Tampa, Florida has a thriving craft beer scene and if you have even the slightest interest in beer, you are obliged to visit at least one brewery when you’re in the area. If you happen to have someone with you who prefers wine, there is an establishment that will satisfy you both, and it is called Southern Brewery and Winemaking.
Beer is the main reason people visit Southern Brewery and Winemaking and there is no shortage of beer to be tasted. I counted about 30 beers on tap when I was there and I like that they are arranged by flavor rather than by style. The beers available are indicated on a chalkboard behind the bar and rather than sort them by IPA, Stouts, Porters, Wheat, etc, they are arranged by flavors like Malty, Hoppy, Sour, etc. This is a good idea because, while some people may be unsure exactly what style of beer they prefer, most everyone knows what flavor of beer they like.
Beer might be the main focus at Southern Brewery and Winemaking but it is far from the only focus. They also serve about 10 or so wines and ciders and, of course, there is a large section of the building dedicated to winemaking and brewing equipment. This makes Southern Brewery and Winemaking one of the very few brewery and winery establishments I have ever visited that doubles as a wine and beer making supply store.
Southern Brewery and Winemaking has a good deal of space for guests and I really like the outdoor patio. It has fountains, fire pit, cornhole games, lawn chairs, and picnic tables. I would love to sit out here next to the warm fire on a crispy night with a beer in my hand. The outdoor space has much to offer and it helps distinguish this establishment from the dozens of other breweries in the Tampa area.
Tampa has made a name for itself as an all- American craft beer city and Southern Brewery and Winemaking is one of its more interesting. With beer and wine on tap and with all the equipment you could ever need to make beer or wine at home, Southern Brewery and Winemaking is one- of- a- kind and a good choice of establishments to add to your list of Tampa...
Read moreSouthern has well earned its status as a pillar of the local Seminole Heights community. Serving not only as a beer and wine maker’s supply shop, and brewery, the grounds serve as a neighborhood gathering spot – playing host to events, chief most being the Seminole Heights Market during the summer months. It has a welcoming atmosphere and the employees (whether slinging beer or helping you make your own) are always happy to assist.
The establishment is both dog and kid friendly, and they play host to a local food truck several times a week. It’s comfortable – the kind of place that the locals depend on to unwind without having to deal with the bustle of some of the more trendy joints in the area.
The drink – while not as celebrated or well known as other served in the area – is quite good, and there taps rotate quickly, offering regulars something new with almost ever visit. There are, of course, standards as well. Inglorious Hefeweizen is mild and sweet (great for the Florida summers), and Raised Bungalow (flavored as requested with raspberry, peanut butter, or any other variety of elixirs) is a local favorite with no real comparison to other breweries’ offerings.
If you can’t tell, I heartily recommend anyone to check it out. The atmosphere is humble, yet warm. You won’t find any unnecessary trappings on the walls, or uncomfortable furniture. It’s a local joint that I’m more than happy lives just...
Read moreMICHELLE, my belle! Visiting from Boston for the weekend we tried our time in Clearwater. On the last night of the trip we posted up in Tampa to catch our early flight the next morning. Little did we know the end of our visit would be the highlight. After tourist traps and large glasses filled with watered down margaritas we arrived at Southern Brewing on a chance… we grabbed excellent authentic Mexican food from the food truck of the night, and then made our way inside. I wish we had caught the first bartenders name, but we spent most of our night with Michelle and the local crowd. Accommodating, welcoming, knowledgeable, affable… the list goes on. We felt welcomed and satiated. The drinks are delicious, the company appealing, and the experience felt natural. I honestly believe when we come back to Florida we will make our way back here before hitting any beach. And after. And probably again before we leave! Thank you, Michelle! A pleasure we...
