The Local Bakery & Diner — Restaurant in Town of Alexandria

My boyfriend and I ate here last week while on vacation and had a rather disappointing experience. When we came in, a very nice waitress sat us at our tables and took our drink orders. She informed us that the drink I had requested was probably out, but she’d double check. She came back and let me know that the raspberry tea was out at the moment, so I asked for pink lemonade and she went to get our drinks. Or so I thought.

A few minutes later, a different waitress came to our table to get our drink orders. So we ordered our drinks again. This is when we were informed that their drink machine was down so they were out of pink lemonade but had regular lemonade. Which is what I ordered this time around.

We get our drinks and order our food with the second waitress. It takes a while as we keep having to repeat ourselves as the waitress kept forgetting what we said. Eventually she seemed to have successfully taken our order.

When we get our food, half of my boyfriends order is missing. The waitress nervously asked if something was missing. My boyfriend tells her what is missing and she goes “oh yeah. I forgot. We don’t have homefries. Did you want more toast or some extra meat or something?” My boyfriend and I both exchange a look but he ends up ordering a side of bacon. She goes “oh, we’re out of bacon. Do you want Canadian bacon?” So my boyfriend just says sure.

Eventually his toast she forgot comes out but no Canadian bacon. At this point, we’re over it so we just eat our food. My boyfriends eggs are cooked wrong despite having had to repeat how he wanted them cooked 3 time while we were ordering. My food is decent. Thank god I just ordered the French toast. We’re listening to the other tables around us and we hear a different waitress inform another table that they’re out of homefries, however she offers them a lot more options than we were offered as a substitute. They’re offered different fruits, French fries, other meat options, baked goods, etc. My boyfriend is disappointed because we would have ordered French fries if he’d known it was an option.

Finally the first waitress we had comes to take our plates and ask if we want to bill. We say yes and she goes off to get it. The second waitress is the one who returns with both the bill and two tiny slices of Canadian bacon and tells us to go pay at the counter. My boyfriend doesn’t even bother with the bacon and just goes to pay so we can leave. Almost $40 later, we get out of there, still hungry and baffled by the entire experience.

The food we did get to eat was good, but all the trouble of getting our meal wasn’t worth it. The first waitress was polite and helpful, the second waitress seemed like perhaps it was her first day or something. If customer service matters to you, I wouldn’t really recommend this place. They seemed like they were really struggling even on a slow day with more waitresses...

What a first time surprise! We have been eager to try this new 315 Local place with a new local restaurant option. We were thoroughly disappointed. We came in around 1pm for lunch with only one table filled. We were asked to sit on one side of the dining area which was fine and found a booth. Our server seemed very apologetic in nature and not sure if she knew what she was doing at first. We ordered drinks in a timely manner and then ordered food a few minutes later. We decided on an appetizer of onion rings as we were excited to eat. The onion rings were crunchy and good; the sauce was not good with them. We had ordered a plain burger with fries, Caesar chicken salad and the buffalo chicken sandwich with Mac and cheese. We got our food within 20 minutes of ordering. We were trying to figure out why the server had opinions of why were did not why cheese or all the toppings on the burger, I understand clarifying but we just wanted a plain burger with lettuce, seemed like an easy request. The burger came out with cheese on it which was disappointing, but we just took it off the sandwich as originally requested. The fries were the best part of the meal as they were hot and crispy. The Buffalo chicken sandwich with blue cheese was very sad, it was smaller than the bun, and a wimpy tomato slice on it and little lettuce. Added the blue cheese to the sandwich then part way through the chicken was gone and had a soggy brioche bun and blue cheese dressing. The upgraded of homemade Mac and cheese was a bigger disappointment. The white cheese was dried on the overcooked pasta and no sauce or creaminess factor. The Mac and cheese was a $5 upgrade, we would not ordered it if I had realized how bad was going to taste. So one good note is that the chicken Caesar salad was decent. The dressing was good, but the lettuce was way too soggy. The chicken breast was nicely cooked so that was nice to try and the Parmesan shavings were fresh and delicious. The server did get us refills once and asked one more time. The server was still hesitant or something the whole time. When we got the bill, that is when we realized what we ordered was way over priced for the quality of the order of food. We don’t mind spending extra money on great food, but $79 and onion rings with two soft drinks was shocking and overpriced for mediocre dining and food before tip. We normally pay at local places closer to $60 for three meals and extras with this style of food. My husband and I went for breakfast on the 4th of July. We wanted to go back to the place we had breakfast the morning after our wedding. We debated on eating out anywhere because of the busy weekend, we knew places would be packed, but we went. The place was very busy, large parties coming through the door and people waiting to be seated. We walked in, saw how busy they were, grabbed our own menus and seated ourselves. It took a minute to be noticed, but we noticed things were a bit hectic. We made our selections, read a local paper until our order was taken. Maybe 10 minutes, again, we could see things were hectic. While our order was being taken, we asked our waitress if the week had been busy (4th of July). She proceeded to tell us that she was training 2 new waitress, one who had never done it before, their 2 cooks had just quit (had to call in managers to cook) and the owner had recently passed away. They were struggling. BUT, our order came out very quickly and it was delicious. My point of this review, you never know what people are going through, be kind!

To Erin, who wrote the nasty review.... Hi, we are the ones who were sitting next to you, hearing all of your rude, nasty comments. My husband was the one who tried to tell you, as you were reading your post out loud, that the waitresses were in training and to have a little compassion... you left the review anyway. Couldn't have been too awful, your plate was empty, the plate next to you looked like it had been licked clean there was one plate that had a couple sausage links. I hope this review finds it way to you and teaches you to just BE KIND!
