Although looks can be deceiving... Monday October 23 , 2023 a friend and I walked into her restaurant after being told by the hope center we could receive a meal . Her sign hours stated 11-2 pm. We were down & out with zero $ and hadn't eaten in 2 days ... we didn't understand how it worked at her restaurant, so we thought her hours ended at 2pm . Only to be completely embarrassed after ordering & when she rang up our meals , we were even more embarrassed to express we had no $ . Well this so called God fearing women looked us both up & down , and yes we had very nice clothes on that were donated to us so we could apply for work. However she very loudedly told us we were wrong and after judging us based on our appearance begrudgingly said well I can't waste it so go ahead , but sit in the back as though we were not " good enough " to eat with the rest of the not so less fortunate. This completely humiliated us as we were already feeling very poorly regarding the current circumstances we were facing . She treated us as though we were trying to " get over"! This isn't a person who is genuinely interested in helping. The scrapes she decides to give the less fortunate as I witnessed leaving her place are that ...scrapes ! I'm sure she gets a deductible for giving . 🙄. As far as I'm concerned a Jesus loving person would never subject down on there luck folks in this manner. So personally I'd like to say thank you for allowing my friend and I to eat that day , unapologetically I say check your motivation Mrs. Shirley and never judge or embarrass people in that manner . Jesus certainly would...

$42 for three meals and an unpacked banana pudding (all take home).

The portions were very conservative, with a small spatula. The cream corn, while good, consisted of only four bites using the plastic spoon/fork provided.

The corn bread was tasty, but dry and crumbled when touched. Biscuit was dry, a bit over cooked (burnt on top).

The Mac/cheese tasted as if bacon grease were poured on top, attributing to the burnt look.

The fried chicken breast tasty and dry. The shredded barbecue turkey was also dry.

The Thanksgiving dressing tasted as if cooked from a box, rather than homemade. Far from what my Southern Ma and Grandma made.

We ordered and paid for the banana pudding; but, it was not packed.

The over all cost exceed expectations when considering the quality and quantity. This was not The Restaurant at the downtown Atlanta Ritz.

What I keep in mind is the ministry she brings to the community. That is priceless. This, my $42 donation plus a $5 tip for the take home order, is, in my opinion, justification.

Keep up the...

They said come at 2 if homeless and hungry this woman humiliates people in need before she help. In front of a full house. They already embarrassed they have to ask but u gonna yell infront of everyone You: if you homeless, I ain’t nothing for ya if you ain’t homeless Them:heads down faces red yes mama we are You: aging! “Well you better be homeless I guess go to the back Them: heads down face red walks to the back just to run out the back door bc you humiliated them in from of all kinda people! I’m gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and hope you don’t realize what you’re doing by acting like that but ma’am you are humiliating these people in need before you help them. So just think about that. I see all them nice things being said.. idk but that was horrible! Being nice and kind with your words is doing Gods work too! Why tell them to come if that how you treat them when they get there? Are you just doing it to look good for the people that don’t need help? Or are you doing it bc you truly...

I first heard about Shirley's on Alton Brown's 2006 Feasting On Asphalt series. We had been meaning to go there for a long time, but just never got around to it. I was traveling through Toccoa on the way to Seneca, SC, saw the sign and wondered if that was the same place. Googled it, sure enough it was! The next day my wife and I went there for lunch. I had the baked chicken, butter beans, mashed potatoes w/ gravy, corn bread, and peach cobbler. My wife had the pork chop, fried okra, mashed potatoes w/ gravy, and peach cobbler. It was gooood! This is soul food at it's best, as far as I'm concerned. They have some interesting items on the menu that I definitely want to go back for, like sweet potato cobbler, chicken & rice, and the catfish. It only took 17 years to getting around to going there. We met Shirley (she runs the register), found out she's been there 23 years. If you're ever near Toccoa, check it out.

Perfect little hole in the wall café in downtown Toccoa area. Had the meat and three with a peach cobbler for $12.00 with a Diet Pepsi for $2.00. Go in, choose your food from hot bar and dine in or take out. I took out and glad I did. Huge portions!! Enough for dinner. The fried chicken livers were sooo good. Still crispy at 1:00pm. Mashed potatoes and gravy delightful. Field peas perfect, squash casserole divine!! And, oh the cornbread was light and perfectly cooked. The peach cobbler was heavenly. Shirley has got this soul food cooking down. I read where she helps out with a homeless ministry. The Lord has truly blessed her souls food. Must stop in...
