salt and pepper on my table to salvage this soup. Now we get to the biggest disappointment on the night the prime rib. When I envision prime rib, I think of a beautiful cut of meat that is served on a hot plate With a tenderness that you could almost cut with a fork. Each bite should be savory and mouth watering to the very end. At least that's what I was hoping for. The prime rib I got was cooked nicely but it was barely room temperature. In fact after the 1st bite I cut into the middle of the prime rib which was literally cold. And the hot plate underneath that was supposed to keep this warm and juicy.. also cold. Definitely not what I would expect from a $30 plate of meat. So my final thoughts the Nightingale supper club has a beautiful atmosphere a lovely bar and excellent serving staff. But I strongly believe the new owner has some work to bring the quality that has carried Nightingale super club all these years back to its Deserving title of Sturgeon Bay's staple fine dining...
Read moreLet me just start by saying wow. My wife and I at the recommendation of the Wisconsin supper club enthusiasts Facebook page decided to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary here. We called half an hour before open on the same day we wished to dine, and they took our reservation, no problem. We showed up 5 minutes early for our 7pm reservation, and were seated at 7:02(good start). Our server was Crystal, and she was amazing throughout the entire service. You can tell she takes pride in her job because her timing and communication were exquisite. As we were finishing our appetizer she came over and asked if we would be ok if she brought our salads right away as there was a large party and the kitchen staff didn't want to make us wait(A+). We said yes. Again, as we were finishing our salads there was Crystal with our entrees in hand. Both my wife and I have worked in the restaurant industry, but more specifically fine dining. I am normally scared to order blackened anything at a restaurant for fear that the cook will be too rushed to do it right, but wow my ribeye was a perfect medium rare and blackened to perfection. It literally melted in my mouth(my wife's ribeye was also perfect). Most restaurants don't understand how to properly trim a ribeye and leave a huge lip of fat on it. Nightingale does not. This steak was trimmed beautifully, there was just enough fat to give it that wonderful ribeye flavor, and not so much that it wasn't inedible. The only thing I can find to critique is that our prime rib nachos didn't have a cheese sauce but was melted shredded cheese. That being said they were still well made and portioned well.
T.L.D.R: We cannot recommend this supper club enough, and next time we are back in Door County you can count on our business. Thank you very much Crystal, the entire kitchen staff,(prep team and line cooks) and bar staff for making our anniversary...
Read moreWe came late on a friday night, fall season. Came due to the great reviews but really unimpressed. Service and drinks were excellent, but we ordered the bacon wrapped scallops and creamy crab and asparagus soup for apps - scallops were bone dry and bacon was over cooked to the point of being crumbly, and the sauce was so thin and sugary it tasted like they just drizzled off-brand maple syrup over the top and it rolled right off of the scallops. Soup just tasted like bland cream of asparagus soup. Rib eye was not bad, scallop dinner was just ok... we love paroning local restaurants when we travel, particularly supper clubs and particularly ones with surf/turf options. We were originally planning to order the chicken dinner but were both grateful and disappointed that our server honestly recommend something else - having both worked in the service industry we greatly appreciate when a server can both get a read on their customers and also make an honest recommendation... although we were in the mood for chicken, we would rather have a "just ok" ribeye than chicken that is really not great at all. Overall the drinks and service made up for the subpar food, but we would not go back nor recommend to others. Offering the benefit of the doubt, we are assuming that since we sat so late (around 830pm although they were still very busy at that time) we understand that nearing the end of the night, food quality can tend to take a backseat. But we recall paroning Donnys Glidden Lodge quite late in the past and not experiencing the...
