My very first impression of this establishment was "Wow". What had used to be this dark, dank and grungy bar had transformed under new ownership in to a beautifully inspiring, light and airy, tastefully whimsical establishment. As we were promptly offered seating at any available table in the restaurant, I could not get over how elegant the decor was. The umbrellas, colorfully floating from the ceiling. The repurposed bar adorned with bright and plump succulents, and accentuated with a multitude of well placed glass vases and silken floral. My first impression of Lime House was, "this place feels like someone's home, well lived in and cared for." Our waitress, whom I later learned was one of the family members who owns the establishment, greeted us with a beaming smile. She welcomed us very warmly. She discussed the menu items, and very clearly explained to me what the difference between a traditional curry and Burmese curry was. She kept mentioning her mother, the head chef in their kitchen. "Most curry has a bite to it, mom's curry is a bit more subtle, more inviting and wholesome." Right then and there you knew dinner was going to be delicious, because it was going to be a home cooked meal made by the matriarch of this family. We placed our orders, myself opting for the garlic noodles this round. Our waitress came back shortly with a complimentary offering of Vegetable and Lentil soup which was superb. I frankly could eat an entire dinner of that soup. While we waited for moms home cooked meal, we watched another chef delicately and carefully craft sushi. Real crab, real ginger. None of the fake processed foods you find in grocery stores or other establishments. As it was slow, our waitress talked with us for a good bit of time. I asked her about the decor, learned they decorated it themselves (congrats, you decorated it so invitingly). I learned a little about the family, how they used to cook as well as sushi for another local establishment. I even learned that the family is in fact from Burma! Our appetizer of steamed chicken dumplings arrived. Smooth and silky with a nice relenting bite, delicately flavored with green onion and ginger. Those didn't last long, just too delicious. Our main course arrived roughly 15 minutes after we placed our order. For $12, my plate was huge. A very generous portion of delicate golden egg noodles similar to a linguini, married with this crisp golden brown garlic and finely diced bits of perfectly cooked chicken. The dish was astounding. I've never had garlic noodles before, nor much Japanese for the matter. I was highly impressed. I savored it well, but consumed quickly because it was just so yummy. We met Mom, and graciously thanked her for the delicious home cooking. The food, it was just so warm and as cliched as it may sound, you can taste that it was cooked with love, as if you were a part of her family. When we finished our meal and asked for a split check, our waitress said of course but we aren't done yet. I was a little curious as to what she could mean, but she quickly exclaimed "Mom wouldn't want anyone to leave without a desert. It's complimentary!" Now of course you can't say no to that. While it wasn't a full desert, it was this delicate one bite bit of ice chocolate ice cream called Mochi, drizzled with a tart raspberry sauce. Obviously not a full sized desert but completely appreciated as a complimentary sampler. It looked as if it were prepared by a 4-star chef at a gourmet steak house. Absolutely impressed. After we had paid our checks we wished the entire family a good night, to which they all warmly thanked us for our patronage.
Lime House is a brand new Burmese-Japanese restaurant in Williamsville. It has been open for about three weeks now, and is an absolute hidden gem in the plaza on Evans street.
5/5 Stars. An absolute must go. We will be...
Read moreWith all the positive reviews, our experience must be a one-off. Our biggest issue had to do with my boyfriend's order. We informed the waiter of his specific food allergies and the first time the food came out, it was clear the chef didn't pay attention. We ordered the seared salmon with no rice, no garnishes, and it came out on a bed of rice with garnishes. We thought, that's ok, mistakes happen and sent it back. It came back again with just the seared fish but it had black pepper on it when we had asked specifically for no seasoning (my boyfriend is extremely allergic to black pepper). The waiter asked the chef and the chef said the black flakes were from being seared and not seasoning. All of us tasted the seasoning and there was definitely black pepper and my boyfriend had a pretty bad allergic reaction. Also, though the fish was seared on the outside, it was still frozen on the inside.
On top of all this, we waited a long time for the food to come out. My boyfriends first fish order came out about 15 minutes after we ordered then about 5 minutes later my uncles order came out then another 5 minutes mine came out. What was so strange was we had both ordered the same vegetable stew. I'm not sure why it took so long for the same dish to be brought out. The other strange thing was after we sent back the first fish order (which took so long to come out) the second order came out in about two minutes (and was still frozen...).
Overall, though the waiter was very nice (though he did forget the tea I ordered, but was very apologetic), it seemed the chef did not care at all about the food and it showed in the result. The vegetable stew, though tasted ok, wasnt anything amazing. I've been to a few other Burmese restaurants (one Burmese restaurant in San Francisco is my favorite restaurant of all time), this one in terms of taste was disappointing.
From all the other reviews I cant help but think we went on an off day, but I'm still disappointed and wouldn't reccomend to friends or family. I would have given one star but I am appreciate that they didn't charge us for the fish and the...
Read moreCame here with my girlfriend for the first time today and was thoroughly impressed with everything. We decided to sit at the bar instead of wait for one of the tables (since it was pretty busy when we went). The bartender/sushi chef/owner and her son were super kind and personable, which is what I love from a local restaurant.
For appetizers, we started off with some steamed dumplings, which were super well seasoned and flavorful. We also had some crispy spring rolls, that were huge and packed with filling (and not to mention extremely delicious, especially with their dipping sauce).
For our entrees, my gf had a tuna avocado roll that she loved (and that's saying something because she's a big sushi person and is very honest when she has a less than stellar roll). I had the duck ramen, which was unbelievable. The broth was salty and delicious, while the duck that came with it had perfectly crispy skin with super tender and juicy meat inside. It was also loaded with noodles and veggies, which I love in my ramen (as opposed to being mostly broth).
But the coup de gras was the signature crepe cake, which is made in house. It's basically this layered stack of super thin crepes with a light creme filling and a raspberry sauce to top it off. This thing was so light and airy, while not being overbearingly sweet. It was an absolute dream, and I'll be damned if I don't get it absolutely every time I go.
I love finding local restaurants that are family run and just produce super high quality food. They will absolutely get my business again, and I'll be telling all my friends and family to go try this place out because it's an...
