A group from work met at Philly’s located at 1402 South Priest Drive in Tempe in the late afternoon on a weekday. The staff was all very nice and accommodated our group by arranging several tables together. This is a sports bar, and has several televisions lining the walls, each showing various sporting events. We ordered beverages and appetizers while we waited for more people to arrive. The appetizers arrived pretty quickly and were fresh and delicious, although not particularly healthy. With that being said, one does not order bar food expecting to eat healthy. After a while, we ordered meals. Some in our group ordered chicken wings prepared different ways, some ordered pizza and others ordered sandwiches. Some in our group ordered food to go as well. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and no complaints were spoken. My boss paid for everything, so I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to the pricing of the food (thanks boss). The service was good, our server was friendly and the food was fresh and arrived in a reasonable amount of time. For the most part, our visit to Philly’s was a positive experience. My only two complaints are that the paper towel roll in the restroom was empty and one person in our group was unquestionably overserved alcohol. I know that this is a touchy subject, and the staff would have no way of knowing that this person had already started drinking prior to arriving, but they should have known that the beer they were serving had a high alcohol concentration on top of being served in 24 ounce mugs. We took care of our own people, and this person made it home safe, but I would strongly encourage Philly’s to do a better job of monitoring how much alcohol they are serving their patrons, especially when the beer has a high...
Read moreI came with my children to watch an Eagles Game on Sunday with a group of Eagles Fans. Its a challenge trying to parent and be in tune with your favorite team at the same time so I did my best to try to go back and forth between the area my two girls were playing in and the bar seating area that the group was sitting in. I don't feel the staff has experience working around children because they kept coming to me with complaints about my daughters running around while serving. I did understand the safety concerns and why they had to have the talk with me but I did feel singled out because there were other children in the bar doing the same thing. The intent in our visit along with the eagles group was to find a home based bar that our social group could bring patrons on a weekly basis. We came as a group of admins with the potential of getting 30 to 50 people dedicated to patronizing the business weekly for eagles games.
Unfortunately with the way that staff handled me, this will not be that location. I do not fault the staff workers for doing their job to inform the parents to monitor their children. But I was told things like...
"Sir they weren't keeping their butts in seats and they were spilling the water"
"Sir they are running around too much"
Not sure how many of the staff has children but that's kinda what they do. I truly don't think they were terrorizing the place to the extent it which I was made to feel that they were and as I mentioned earlier, I definitely felt like I was the only parent targeted in the establishment. There's two sides to every story and I definitely had a talk with my girls while at the establishment about behavior. I just don't feel this place is very welcoming to...
Read moreChildish environment. Place wasn't even that busy and my server was almost nowhere to be found. When I asked another server to take a simple drink order from me she said "do you know who your server is? Maybe she can do it?". I told her "she's off doing God knows what, maybe you can take it?". Because that's what servers do They help each other out. So she did. THEN our original server somehow found the time to come up to our table to tell us "how offended" she was that she heard we said she was "off doing God knows what". None of us meant this as an offense. We simply said it as a result of the careless service. It is what is its. We wanted to place a drink order. That's it. It's amazing how she didn't have time to take a simple drink order, but she had plenty of time to tell us how offended she was. We just wanted to place a drink order, but she made it a point to put us in our place because "she's working and busy" even though I never saw her hardly working at all. So we told her that being a server means multitasking (and this is coming from people that have spent 5+ years in the service industry, most being high end ant watching it all go downhill) and she told us "if you want faster service, move to the bar".. so we told her, "yeah we will move to the bar so that we won't offend you for not doing your job". We took this to the manager, and the manager told us that we made her cry by saying what we said. Yep, that's right. The server here cried crocodile tears and got pity points from her boss because she couldn't handle her own job of just taking simple drink orders. Not gonna be subjected to needless high school drama because of fragility. Won't be back...
