I'm surprised this place doesn't have a better rating. I live in Chester and have been here probably 30-40 times.
I believe they cook food in the back to order, but they also have a cafeteria line up of ready to go food with 2-3 kinds of rice, black/red beans, a couple soups, potato/shrimp salad, fried/sweet plantains, and like 8 kinds of meats, this is my only experience with this place.
I'm sure the food to order is great and I really need to try give it a try, but I often don't have a lot of time, and to stop in and within a couple minutes have some amazing slow cooked food that I got faster than "fast food" options in Chester and got more food for the same or less than if I purchased "garbage food". I'll get a beef stew dinner with rice, with some beans and a small thing of sweet plantains on the side and its like ~18.56 with tax, it's enough to feed me and my gf. I'm 270 and I eat well enough to make any grandma proud, sometimes I've gone to mcd's for us and spent 25-30 and I don't feel as full as nelly's and I FOR SURE don't feel good or like I had a complete meal. I end up leaving half the sweet plantains for a late night snack, not sure if it's weird but I love them cold.
The to go food is almost always a hit, very rarely will I have some dry rice/meat depending on the time of day I went and when it came out of the kitchen, but over nearly 2 years of coming here they are on point 98% of the time and I assume when they cook smaller dishes to order they have a better control on the dish.
It's one of those places we order from 2 times a month easily, and when I'm lazy, I'm in there every week. Every kind of entree protein I've ever had from them was excellent, the beef on a good day is 11/10. If you get any stewed meats they'll usually ask if you want extra gravy on the rice, you probably know this already, but you...
Read moreBeware of this poor quality, tacky, run down establishment, unhygienic place, atrocious food joint and abysmal "restaurant"..... if I could give them ZERO stars I would... My fiancé had doordashed some dinner on 12/18/24 at 6:00pm. Food didn't get here till around almost 7:00pm. We both got the rice, BEANS, chicken combo with a soda. A cheese stick whatever is called and an alcapurria... I was starving so I quickly proceed to open my food. As I'm pouring my BEANS on top of the rice, I'm noticing an odd smell. We'll it's coming from the beans. I've cooked beans too many times like to know BEANS shouldn't smell like that. However, not only did they smell, but the looked and tasted SPOILED. Since it wasn't a lot of what I poured into my rice, I decided to eat it because I couldn't cook and a girl was STARVING. Biggest mistake Of My Life ...... Fast forward 6am, I have to go SPRINTING to the bathroom and empty...wait??? more like EXPLODE... my bowels on the toilet for 10 minutes straight... It is now 10:50 am as I write this and I've never in my life had experienced such stomach pain and diarrhea repeatedly....
MIND YOU, while all of this is happening I am taking care of my baby and breastfeeding ._. And I also gave my daughter some of the chicken before I knew the beans were spoiled. What if something had happened to HER instead of me?? Hell would've broken loose to say the LEAST and Nelly's Latin Restaurant wouldn't see the end of it. Please stay far away from this PREPOSTEROUS place, don't waste your money on this wanna be latin food "restaurant" they...
Read moreThis place is fantastic all across the board. I'm a huge fan of Latin cuisine, no matter the country, they all cook dishes that are unparalleled. This place epitomizes the distinct aromas, flavors, and quality of ethnic delicacies while offering an atmosphere and menu reminiscent of home and Mama's cooking(which is crazy considering I'm Ukrainian, not even remotely Latino😝). The staff is professional, courteous, and very friendly. Ask for Alby, she'll tend to you with her partner in crime, Gray. Both are absolutely intoxicating ladies who will make you want to stay just because of their entertaining and endearing personalities, which will likely make you want more food and drinks(brilliant marketing at it's finest😜). There is no alcohol served, but they do make signature beverages from scratch. I forgot the name of the one they had me try after the house lemonade(delicious btw🤤😋), but it was a coconut based almost creamy/yogurt like beverage. In conclusion, this place is one of the finest "unknown hole in the wall" locations I've been to in many moons. Don't believe anything I just said, simply come in and try anything your eyes gravitate towards, you will NOT be disappointed. Tell them Sark sent you and bon appetit! 🤘❤️🔥
P.S. They have the courage and enthusiasm to feature Ox Tail...... If you don't try it, you haven't lived. Their recipe is biblical. Not just the taste, but the meat slides off the bone like butter in a hot skillet. I'm not joking about the cooking, it's...
