Read moreThere has been a lot of local love for Casa Lupe in the nearby neighborhood but...I can't see why.
I visit this restaurant about once per decade to see if things have improved. They have not.
On the visit a week ago, we were seated promptly indoors next to the bar, so we got some dialog we really didn't want.
Prices for entrees are probably slightly high for a Mexican place but they're astronomical for entrees and alcohol. I recall that a cheese quesadilla is about $13 and $9 for a bowl of guac. Really guys? At the Hilton, maybe. Margaritas were also about $13.
The restaurant was far from full, so no excuse for a 15 minute delay in taking our orders.
The real pain was a 50 minute wait for our food to be served, with no updates until about 30 minutes when I got up from my table to get the attention of service people. So--one star for service.
I ordered the most popular dish, chile verde, with promises of amazing flavor. When I got it, the flavor was meh. It did not live up to the advertising.
So--Lupe's does not pass. Not awful, but they got nearly everything wrong.
If you are in the market for very good Mex food, try Corazon in Sunnyvale on Mary, La Fiesta nearby in Mtn. View, or Estrellita's nearby in Los Altos. Much better food and service at...

I have been sampling other mexican restaurants in the area, and I think the major pitfall with Casa Lupe is that it didn't feel authentic. However, it did have more of a put together look to it and felt like a less "sketchy" restaurant which I know some people value in their dining experience.
I ordered the enchilado plate with three types of enchiladas: cheese, beef and chicken. I was happy with my choice, and it was definitely a solid meal, just a bit too americanized for my tastes.
Overall, this is a good place to come with your family. Our waiter was super friendly, the restaurant is very nice and clean, and there is plenty of seating so that you can make an evening of it.
However, if you are looking for an authentic experience, I recommend that you try some of the other restaurants in the area such as...
