Social Hall Restaurant + Event Venue — Restaurant in Tempe

Went here for Valentine’s Day as had been tradition for my girlfriend and I. It’s been a really tough year and we were looking forward to getting out of the house and enjoying a night together.

Firstly, we get there almost 2hrs before close, and the place is close to dead. We get told we still have to wait 30 minutes to be sat, so fine. We make our way to the arcade area, and every game is broken except for the golf cabinet. We go outside to play some of the games out there instead, and on cue we’re called back in to be seated. The hostess brings us water, and it’s another 15-20 until our server comes by. It’s 1hr before close at this point. We put in our appetizer and drink orders, trying to enjoy the place. Last year we happily played cornhole in the rain waiting for our food. Instead this year, the staff were so busy trying to close early that we weren’t brought our food on time nor able to actually enjoy the place.

So how was the food? Not only did someone have to remind our server that our food was ready because she was too busy closing the place around us, but it came out room temperature to boot. I was super excited for it, and yet it also disappointed. We both got variants of the Mac and cheese, and both of ours featured soggy and separated sauces with dry meats. After both of us pretending to like it for each other, we decided that sitting by the fireplace outside would lift our spirits. As we are WALKING TO THE FIREPLACE, where there’s nothing else we COULD be doing, an employee cuts us off and starts collecting the cushions off the seats. Dumbfounded my girlfriend and I double take, make contact with the employee who just scurries off with the cushions before turning off the fireplace. It’s still 30 minutes before close. At this point, my girl bursts into tears asking me if we can just leave. The employees are so busy turning off any semblance of a welcoming environment they don’t notice me trying to flag them down for the check so we can go home.

Having worked in the food industry, I have never closed a restaurant while customers are still in it. Even up to one minute before close we would welcome in new customers and remind them that we are closing but would love to get them food still. What happened was an abhorrent waste of $60 for two sodas, ruined Mac and cheese, and chips. Came for a friends birthday a few weeks back and did not have the best experience. Upon arriving, we found the table set up to be weird. Staff explained that due to COVID, parties with a certain amount of people had to be split up. Okay no big deal, they said it could be changed as we were less people than we originally thought. We have to move the tables ourselves? Alright, we just want to have a nice time celebrating our friends birthday. The courtyard was fairly full when four of the ten people arrived promptly at 11, the time of the reservation. My boyfriend and I stood at the hostess stand as a line began to form while Mike who was rushing to prepare drinks behind the bar informed us it would be just a moment. I then waited another ten minutes before being told that my party was going to be at the two tables outside, not being walked over to the area. The rest of the party arrived at 11:15 and we then preceded to wait 45 minutes for drink orders to arrive. Managements response to my friends review grossly misrepresented the situation and disappointed all that were in my party with their lack of professionalism. My friend jokingly picked up a mini bottle of rosé that she had gotten as part of a gift due to the fact that she had been waiting so long when Mike rushes over to tell her to put it away. We were just trying to keep things light and joke around as we waited an obscene amount of time for service and she promptly it down without having had taken a sip. edit- the bottle in question was not being chugged from as the owner claims. We understand that it was an in appropriate joke, but don’t appreciate the dishonestly from the owner surrounding the situation. My boyfriend and I really wanted to come back and try the place out again and would have if it weren’t for the owners attitude. The fact of the matter is the restaurant was understaffed with two people running around for an entire restaurant on Super Bowl Sunday and while when we arrived the restaurant was full, it cleared out with the party from the extra table we did not use moving around to another table as they pleased. Despite many parties finishing and leaving, the service did not improve much and the food was mediocre at best. We chose to have our wedding reception in Social Halls Rafter Room this past Halloween. The rate of a food and beverage minimum instead of a rental fee plus catering gave us a lot of advantages. We had a smaller wedding so the Rafter Room was the perfect size. The speakeasy vibes were a perfect match for us and flowed very well from our ceremony at the DBG. I cant wait to see the photos! Coordinating was a breeze and Ashley was immensely helpful during the whole process.

As mentioned it's a food and beverage minimum instead of a rental fee, so to feed my smaller party we we're able to spoil them with an upgraded bar package. The food was well worth it entirely on its own, it was leagues beyond anything we could have catered at more than twice what we paid with Social Hall. The food brought endless compliments, particularly the Brussel sprouts! The food alone was worth the cost. Small detail as well, since this is a restaurant and not a reception venue we were able to package up left overs and take them with us instead of them being thrown out. When you're paying a lot for good food, it's nice to know we could still enjoy it after.

We opted for an upgraded premium bar package with bride and groom signature Cocktails instead of champagne and it worked out very nicely. Everyone was able to get what they would like to drink. The Cocktails were delicious and the bartender was on top of everyone's refills without skipping a beat.

If you're getting married in the Phoenix area I cannot recommend Social Hall enough for your reception, it has an unmatched vibe that feels far more organic and warm than a reception hall, and the food and drinks will put most catering...
