Updated review: I've bumped the food rating up to that 5th star! We went again about a week ago and had Josh as our server again, definitely one of the best servers I've met at any restaurant, crazy attentive, very funny, and gets all orders 100% accurate. This time we went with friends for a birthday, I shared the El Rico burrito with Steak, and the El Pollo especial. El Rico was really good. The sauce it came with made that burrito even better! El pollo especial was out of this world delicious. I almost ordered a second one, but I had to save room for dessert, and the fried ice cream was even better this time! My friends that ordered the quesadillas with steak were very impressed, but after trying a bite of El Pollo especial from my plate, they wanted to get chicken next time just to try it out. A friend ordered the steak fajitas and had a bit of the same complaints from my first review, and little too much black pepper taste, and the bell peppers felt too firm. For the fajitas, this may be the way they are intended. They were definitely consistent, but again, I prefer the peppers to be a softer texture and not so raw that I can get a crunch. At least not with fajitas. The fresh made salsa that comes to the table was a lot better this time around, and so were the chips it comes with. Overall, my fajita preference is my main complaint again. However, I encourage you to try for yourself as this could absolutely be just preference. The menu has proven to have stellar choices and atmosphere felt even more relaxing at the tables in the back. It was themed differently and and I enjoyed it very much. I hope that you enjoy your next visit here. I'm confident that I'll be returning once or twice a month and definitely requesting josh every time!
Original review: This place was excellent, the service was great, my server was great, and the manager came to the table to greet us and share some history. We are going back Monday to try some items for a friends birthday, I'll update my review to a full five-star after I go Monday after trying some other dishes. I need to try a bit more items this next visit. I went with the steak fajitas, fried ice cream, and for my kiddo a cheese quesadilla with a special request that was accommodated very well! I really have no serious complaints, the food was excellent indeed but I did feel the peppers were a little undercooked (personal preference that they are a bit more soft but that's my only real complaint.) Next time I'm trying the el pollo especial and el rico burrito I believe it was called. Once I return on Monday, I'm confident this restaurant will get that 5th star, I'm very honest with my reviews, though, so I can't do it right away! Check back Monday night for my updated review!! My server was Joshua J, who really nailed the experience, and speaking with Alma at the end was wonderful as well. I'm going with some friends next time but plan to bring the whole family asap! See you Monday, Rio...

If I could give 10 stars, I would. Rio Mirage Café in Surprise, AZ doesn’t just serve food—it delivers a culinary celebration, a tribute to the vibrant soul of Mexican culture. From the moment you sit down, you’re enveloped in an atmosphere that feels both festive and welcoming, as if you’ve been invited into someone’s cherished family gathering.
The plates are not just meals; they’re masterpieces. Every dish that arrived at our table was a visual stunner—bright, bold, and overflowing with flavor. The vibrant yellow and orange cheeses melted perfectly over grilled vegetables and tender meats, crowned with fresh avocado, diced tomato, and green onion—each color singing in harmony like a mariachi band in full chorus.
The portions are generous—truly enough to nourish both body and soul. Whether it’s the perfectly seasoned rice, the hearty refried beans smothered in molten cheese, or the enchiladas and tacos that arrived bursting with robust fillings, this place does not skimp. The variety and abundance invite you to linger and share—ideal for families, friends, or anyone seeking connection through food.
One of the highlights was a grilled zucchini and chicken dish—flawlessly seasoned, smoky, and smothered in cheese, every bite melting into a savory crescendo. The homemade salsa, served in traditional molcajetes, hit that perfect balance between fire and flavor. Even the chips were fresh and crispy, perfect for scooping up every last drop of flavor from the plate.
The menu is expansive, offering something for every palate—from comforting classics to vegetarian-friendly options, all while remaining deeply authentic. It’s rare to see such a combination of culinary skill and cultural homage presented so thoughtfully.
And the people? Kind. Gracious. Attentive. The service matched the food in warmth and attentiveness, making us feel like honored guests, not just patrons.
This is more than dinner—it’s a celebration of Mexican culinary heritage. Rio Mirage Café stands as a beacon of flavor, comfort, and community.
Highly recommend. Bring your appetite and your appreciation for culture, color, and craft....
Read moreAll I can say is very sub-par waitress.... first, she didn't really understand the menu. When we ordered our drinks she didn't seem to know what the Paloma was on their own menu, then didn't ask if my husband wanted tap or bottle for beer and just brought bottle. If we knew they were out of tap (she didn't say either way) he would have ordered something else. Then we waited for our drinks and she came back to get our food order and we still waited for our drinks after that, with no excuse or explanation as to why. Not even a "I'm still waiting on the bar to make them" or anything. Then when we finally got our drinks she spilled the Paloma all over the floor and table, giggled "oh they fill these too full" and walked away. Not even offering to clean up the giant puddle on the table or coming back to do so. My husband asked for some extra napkins, she brought back 2 and dropped them on the floor, then picked them up and put them on our table and walked away. PICKED THEM UP OFF THE FLOOR!!! When we ordered our food, she didn't ask what we wanted for meat and my husband had to stop her to tell her he wanted ground beef for his taco and enchilada and I had to stop her and tell her what I wanted. She seemed like she didn't really know the menu. Then when we got our food, there were issues. My husband got my toppings for the salad on the side of his plate and they were warm. He got a cheese enchilada instead of gr. Beef as he asked. My salad was suppose to have "spicy Shredded beef" and there was no spice to it period. And the dressing that she brought was also warm. I have never been a huge fan of ranch, which the last time I ordered the same salad they didn't even offer a dressing, but I am quite sure that milk based dressings are suppose to be cold. Especially on a cold salad. Really sad that the experience was so poor. I have experience as a waitress and a bartender and honestly I let alot go when I can see someone is new or overwhelmed. However this really did not seem to...
