Memorial day weekend 2019 I am giving a 2 only because the staff was very friendly and efficient in getting our food out to us in a short amount of time. For reference, I was the only non-Japanese/Japanese-American person in our group. My step-son wanted Japanese food for dinner, so my mother-in-law picked this place because of the high reviews. Those, in our party, whom know what authentic Japanese dishes taste like all stated that it was not good and that they would not return. I have come to appreciate the flavors in Japanese dishes, and found that my dish, pork tonkatsu over rice, was not prepared the way I expected. First of all the overcooked egg covered the entire top of the bowl. Secondly, there was a sweetness in the dish, which could have come from the onion, but it was not expected. The food is edible but a sorry example of Japanese food in Torrance. I ordered a Katsu don meal, with a bowl of udon and tempura on the side.

The rice was Chinese long grain rice, not Japanese rice. This caused the sauce to pool at the bottom and not be absorbed. The onions were undercooked, and the pork loin was dry and tough. It was beaten so flat that the batter slide right off the loin with little resistance.

The udon claims to be made fresh, but tastes like frozen store bought udon. Even worse is the broth: watery and bland.

The tempura I ordered tasted bad. The batter tasted of old oil, and the ingredients themselves were undercooked since the batter was so thick.

Been coming here for years. The service is great. The food's great. Prices are great. This is my happy place. You can't go wrong with the manager special or the matsui bowl. If you are confused on what to get on the menu for your first time. You will get full. I've come back for birthday dinners and family lunches and dinners. Always been a hit with everyone I bring by here.
