La Roma Pastry Shop — Restaurant in Town of Islip

It takes a lot for me to write this review, but I am very unhappy with the service that I received today. Two days ago, my daughter picked up my absolute favorite birthday cake she had ordered for me from La Roma, a cannoli cake with heavy rum. We cut the cake that night and we didn't taste any rum in it, but surely thought that maybe we just had not had enough of the cake. We had some last night and sure enough there was no rum in it. For a cake that was supposed to be heavy rum, this had nothing. I look forward to this cake every year and I loved getting it from La Roma. I called the shop to address my concerns this morning and was met with the rudest manager. After speaking with a very nice girl behind the counter, she told me she had to talk it over with her manager. The manager got on the phone with me and treated me as if I were lying about the rum. Why would anyone lie about rum in their birthday cake? she demanded to know who took the order and I told her that I didn't have that part of the receipt. However, I still had my copy of the order slip and told her that knowing who took the order wasn't necessary as the order slip clearly states heavy rum. She said that if it stated heavy rum, there would be rum. I told her I understood that but, there was no rum in it. She was very dismissive towards me, and then said it could just have been overlooked. It was one of the worst attitudes I have ever experienced. She was rude and abrupt. Ive been here now 3xs. Their rainbow cookie cheesecake is different and very good. I got some cookie trays, and a good portion of the cookies were stale. I also got another cake and the server told me it was one thing and when I had it had my event I came to find it wasn't remotely what they said it was. I was very disappointed. I did get their prosciutto bread which was very good along with their lemon cake & carrot cake. Their chocolate cake was nothing special. This place seems to be hit or miss. To whom it may concern; Your reply to my review is rather condescending. Im sorry to say, but the cookies that I presented were a disappointment to the people I presented them to. It was more than "a few" cookies. Plus why would I call a head of time to resolve a cake type issue? I go to the bakery, see what you have, and I purchase based on what I'm told. Perhaps the answer is for you to train your staff. What if your staff gave me a cake I or one of the people it was for was allergic to? Then what? You'd suggest calling before buying? These people now have a less than good review of your establishment based on your products, and these people then will either not go you, or when asked have not so great things to say. Located this bakery on Google, and working right down the road it was a convenient choice. However, that was the only convenient or positive part of the entire experience. I needed a birthday cake for my wife and purchased a chocolate 7” fudge cake along with 2 chocolate frosted donuts as a back up given that my 2 sons aren’t big fans of cake. Well… the cake was extremely dry and either a bad recipe or just old. Half was eaten as not to waste it, and the other half went in the trash. As mentioned, my sons are not big cake fans and after trying a piece of cake they opted to have the donuts instead. Upon opening the bag and plating the donuts I noticed that each were hard as a rock and not eatable. They we’re the last two of a kind on the tray which should have been a warning sign that they may have been left over or old. However, one would think that the staff would have discarded them rather then sell them. Needless to say my sons now had nothing to eat in celebration of their moms birthday. So, 1/2 a cake went in the trash along with the donuts, making it a less than enjoyable experience. I’m not one to complain and try not to write negative reviews but given the experience and how it negatively impacted a celebratory occasion I figured it was only fair.
