Tasty food, polite and quick service. I unfortunately had a bad experience, which I will relate.
I ordered Chirashi, 29$. Very tasty. Totally worth it.
Then I ordered a Red Dragon (the menu says it is shrimp tempura on the inside, tuna on the outside). When it came out it had a sauce on it. I tried a piece, thinking maybe it was soy sauce, but It was a sweet sauce of some sort. I didn’t like my first impression.
I tried blotting off all of the sauce with a napkin and tried another piece, but it was soaked into the rice. Not my preference, and there is no mention of the sauce on the menu.
I told them I don’t like it and would like to order a new one with no sauce. They brought another one a few minutes later and did not remove the old one.
When I asked for the check they asked if I would like to have the first dragon roll boxed up. I refused but thanked them for the gesture.
When the bill came, they explained that they were only going to charge me half for the first roll.
I said thank you, and left a very bad tip (I’m sorry it hurts the server, but it is my only recourse at demonstrating my satisfaction), along with this review.
It’s a pity, I would have easily left a 20% tip otherwise, and they would have earned my repeat business.
I’m sure anyone who does not make the mistake I made will be very satisfied with this restaurant. The sushi quality is worth the...
Read moreShintaro is hands down the best sushi restaurant on Long Island and I would put their menu up against the very best of NYC. My wife and I have been going to Shintaro since it first opened around 8 years ago. The food and service has always impressed. I've brought all of my extended family and friends there, and now all have become frequent customers
The menu offers something for everyone, whether you are trying sushi for the first time or have it 3x a week you will not be disappointed. The combinations that the chefs come up with are amazing and always have the freshest ingredients. Can't go wrong with any of the appetizers; my wife loves both the pepper tuna or yellowtail jalepeno, while the scallops (off menu) are one of the best dishes I've ever had. There's something for everyone on the specialty rolls, but the namesake Shintaro roll is a must try.
The ambience is simple and intimate, perfect for a small dinner but we've had great times with parties of 10+. And as said above the staff will make you feel at home.
Shintaro is a must visit for all...

I'm pleased to report that Umi has now been renamed to "Shintaro Asian Bistro" and the owners (Peter and Maggie) are continuing to serve delicious sushi (and other things) just as they had been doing across the street for many years. In fact, there are even more wonderful things on the menu than before. Shintaro Asian Bistro remains our weekly go-to for a lovely dinner and we're very happy about that. 😊
Update: September, 2019
I'm sad to report that this location has permanently closed. However, I'm also somewhat happy to report that the owners have purchased "Umi Asian Fusion", across the street on Covert Avenue. I'm looking forward to what the "new" restaurant has to offer. Umi is currently open for business. Perhaps they will change its name to "Shintaro" at some point... Excellent, fresh sushi. Friendly staff. It's our weekly go-to for a...
