I've been hunting for good halal since I moved to Suffolk. Most of the places I’ve tried ranged from bad to mildly edible. Luckily, I found Flame Halal Gyro and it stands miles above the rest.
My usual order at any halal place is lamb over rice, with half rice/half salad, white sauce, and hot sauce. I’ve gotten the same thing in various boroughs for about 20 years. Up until now, my favorite place was a food truck on 86th street in Brooklyn. I have to say, that’s changed.
The white sauce at Flame Halal Gyro is creamy and light, while the hot sauce gives off a tang that compliments the spiciness. If I had to compare the hot sauce to a well-known brand, I’d say Valentina.
The lamb is soft and well-seasoned, while the veggies are fresh.
In fact, their food is so good that my 5-year-old daughter (a child who refuses to eat anything even resembling sauce) will scarf down a huge portion of the lamb over rice with white sauce. Her food usually lasts a few days, though, because they give a substantial amount for the cost.
On top of all that, the service is second to none. The husband-and-wife team that runs the restaurant is sweet and incredibly invested in how their patrons enjoy their food experience. While I was there, I was offered a taste of their new Butter Chicken dish – something I’ve never seen any other small establishment do. (It was glorious, by the way.)
I cannot recommend Flame Halal Gyro enough. If you do go, though, keep in mind that it’s a very small place with minimal seating. So, if you have a large party, it’s better to take...
Read moreI’m writing this review to bring attention to potential malicious review score manipulation, probably by a competitor that is jealous of Flame Halal’s glowing 5.0 rating and success.. First of all, they’ve been receiving nothing but 5 star reviews for over a year (200+ total reviews), giving them a very well deserved 5.0 rating for their outstanding food and friendly service.
In this 1+ year period, they received 4 (FOUR!) legitimate 4 star or under reviews. Recently, in a 24 hour window, they received 7 reviews, all 4 stars, all from accounts with no profile photos, similar total review numbers, the inability to check their profile to see their other “reviews” despite being a “Local Guide,” and all 7 reviews are very basic and similar, a few words, some of which just say “best food in city.” Best food in city? Come on, you’re not fooling us.
By leaving “positive” 4 star reviews it makes it less suspicious and harder to be reported by the owners. These reviews haulted once their rating reached a 4.9, coincidence? Who knows if this will keep happening or not, but I wanted to point out my observation.
If you’ve ate at Flame Halal and enjoy their food be sure to leave them an honest review, because this “review manipulation,” no matter who is doing it, is just downright wrong and totally not right. Believe the hype, try their food and see...
Read moreI hardly ever leave reviews for restaurants, but these people deserve a rave review! I was in the mood for a falafel one day and had heard about a new Halal place that had opened up in Waverly Plaza. So, I decided to give it a shot. Before ordering, the owner offered me a sample of the lamb and chicken, which was absolutely delicious. The owner made my falafel fresh for me. There was a short wait because of this, but it was worth it. A couple weeks later, I went back, and was absolutely shocked that he remembered me! I had only been in there once. This time, I tried the lamb and chicken combo gyro, and it was wonderful. Everything I've eaten here has been fresh and delicious. The owners are just about the sweetest people you will ever meet. They welcome you and make you feel like family, going above and beyond to make sure you are happy. The owner clearly takes extreme pride in his food and you can tell how happy he is to share it with his customers. On top of all this, the prices are reasonable and the portions are good. From now on, I am a loyal customer and this will be my go-to when I get the craving...
