Super strange experience at Taylor’s kitchen. Like most others, we arrived straight off a plane from DTW to visit our Michigan local friends. There was a group of six of us and someone kindly moved to let us have the table booth.
After that things got weird. First of all, I walked to the back of the restaurant right away to use the restroom. As I was walking there, a white lady in the kitchen, behind a glass partition, started waving at me saying hi, hello, hi, how are you, frantically. I finally realized she was saying hi to me and said hi back, confused. Then I went to the bathroom. When I exited, I was walking back to my table, the same white lady aggressively made eye contact and asked, are you dining with us today??? Well yes… I’m here aren’t I? I’m not allowed to wash my hands before ordering??
You’re probably like, that sounds friendly and innocent. But as a Black woman, we know when things feel off being approached with such “friendly” scrutiny. It was like she was questioning my right to be there
I sat with my friends and we ordered. The food came out a little while later. It was uneventful. It was also very bland. I’m not sure there was a pinch of salt or pepper on anything. My friend’s nachos were the driest combination of ground beef, tortilla chips and cheese we’d ever seen, if you can imagine that. But we were eating until my friend’s husband said quietly, there’s a staple in my omelet.
We all looked up, alarmed. Sure enough, right there on the plate, there was a perfect used staple. It was used, so it looked like it had been used to staple two papers together. We all stared in horror at the evidence on his plate. One of my friends said that he had to say something.
There were six people at the table. We all saw this. It wasn’t imagined. However, we were all so surprised that none of us had the good sense to take a picture.
The waitress came by to casually check on us. She was carrying a pot of coffee. None of us had ordered coffee so obviously that coffee was for other patrons as she made her rounds. When she came over with her pot of coffee, my friend’s husband quietly let her know about the staple. She took one look at his plate, immediately put the hot coffee pot directly on the table beside us, said “Let me take care of that” and wisked the plate away before we could think another thought.
We all nibbled at our food. We waited. The coffee pot stayed where it was, cooling down and burning the table. It stayed there for over 10 minutes. Nobody around us got a coffee refill.
The waitress never came back.
My friend’s husband ate his pancake because that was all the food he had left after she took away the contaminated omelet.
When the waitress did come back, she came back with the check. She said, well I don’t know how that got the omelet. That object isn’t anything we have in our restaurant. Well, I took the omelet off but I charged you for the pancake.
The pancake was a side to the omelet.
The pancake was the only thing my friend’s husband had to eat as the waitress did not return to offer him another omelet or another breakfast option. She only came back with the check.
Obviously, we should have not been charged for the pancake.
Oh and guess what? The check was hand written on a piece of paper and stapled to the original order. So there are used staples in the restaurant.
Look, we asked for nothing. We paid and made no fuss. But what we were owed was an apology and at least an attempt to make this right.
Might I add that my friends are not Black, but they were not white either.
At best, Taylor’s Kitchen is sloppy and has poor customer service. At worst, they are racist.

Read moreAs of this writing, Taylor's Kitchen has the highest google rating for breakfast in this area (4.7/5). This was my first visit and I think this is why. First, it's clean. Everything in there looks new or very well maintained. Second, the service. Besides the obvious stuff like friendly greeting, efficient and accurate order taking, and refill management, there's also subtle things. When my wife went to pay she was given the cash and credit totals and didn't have to do math. That impressed her a lot. (Please note, I never blame the local business for a credit card charge. Small business doesn't get good rates on these services. I think of it more like a cash discount.) Third, the decor. It's unique and tasteful without feeling derivative or cluttered. The simple aesthetic reenforces the cleanliness from point one. Fourth the food. It was flawless. The toast was toasted exactly the right amount. The soft drinks were perfectly mixed and had the exact ratio of ice, even after 2 partial refills. Coffee was hot and constantly topped off. The potatoes and omelettes could have come out of a television commercial. There was nothing particularly original or clever about the food, it was just what we ordered and it was hot, fast, it tasted fresh and didn't seem to have overprocessed ingredients. I also want to add that the 4.7/5 rating, while outstanding, is actually lower than it should be. There's a small number of reviews and some of the complaints are that the restaurant was not open when the reviewer wanted it to be or the staff was too busy to take a phone order during peak dining hours. I don't see either of these things as a problem. Limited hours means there's no 2nd shift to cause problems and ignoring the phone for the paying customers in the building waiting on their food when operating at capacity is the way...
Read moreJust left this little gem of a place. Woke up hungry and way to busy to make breakfast this morning. Did a near by breakfast restaurant search and found this place. They only take cash so i had to go to the ATM passing other restaurants along they way. But decided to give them a chance and returned for the experience. I'm a adventurous type of person. SO GLAD I DID! Wonderful people, quiet atmosphere, neighborly feel and conversation, healthy food choices. AND MY WAITRESS ROBIN.. WHAT A ANGEL. Wonderful personality and understand my eating preferences. Also went as far as to give me her personal green tea bag. I don't drink coffee or dark tea. The grill chicken greek omelette with fetta cheese was simply amazing. THEN she suggested some desert. This lady is a pie master. I ordered a slice called "The Amazing" to go.. I've eaten half of it and stopped to write this review. If I didn't I wouldn't have any pictures to share..Lol 😅. I highly recommend this place. It looks small on the outside.. but very spacious on the inside. Will be returning to enjoy this place and experience.👍☆☆☆☆☆ and more of Robins pie! She makes over 21 different pies! That's awesome..lol. I'm a healthy active person.. but i do believe in treating oneself every now and...
