Been here a few times since moving to Williamsville, I live ~5m walk away as a result I'm inclined to sample the Main St strip often.
The decor, like the clientele seems to have not changed for 50 year, as a result you have a ~30% chance of the room the staff placing you in smelling like Ammonia. I had to ask to be moved to another area of the restaurant due to the smell, the staff acted like they couldn't tell why I wanted to move my seat. Perhaps they are just noseblind to it.
If you go on a day when live music is playing, good luck having a conversation on the patio or the north east dining room. The bands are sometimes so loud it's comparable to Mooney's.
The staff tries to sell "upgrades" way too often to the point of it being annoying.
The meals are by no means "decadent" and as a result I feel the prices are not warranted for what the food is (average quality). A meal for 2 ends up being $70 (tip included), but I feel $50 would be more appropriate.
The bread is nothing special to speak of, room temperature, seemingly store bought burger buns, no oil or balsamic vinegar to add a variety of flavor.
The beer list is none-existent. If you're looking for hard ciders, sours, etc check out Griffon GastroPub on Transit Rd.
I've had the "French Onion au Gratin" soup twice at this point. Both times it was covered in a thick hard dry layer of cheese that is impossible to pierce with a spoon. It ends up being a soup with a cheese lid that you can either throw to the side or try swallowing whole if you can stomach it.
The crab cakes are cold in the middle, and look/taste like ones you could buy from the freezer section of Walmart.
The one redeeming quality I've come to find is "Our Famous Chicken Pot Pie" it's basically an inverted chicken pot pie, maximizing that gravy soaked pastry goodness.
I won't recommend The Eagle House, but I would for a lunch time chicken pot pie if the odor of Ammonia that somehow always pervades this...
Read moreIn response to your defensive response: never once did i walk around this restaurant. As I said in my initial review, i was game to make the most of it. Certainly doesn't address the rude staff or bad undercooked food. Happy that others in the party were happy with their food and had positive things to say. My experience was not the same.
Original review: Last minute decision to join friends already at the bar waiting for a table for us all. Arrived to find 3 tables in a row up by the bar. People were waiting an hour or more for tables because the front was being occupied by a very large group. Very loud. Tried screaming to talk to friends, just gave up and ate staring off into space. But ok, let's make the best of it. Ordered the "famous" fish fry from a surly sour puss of a waitress. Rolled her eyes when we asked questions. Sighed visibly when someone took a few seconds to decide on a beer, so he just ordered the first familiar beer on draft. Food arrived with a bit of a toss at the table, not waiting for me to move my obviously rude elbows off the table. Asked for ketchup which was slammed onto the table making me jump since I didn't see her coming from behind me. Guess she was in a rush to stand behind the bar with her frown. My fish fries fish was hot and soggy. Cut into a peice hoping for that satisfying crunch but wasn't there. At first I ate all of it but as it cooled, which fish does quickly I might add, I began to attempt to pick and scrape out the fish inside. Some of it had raw batter. Fries were very good and crunchy but not hot. Was not comfortable sending fish back via grumpy waitress. Wasn't offered a refill of gingerale, a glass of water, or a basic "how is everything?". My friend said his burger was really good, the one with the egg, and he also really enjoyed the crisp of the fries. Overall, a negative first impression and I'm not sure why anyone would wait at all for a...
Read moreMade a reservation, so no wait. We walked in and while it was loud, I expected it as I had been there before. I knew from my previous 2 times that it's a good place for food, or I thought so based on those 2 times. We got seated and ordered the Welsh Rarebit, got it and it was okay; I will fully take the its been a few years and I hyped it up in my mind to be more than what it actually was. Got soups and they were good, okay so we were looking forward to our entree. Everything was okay so far, so dinner should be good. He got the chicken pot pie, and I got the herb roasted half chicken, dinner arrives and we dig in. We both shared a questionable look at the pot pie, but okay its something different than we were expecting (we thought it was going to be like an actual pot pie), puff pastry with chicken pot pie filling put ontop okay so how did it taste? The pot pie was okay but it wasn't worth the price, okay so how was the other entree? Half a chicken, a small dipping cup of apple sauce, some mashed potatoes, and gravy; a nice classic dish that has homey vibes. Chicken was okay, wasn't anything too special, gravy was good, apple sauce was apple sauce, but my potatoes were bad. I found them off tasting and sour on my first few bites, okay I'll try some more to give it a chance, mashed potatoes were cold in the center, not room temp cold but actual cold, and still tasted off and sour. As we were waiting for the check, I asked my partner to try my mashed potatoes just to make sure it wasn't just me and my taste buds, he tried and agreed with me that they were sour and tasted off. Service was okay, nothing too special, place is loud and it was hard to hear my partner sitting about 2 feet away from me and thats fine and acceptable. What isn't, was our dinner. His was overpriced for what it actually was, to him at least, and mine was just disappointment for a place I held in my mind as good food on more...
