This used to be one of my go to sushi places YEARS ago (maybe around 2006 or 2007). And let me say, we do eat sushi quite a bit. My son got gyoza that was not bad. I ordered the salmon avocado roll which was ok but really small and probably not something I'd order again. I also got the crunch eel which also just ok but the best out of the 4 rolls my wife and I ordered. My wife ordered the dynamite roll and the spicy tuna roll. Right off the bat she noticed the tuna was looking way redder than usual and she always gets spicy tuna every time we get sushi. She took a bite and immediately noticed that is tasted fishier than any tuna she's had. I tasted it and it tasted alright at first but the aftertaste had some kind of strong chemical taste to it and the taste stuck in my mouth throughout the whole meal actually kind of causing my stomach to get a little upset. I took a bite of the ginger hoping that would take the taste out of my mouth but it did not. She couldn't even finish her rolls, unfortunately they both had the same tuna on it. She attempted to scrape the tuna of but that did not help. Honestly the worse sushi I've had in a very long time. The workers were nice but I think they were short on staff because it did take a long time to get our food and they now serve everything on Styrofoam plates. I was excited to eat here tonight but unfortunately I'd probably never go back after that experience.

If you like sushi, you need to try Gari Sushi. Don’t let the modest exterior fool you. I was also suspicious the first time I came here. It is some of the best sushi and Japanese comfort food around. The Tsunami Salmon is an absolute must-try. I have had it more than 20 times. The flavors are fresh and delicious. Their udon is perfectly rich and comforting, and the seaweed salad is one of the best. Every dish is made with so much care, and you can taste the difference. What really makes Gari Sushi special, though, is the people. The owner and his sister run the place almost entirely on their own, and their dedication is unmatched. They treat every customer like family, making each visit feel personal and welcoming. This place deserves way more attention. If you’re in the area, don’t hesitate—Gari Sushi is a hidden gem that’s worth discovering. Once you try it, you’ll keep coming back. That's certainly what happened to me.

Sushi lovers rejoice!! You have to try Gari of Sushi at least once in your life. This place is the absolute best in Tacoma for all things sushi! The owner has won numerous awards throughout his life and has been featured on The News Tribune many times. I've tried many sushi places and, while some are very good, this is THE spot for the very best!! Yes the outside of the building looks antiquated, however, stepping inside, there is a much nicer ambiance with numerous booths and a sitting bar in front of the owner while he prepares his masterpieces. I've tried nearly all the rolls on the menu and everything is delicious. Honestly you can't go wrong choosing anything. Make the time and go to Gari of Sushi on 38th street in Tacoma and you have no regrets!

I want to give this place another chance. I've heard great things about it, but when my friends and I went, 4 of us, and we made reservations, on a tuesday...it was pretty dissapointing. The waitress sort of, left while we were ordering. Only one of us had ordered, and then she just walked away. We probably looked at her for 5 minutes, none of us wanting to be rude, but we were kind of confused. She didn't even really go do anything. She didn't leave to assist another customer. I kind of wondered to myself if she was a little, out of it? I'm not sure, lol. But eventually we all got to order. When the food came out, she just kind of out it all together, which was okay. We were left to decipher what was what. Also, she brought 2 plates for 4 people. We had to ask for more plates, you know...so 2 of us didn't have to eat off a platter and drip on the table. It was odd. The food was very lackluster. I didnt want to hurt my friends feelings, but it was my least favorite sushi I've ever had in tacoma. But hey! I wanna give it another try. I wanna go, sit at the bar, order straight from the chef, bypass the bizarre waitress, and have a couple beers with just 1 friend. Maybe 4 people with a reservation was too much to accommodate? I'll give it another try, then update my review ;) here's...

The food sushi at this place is legit amazing. It's the real deal, and if you're in Tacoma, want great sushi, you should totally go.

But here's what happened to me. I just wanted a light dinner, a one single roll (the Geshi roll—so good), a salad, and some miso. Communication with waitstaff isn't always solid so I pointed to the roll I wantedT. he waitress said the name of a different, way more expensive roll which I said no too and reiterated just the the one Geshi roll.

When the food came, she brought out my Geshi roll... (again, really good) and the roll I didn't order. I tried to talk to her about this but she just pointed at her notepad showing that she wrote down two rolls so that what my order was. Like I said, communication ont the best, it was super awkward and I didn't have time to argue.

So I ended up paying double what I wanted for dinner because of this. I was too full so I left it left it untouched. It was too hot a day to have raw fish sitting in my car for hours.

It's a bummer because the food itself is a solid 10/10. But the experience was such gut punch and awkward that I won't be going back, which sucks. It's great food, just triple-check your order before...
