I waited for the newness to subside and I finally went. It was easy to find if your familiar with the area but there is no signage on the actual building like the other businesses it might be due to newness. It is next to Genos. This is not a sit down eatary, its s pick up and go. There is call in available but order will not be made until its paid for. It took about 20 min for small fish dinner and 8 pc wing dinner to be served. Pop is in a can it was not included with the meal. There are no additional flavors like bbq, hot, mild, etc, etc. A meal includes meat, fries, 2oz cup of slaw and a piece of bread at the bottom of the container. A 2oz side of mild sauce is 50c. The chicken was cooked throughout, but there was no flavor pop as i would have expected. The mild sauce is not flavorful at all. I don't see the excitement for it, in my opinion hot sauce and bbq sauce would be perfect substitutes. The fries were regular bar fries, ask them to be cooked a bit longer if you want crispy fries. They do not come salted. The fish was amazing. Im not sure if the seasonings are the same as the chicken but minus the cornmeal it would be great for the chicken. It had flavor and a bit of bite and was meaty. Same fries and bread at bottom of container and 2oz slaw. The slaw is same as fast food places. Server was not sure what the name of the hot sauce. The facility has a bathroom which is clean. Overall good experience.
This is a new review, i went a second time about a week ago I ordered fish combo as well as the chicken combo and they now have a variety of desserts for 5.00.each. Lemon cake, peach cobbler, banana pudding, and one I don't remember the name to (sorry) Nice portion. I still am not over the bread on the bottom, I have to remember to have them put it on top or not include it at all. I get why its there but I just cannot, it bugs me too much. Lol. I did not get the sauce on the wings this time and it makes a difference. I noticed there were feathers still on them, I will definitely make sure I let them know I dont want feathers next time. It might have been just the batch that was used because it was on all of them not just one or two. The fish is great, I recommend it. Only thing is the bread thing again lol.
I will go back I know in the future just not sure when and I will be sure to update...
Read moreI was very disappointed with me driving ALL the way from Phoenix to Tempe to spend pretty much $50.00 dollars on a pan of 25 wings (that were evidently not brined because the chicken was dry and overcooked and NOT seasoned at all) fries that tasted like they had been sitting there and they re-dropped them in the grease, a 3 piece catfish that tasted like chicken because they fried the fish in the chicken grease and then $5.00 dollars for a container of sauce that wasn't even half way full!!! When I entered the facility there was 3 women and a guy that were at the counter and they were talking amongst themselves but once I made it to the counter to place my order there was no interaction with the customer, they were still having a conversation amongst themselves as I am trying to place my order, and then once I asked the young lady to put mild sauce on the chicken she then informed me that they charge you to put sauce on the chicken, now I understand having to pay for extra sauce on the chicken or to pay for the sauce in the container but to pay for sauce on the chicken is ridiculous 😠😠 that's NOT Chicago!!!! A young man walks in to place an order and he was told the same thing about charging to put the sauce on the chicken, the gentleman and myself asked the cashier was she from Chicago and she said NO!! Anybody that is from Chicago knows this!! I have even gone to shark's and purchased a pan of chicken and they give you a container of sauce for free (mild sauce and hot sauce) and the sauce that you guys are using for the chicken taste just like the mild sauce that you purchase from SHARK'S and NOT Harold's Chicken!! I could have purchased a gallon of mild sauce from on 71st and state street at the candy store for $5.00 dollars and they charged me $5.00 dollars for a container of sauce that wasn't even full!!!! I was dissatisfied and disappointed and wasted my time and money and gas, I could have just went to Popeyes and gotten the Tuesday special or even the family package of chicken with sides and ALL and brought some sweet tea and still had some change left over!! I'm ONLY giving it one star because you have to put a star up here in order to leave the review but it wasn't even worth...
Read moreThis place was reviewed in the newspaper so while it was over 20 miles from my house we decided to check it out. We eat out often and rarely find places that are more than average. We are always looking for that hidden gem. My wife and I are both from Chicago. After reading the news review about this shrimp and chicken shack we began to imagine the shrimp shacks we knew and frequently visited as young adults. Our pallets anticipated a certain response. Of course, nothing is what it once was and it is impossible to visit the past. This restaurant is located near ASU in a small strip along University Ave. It's easy to miss. There is parking and easy access. The first thing you notice is the state of the glass door and windows. Made me want to grab the Windex and a rag. Undetoured we stepped inside to find a bare bones operation with a counter in front of the kitchen and another counter with five stools in case you prefer to dine in. Don't bring a large crowd, it's not that kind of a place. We ordered a shrimp plate and a chicken plate. They only serve chicken wings. The food was well prepared and served wrapped in a brown paper bag. Order any sauce on the side unless you want it all over the fries that come with your plate. You also get a tiny serving of green coleslaw. Of course we were disappointed. While the food was good,it did not match our expectations. The sauce was terrible. We tried both offerings. Other distractions were that you could not get a glass of water without buying bottled. They also did not have ketchup. These are two giant ommisions in my opinion. Who serves 🍟 without ketchup? To be fair, I can see how you could like this place if you did not have prior experience with real Chicago shrimp shacks. My advice to the owners is to offer water from the tap because it is a courtesy, provide ketchup, find a better sauce for your shrimp and clean the front of your store. Will we eat at the Chicago Chicken Shack again?...
