Review of Cup and Saucer Diner, NY

As a bus group organizer, I've brought groups to the Cup and Saucer Diner in New York many times over the years. Our prior experiences were consistently outstanding — excellent service, delicious food, and prices that made sense for groups.

Recent Visit Under New Management: Disappointing Change

This year brought a starkly different experience. The diner, now under new management, imposed a fixed menu for groups, with meals priced at $19.99 each (including a soda with up to three refills), plus tax, a mandatory gratuity, and an additional $2.99 credit card processing fee. This fixed price was significantly above the standard menu pricing — for example, the Philly Panini with fries cost me $25 all-in, a dramatic increase from the regular $11.99 à la carte price.

Main Issues Encountered:

Rigid Pre-Ordering Process: The new management required that all group members preselect their meals and send in choices the day before. They also instructed us to place written meal tags at each table setting. I created clear, printed tags to keep things organized, but this process was unnecessarily time-consuming and poorly coordinated by the staff.

Poor Service Experience: Our waitress was argumentative, making a fuss over anyone whose tag was missing or had been altered by a guest who changed their mind. Many in our group were confused and uncomfortable with how the situation was handled — a stark contrast to the warm, efficient service we used to enjoy.

Quality of Food: The food ranged from mediocre to outright disappointing. My Philly Panini was so oily I couldn’t finish it, which echoed the sentiment of many in our group.

Feeling Overcharged: The requirement to order from a fixed, higher-priced menu (with hidden fees) led everyone to feel gouged, especially given the drop in food and service quality. This kind of pricing was never an issue in the past, when we could simply order from the standard menu.

Final Thoughts

Sadly, this is not the Cup and Saucer Diner we fondly remembered. The experience left our entire group dissatisfied, and I will not bring future tours here. The management’s new policies and dismissive service were a big letdown in comparison to the consistently wonderful experience we have at The Putnam Diner every year.

Bus groups, take note — This place is no longer group friendly. I recommend looking elsewhere for your group dining...

Had an awful experience on couple of visits and this last one was so bad that I wasn't sure if I was on a hidden camera show. I live in the UK but I visit my sister in Pine Bush a couple of times a year. The customer service in the UK is pretty appalling compared to the US so I don't expect much but WOW was this awful. It started literally when we walked in the door and asked for a table. The woman at the desk looked confused and put out at the idea of having to find us a table. Even crazier was that there were only TWO tables in use. The place was practically empty. She yelled at a waitress and then BOTH of them looked around like finding us a place to sit was as difficult as trying to figure out Einstein's theory of relativity.

When we were finally sat at the table nothing seemed easy. They didn't have one of the items we ordered and when we asked for a moment to find something else, it felt like an issue. My sister and I were pretty much laughing at this point because the whole thing was so weird.

The food came out and my omelette was honestly disgusting. The cheese wasn't melted and the home fries were soggy and brown. Wholly unappetising and just gross.

Needless to say this was the last time I'll ever visit this diner. It's a real shame, too, because it used to be amazing and I actually used to look forward to having a meal there when I was visiting. No...

I don't even want to give one star!!!! I took 2 of my grandkids there for lunch yesterday. They had lunch specials for about $12 . I chose chicken Parmesan and got mashed potatoes instead of pasta. (My choice) Well I couldn't even cut the chicken and it was so dried out that it didn't even look like chicken!!!! I couldn't eat it. The mashed potatoes were heated in a way that they were hard around the edges. I don't usually complain but I sure did this time. One of my granddaughters ordered the child's spaghetti which was probably the best of the 3 meals. The other had Mac and cheese which was not so good!!!! The waitress was apologetic and had another chicken Parmesan made for me to take home. I told her it wasn't her fault. Then the girls got ice cream with their meals. Well the one told me it was very icy and then the other showed me that there were ice cubes in the bottom of her dish. I asked the waitress why and she said they had a problem with the freezer!!!! So why would they even serve it????? The bill was just over $35 for food that was horrible!!!! I still left the waitress a good tip because I knew it wasn't her fault so I ended up spending over $40 for an awful lunch!!!!! Then when I went to pay the hostess left me waiting while she was doing a phone order. Finally someone else came over to take the money!!! Never again will I ever go cup and saucer...

Upon sitting at our table, our group noticed a foul smell. Upon looking up, we saw a section of the ceiling covered in mold. A strong scent of bleach hung in the air, I’m sure in an attempt to clean the mold, and as it was making out party Ill, we asked to move to the other side of the restaurant. Yes, we should have walked out, but we thought: surely it can’t get any worse? We were wrong. Look, I just wanted eggs and toast ok? The waitress very snarkily moved our seats, took our order. Upon getting my order I was happy! Finally, my hunger would be sated. Alas! As I dug into my home fries, out spilled a fly onto my eggs (see exhibit 1). I took it to our delightful waitress, who looked at me, deadpan, straight in the eye, and she asked me “would you like us to remake it?” I was floored with incredulity, and responded with all the decorum I could muster, and replied, that I absolutely would like them to remake it. Well, one meal later, that I couldn’t finish (see you later appetite), and the check came. (Side note, my lovely friend’s turkey wrap with cheese came sans cheese) The waitress would not comp the meal; to her this all seemed fairly par for the course. So please dear reader, do what we didn’t, trust your gut, and don’t hesitate to turn around and walk (run) far away from this place

Nostalgia at its finest! THE GOOD: This classic diner is the cutest. It plays on our town’s history with the ufo/alien decor & signage which we all love. Totally a family joint with decent prices and portions. Waffles are yummy, they always accommodate my extra fixings on my waffle. Coffee is always fresh, never burnt. I also enjoy on their eggplant wrap with their fries. Fries are always piping hot. Stuff is made to order. The staff is always attentive and super kind. Service is always top notch. They do serve alcohol, but I usually go for breakfast/brunch- so I don’t partake. Always clean. THE SHAMEFUL: Not much at all here. They run their establishment like a fine tuned machine. Everyone is happy at this spot. They would benefit from a few minor updates like new ceramic mugs/plates as the last few times I went they had chips. I can’t think of anything else. Great job folks! **Edited only to add picture from when I first moved to Pine Bush, NY.**

I recently went there for lunch, as soon as we stepped foot in the door the waitress looked upset from the get go. She immediately rushed us to a table an threw menus at us. We could tell she was in a hurry either to leave or just get us out of there as quick as possible, she was rushing us so much honestly I was afraid to even order my food or add anything extra to the order. Food was decent, but the service was really lacking. Before we even asked for the check she already had it on the table along with a to-go container, we didn't ask for either. Not sure what the rush was as there wasn't many people in the restaurant. Above our heads there was a ceiling tile with a bunch of black mold on it.... Not really a good look. For a diner that's called cup and saucer and famous for extraterrestrial sightings this place is nowhere near out-of-this-world. 2 stars because the mazzi sticks were ok.
