I've tried a wide variety of Indian food, so I know what to expect when it comes to flavor, however, this was my first time trying Sri Lankan food.
Let me tell you about my experience. Upon driving up on a Saturday evening, there were only 2 vehicles parked in the lot. I immediately thought, okay with a 4.8 star rating on Google that is a bad sign. I was a bit hesitant about coming inside, however, my sister persuaded us to just give them a try.
We walk inside the rather large restaurant to find one single family out of the whole establishment and a tall guy aimlessly standing around. It was very strange. We walked to the counter to order only an appetizer, however, the tall guy who did not introduce his name or anything handed us the menu.
So, we sit down at one of the booths as we are scanning the menu, the tall guy comes to the table asking if we ever tried Indian food. I'm thinking to myself, "of course, I live in Houston and has tried Indian food, do I look uncultured?!". I tell him yes and ask for some time to review the menu.
After he leaves, I immediately knew I wanted the veg biryani as an entree. My sister was eyeing the dosa. So we flag the tall guy down and I'm requesting to order the biryani and he tells me, they don't have dosa, biryani, nor any of the Indian dishes because the cook that prepares the Indian isn't at work today. Very strange red flag.
Okay, so I settle on the dahl and veg rotti with hot tea. As soon as I order, it was less than 1 second after I placed the order. I watched the tall guy walk to the kitchen and say something to the cook and he is placing my order on a tray to serve to me.
Another red flag! I'm thinking, "there is no way that they cooked that food that fast." The dahl comes to the table in a small bowl and the portion size was tiny like for a child. The dahl wasn't hot in temperature and more room temperature. The veg rotti was only two pieces that were cut with a side order of ketchup. My sister and I both say to each other, "why is the side sauce ketchup?" I'm thinking, "that would appear more Americanized than Sri Lankan. I don't know". It was very weird and not authentic.
The taste of the dahl was okay, not spicy. It tasted like it came from the canned dahl that I get from Amy's Soups. It definitely did not taste like it was made to order or fresh. It gave a weird aftertaste. The veg rotti was okay. I've had better frozen veg rottis that I've picked up from Raj's Groceries. It wasn't flavorful and more bland. I hated that the dipping sauce was ketchup.
My sister orders the cafe special kottu with veg croquettes. Again, it was 30 seconds and the food was out. The croquettes came with the dipping sauce of ketchup. The croquettes were seemingly tasty. My sister said that the kottu did not taste fresh and gave off a slate taste.
The hot tea was complimentary which the tall guy brought to the table. My sister ordered a mango lassi which they were out of. The tall guy brought us two bottles of water which was in the house. It was strange because we never asked for water
The tea did not taste authentic and tasted like your average ginger tea. It was not aromatic or fresh. It tasted like it had been sitting out all day.
The dahl with a side of rice, veg rotti, and tea was $14. I don't know why they charged me for the tea since the tall guy said that it was complimentary.
Overall, this has been my first time to try this restaurant and my last time. The food is not fresh and not made fresh to order. There was a lack of flavor. The service was attentive, however, the food was not good. 1 star is for the service and 1 star for the food. I won't be back nor recommend this place.
I would really recommend that they have photos of the food. The tall guy gave a good description of the food. Also, the portion size is too small for the price. Please prepare the food fresh to order if I wanted leftovers, I would have...
