I am very disappointed and sad that our weekly family dinners at Alebrije have come to an end. After almost three years coming here we had an extremely uncomfortable experience this past Thursday that will sadly prevent us from returning.
We have been loyal weekly costumers for about three years now. They have taco Thursday specials where their tacos are $2. We were mistakenly charged regular price for the tacos and When we asked for a copy of the receipt, we were told it was being corrected so we waited. All of a sudden a lady comes to us with the corrected receipt and asks us of the service was good, to which we answer yes it was. She proceeded to say to is that if the service was good how come we left less than 15% gratuity? We were in shock. I had never been questioned for a gratuity. She said that the waitress there (similar to other places) just make a small amount per hour and that they rely on gratuity. She said that is customary in GA to leave 15%-18% when service is good. I was in shock that after almost three years of coming to this place and ALWAYS leaving tips we were being asked this question. We always leave tips, the days that the service is good and the days that is not so good. I did not understand why she was asking us frequent costumers that question. This particular time we left about 10% tip or a little more for a $25 check and only three people. The lady started raising her voice as we questioned her how much was she wanting us to leave for tip. What is more disappointing is that as the conversation continued and the owner came by and agreed with her and argued about not raising prices, that everything was expensive, that the waitresses made $2.5 or so an hour, etc. As a costumer that is not our business. They need to review their finances and adjust with inflation as needed. It is very bad taste to come to a frequent costumer table after they have enjoyed their family dinner and ask why did we not leave more tip. They have no idea why that specific day we decided to leave that amount of tip. They needed to remember all the other times in three years that we have left more tip. I say more because we always leave tip, always. I still have No idea how did this happened, or why they decided to approach us specifically about this that day. Very bad...
Read moreI usually don't give reviews that are this negative, but it was absolutely the worst mole that I have ever had in my life. Life. It was like eating a melted bar of chocolate with cinnamon poured in it. There was no depth of flavor. The only thing you could taste was sweet chocolate and then a blast of cinnamon. I was so disappointed. We used to live in the southwest and out in the Utah area and I've had some of the greatest moles you could ever hope to eat. We've had pumpkin, almond, chocolate, lots of traditional Oaxacan mole. Our favorite restaurant in Salt Lake was Red Iguana back in the late 1990s and early 2000s before it was ruined by social media. I also had the poblanas crema and again the lack of depth in the flavor is just so apparent. I don't know what is going on with this restaurant. Another really bummer thing that happened is that the waitress who was very nice and helpful had on perfume which got all over the boxes when she was packing up our to go order. So not only was the taste really bad honestly to the point that I threw the food away, but her perfume caused all of my food to smell like perfume. My wife had tacos, al pastor, and she said they were good. And they had a very spicy habanero salsa which was actually hot and pretty good. I would never go back to this restaurant, and I hope that they see this review and really do something about the way they're cooking this food. The potential is there, but I don't know if they thought. Gringos they won't know the difference, but sorry we did and this restaurant is an absolute no-go. If someone reviewed the mole favorably, then they have never had good mole, or it was prepared in a manner that was completely different from what we had. You've been warned. Most times I would have requested a refund, but we do not live in that area and it was more of a hassle than I wanted to deal with because we were super busy. Again. Nice people, but really bad food and I just cannot get over that perfume smell on every single box and in both bags it will so overwhelming. Just a...
Read moreIf I could give more than five stars, I would! Alebrije is hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants I’ve ever visited, and it quickly became a favorite after just one meal. The highlight for me was their blackberry margarita: absolutely out of this world. Perfectly balanced between sweet, tart, and refreshing, it’s one of those drinks you’ll be dreaming about long after you leave.
Even more unforgettable was discovering chiles en nogada here. Only available in September to celebrate Mexican Independent Day, it's a roasted poblano pepper stuffed with ground beef, veal pork & dried fruits, covered with a velvety three-cheese almond sauce & garnished with parsley, pecans & pomegranate seeds, and served with rice & sauteed mezcal mango. It’s not a dish you see every day, and Alebrije’s version is truly phenomenal...rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. It's overstuffed with the meat and fruit mixture and the flavors work so well together I almost cried while eating it. I'm not kidding. We loved this dish so much that we came back twice in a single week just to have it again. That alone should tell you everything about how special it is.
Their tacos are very solid as well, with a variety of meats like cochinita pibil being a slam dunk.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service matches the food – attentive, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. Alebrije isn’t just a meal, it’s an experience that leaves you wanting more. The fun and playful sculptures around the restaurant help to ensure this.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through Duluth, Alebrije is a must-try spot. Order the blackberry margarita, try the chiles en nogada if you read this at the right time of year (available only in September, Thurs-Sat), and...
