Joe's Italian Ice — Restaurant in Tempe

I am not a Tempe native and never had experienced Joes Italian ice before June 2025. My daughter and I drove past it a few times and I suggested we stop by to get some Italian ice. The store was packed , I seen smiling happy faces and was happy to spend my money . My first order was a regular strawberry and lemon and I loved it so much, we were pleased with our orders . We were so pleased we came back the next day and again the day after . We were given a punch card the second time we came back and within that short period of time , we had already punched the card 7 times by the time July had come . We decided to go back the first week of July , we placed an order for blood orange and lemon and strawberry and lemon . We were headed out of town when we stopped for our ice. After receiving them , getting on the highway and continuing to eat our ice , I noticed that there was a different type of flavor I was tasting . I didn’t know what it was at first but tasted again but hurried to spit it out as it tasted like coconut which I am allergic too . My daughter tasted hers and it was the same thing in the bottom of her cup. I was shocked and we called the store and immediately explained what had happened . HAZEL spoke with us asking the issue which was explained along with the fact that we were headed out of town and far from the store to turn around and come back . At no point did HAZEL explain any policy about when we had to return , in fact I asked if it would be a problem because we knew we couldn’t come right back and how will they know to replace the order and she stated she was leaving a note with our names and what happened . She also stated it was a mistake because coconut was next to the lemon . Which is it of the customers control . We genuinely expressed that we love the ice but wanted the flavors corrected because neither one of us could enjoy the order because the whole order was wrong as my daughter was given cherry and sugar free or light coconut and I was given blood orange and sugar free or light coconut . We came back from out of town and stopped by to replace the ice we were told that we could replace , to be told there wasn’t a note left by HAZEL and that she has done other things and that she has been off the schedule for others reasons . We were told that they will check with the owner because you are supposed to come back the same day for replacement , which I stated above we called same day and was given misinformation. The manager comes back to the drive thru and says that the owner says it can’t be replaced . This isn’t about the money , it’s the principle , not only did my money go to waste , but we were lied too also . I don’t appreciate my time being wasted or my money for a mistake that a store employee made . I told everyone how much I loved Joes but because of this experience unfortunately I will never go back . I could have ended up in the hospital or worse due to an allergic reaction and I couldn’t even get my ice replaced . I have a receipt , I even have when I called it shows the time and date . So disappointed! I know people try to get over on businesses all the time and we are not those people . So I came here w my in laws a month ago, and then also my husband and I came here last night. As a disclaimer I'm from az and haven't ever had Italian ice "back east" so I can't really speak to the authenticity of this place but I can say it was gooood. So my husband and I usually both order different things and share them when we get food, and in may we ended up getting a soft serve dole whip and a fruity pebbles Italian ice. The dole whip was good, it has been a few years since I've had official dole whip so i can't compare super well, I think I would say the Joe's was a little less creamy and more pineapply in flavor, but I love pineapple so no complaints here. At first I kinda didn't like the fruity pebbles ice, but it really grew on me. It basically tasted like the milk after you eat all the fruity pebbles, and it did have fruity pebbles in it as well (as might be expected, they were a little soggy which is why I was initially unsure, but after I started eating it they didn't bother me). My husband actually went back and ordered a large Joe latti of the fruity pebbles bc we loved it so much. As for the inside, I will say when we went it was busy and the line did take a while, but I understood as every employee had to take the order, then make it and finish cashing out/hand it out (not like anyone was standing around or anything, so I really didn't mind the wait). Also, the inside is decked out with kinds of vintage stuff; signs and stop lights and old phones and stuff like that, so there was a lot to look at while we waited. Last night when we drove up, it looked busy inside, so we decided to just go through the drive thru. It def seemed faster than last time, when we were inside (but the were v different times of day so it's hard to compare). They didn't have the fruity pebbles ice this time, so I got a Joe latti with cookies and cream, and my husband got one w peanut butter cup. And, seriously, next time I might just get the vanilla soft serve bc it is soooooo good. Super creamy and smooth, I feel like it melts at the perfect rate. I'm not usually a vanilla by itself kinda person but this stuff is incredible. The cookies and cream ice was good, but the soft serve was the best part imo. I also trued my husband's, and it was just a little too peanuty for my taste, but that's really just personal preference. I would definitely recommend this place as an interesting place to stop and sit down for desert or run through...

I usually go to Joes when I’m craving something cold and sweet with no hesitation because of the amazing Italian ice I love so much! But this time around was very disappointing… I do recommend giving night crew an extra person to help when they get busy … now usually I don’t have any complaints whatsoever not even the two other times I got the wrong order but this time around was different. My go to flavor is Bada Bing Cherry! Not only is it my favorite color but I love the sweet and tartness that is accompanied with it and I usually will try different flavors with it to see what pairs well with my favorite flavor. Last night a little after 10 pm I was craving it so bad but wanted to try it with Sour Poison Apple and was super excited. My order I told the lady with Caramel brown hair in the drive thru was “Hi, Can I get a Large Bada Bing Cherry (mind you I said this flavor first cause it is my favorite) with Sour Poison Apple? Babe what did you want again?” He then said “Can I get a Small Chocolate Vanilla Soft Serve?” She said yes, gave us the pad to pay and walked away to get our order. When she came back I did ask “Is that my order?” Because I saw it was a Joe Latti … mind you I asked for no such thing … My boyfriends order was correct though and I just decided to go with it and check for myself because like I said previously I have had my order messed up two times before in the past but this was a complete mess up. I decided to check my order on the way home while my man drove us home cause it was late and I am pregnant and when we got home I gave him the vanilla that was at the top because it tasted horrible with The Sour Poison Apple and then proceeded to look for the Bada Bing Cherry … it was no where in sight and I ended up finding more vanilla soft serve mixed in with my Sour Poison Apple … I was super upset and even more upset that my boyfriends order was perfect while mine didn’t have the main and first thing I asked for … I won’t be going back at night again unless we go inside and if it’s not her … it was rude and not fair tbh … I still have more than half sitting in my freezer due to this...
