There has been a lot of local love for Casa Lupe in the nearby neighborhood but...I can't see why.

I visit this restaurant about once per decade to see if things have improved. They have not.

On the visit a week ago, we were seated promptly indoors next to the bar, so we got some dialog we really didn't want.

Prices for entrees are probably slightly high for a Mexican place but they're astronomical for entrees and alcohol. I recall that a cheese quesadilla is about $13 and $9 for a bowl of guac. Really guys? At the Hilton, maybe. Margaritas were also about $13.

The restaurant was far from full, so no excuse for a 15 minute delay in taking our orders.

The real pain was a 50 minute wait for our food to be served, with no updates until about 30 minutes when I got up from my table to get the attention of service people. So--one star for service.

I ordered the most popular dish, chile verde, with promises of amazing flavor. When I got it, the flavor was meh. It did not live up to the advertising.

So--Lupe's does not pass. Not awful, but they got nearly everything wrong.

If you are in the market for very good Mex food, try Corazon in Sunnyvale on Mary, La Fiesta nearby in Mtn. View, or Estrellita's nearby in Los Altos. Much better food and service at...

This place is solid, but nothing to write home about. The food was good, the service was good, and the margaritas were good, but nothing came across as spectacular or memorable. I have been sampling other mexican restaurants in the area, and I think the major pitfall with Casa Lupe is that it didn't feel authentic. However, it did have more of a put together look to it and felt like a less "sketchy" restaurant which I know some people value in their dining experience.

I ordered the enchilado plate with three types of enchiladas: cheese, beef and chicken. I was happy with my choice, and it was definitely a solid meal, just a bit too americanized for my tastes.

Overall, this is a good place to come with your family. Our waiter was super friendly, the restaurant is very nice and clean, and there is plenty of seating so that you can make an evening of it.

However, if you are looking for an authentic experience, I recommend that you try some of the other restaurants in the area such as...

This is a once-great Mexican spot in Sunnyvale that’s still worth a visit. We have been coming to this restaurant for years, and while it remains a solid choice, I’ve noticed a decline in food quality recently. I ordered my usual dish, the wet chile verde pork burrito, and the quality of the pork didn’t quite live up to what I remembered from past visits. That said, the restaurant still has a lot going for it. The service is excellent, friendly, attentive, and efficient. The atmosphere and decor is welcoming, making it a great spot for families. The crowd tends to be a bit older, I noticed. Overall, while I wish the food were as consistently great as it once was, it’s still a very good option for a casual meal out.

Came here on a Wednesday for dinner with a friend and a reservation and got seated right away! Good: Great portion sizes and affordable pricing! I really liked the chicken enchilada California since it was recommended to me and had a ton in the plate too including grains and lots of sauce and sour cream. Bad: Takes a long time for the food to get to the table and also to flag down waiters. It’s also a bit dirty inside so we had flies coming around and buzzing. Overall a fun vibe and felt authentic! They also have great free chips and salsa!

The atmosphere is traditional and fun. The services was great, but the food was just okay. Happened to be in the area so stopped for lunch. Was excited to see a specific lunch menu with more reasonability priced items and specials. There is complimentary chips and salsa. The salsas were great but the chips were stale and terrible. We settled on the specials. A fish tacos and ship quesadillas. Both were good but lacked flavor and seasoning. The stars of the show were the rice and beans. I would order a side of those and call it a day.
