This is such a hard review to leave because we are also restauranteurs.
My wife and I wanted some nice hearty salads for lunch so we looked up a few places. We ordered two salads (the mango salad and the arugula, mango, duck walnut, goat cheese salad—never had there been a more literal name for a salad which is fine—just hard to order on the phone).
We were told these two salads were going to be 35 minutes. Even during a busy rush (which would seem strange at 2:05), two salads shouldn’t take 35 minutes.
What makes it worse is that the Arugala Duck Salad (for short) is described as tradition “New Orleans” style salad. We lived in New Orleans for 4 years and ate all over the city. It’s a culinary mecca. This is not close to anything traditional to New Orleans.
The salad was quite small for a $21 salad. Two salads totaled $56 which we don’t mind paying based on the food description. I’m in the food and beverage industry so I know the cost of goods. This was literally two handfuls of Arugal, some cubed mangos, a blob of coated goat cheese, and waaaay overcooked tiny slivers of duck breast. I understand the rising cost of business in this industry, but I could never to this to my patrons.
The duck was embarrassingly bad and the beef on my wife’s salad was so overcooked, it was almost inedible. The duck breast slivers were not only small and overcooked but rubbery. That’s strange because the fat wasn’t rendered properly so the skin was gelatinous and chewy so it being overcook was just a lack of care or lack of training for the cook who cooked the duck breast. The packaging was so half hearted for $56 for two salads.
This was rough. I’d be willing to adjust my review with a response from the owners. But, as far as first impressions go, we won’t order again based off this experience.
So unfortunate in flavor and overpriced...
Read moreSo we received a gift card and decided to use it. Let me share our experience, first time there, with it being the Yelling Goat. The entrance was a little confusing, but not bad. Walked past the nice looking bar, not sure who to talk to about getting seated.
Got seated, but where we sat, needs to be 86'd. It's a tiny little table, where you don't feel comfortable sitting at. People walking right by you or behind you really close, pretty regularly. That table is located in between 2 rooms, the bar and a side room.
The food. Portion size is good. Got the 8oz steak. It was seasoned well, but it was a little dry. Mashed potatoes were good. The house salad was ok. My wife got the Cesar salad which was good. She also got the turkey a la king, which was good, but we couldn't tell if the turkey was from a can, or from where. They do have a good selection of brews.
The waiter. Tyler. Young kid, but very good. He's an asset to that place. He was the reason this review got 3 stars instead of 2.
The ambience. Pretty cool. However, again, our table was not an enjoyable place to be. Plus, another party, had small kids in another room, come over, to a ride on horse, that was about 10 feet away from where we were seated. Great to have little kids yelling while you're trying to have a nice dinner. So that spoiled our time even more. The owner, was sitting right near us at a large table, by herself, calculating the days take/responding to emails/surfing the web. I would think she'd take the small table we were at, so no one would experience what we did.
Could've been one of those off nights, but not sure we'll be going back. The place seems to be doing fine whenever we go by. But that's it in a nut shell for our visit. Hopefully you have a better experience than...
Read moreWe had not eaten here - or at really any restaurants - since just before the pandemic. On the morning of Friday, 7.29.22, I was looking for a restaurant to dine in with our 2 year old daughter. I checked TYG as the wife and I liked it pre-pandemic, pre-child (and we were both fond of Tantalus). Once I saw that it has a menu for kids, I called and was fortunate to receive same day reservations for the 3 of us.
We arrived at the designated time - 5pm - to an already fairly full establishment. We were promptly seated and throughout the meal our server was friendly and attentive. They have a great selection of beers and I enjoyed several of the draft offerings. As for the food, we skipped the kiddy menu this time and ordered a fig pizza, a prosciutto pizza, fried calamari, and I had the prime rib. Everything was delicious. We recently ate at Left Bank and while the style of food is different, I thought TYG outclassed it in both quality of service and flavor of food.
For those with little ones, they even have a coin operated, mechanical horse for the kids to ride. We utilized it several times last night, when our daughter was a bit cranky / restless. It certainly changed her mood! A pair, who I believe to be ownership, were near the horse and joked around with me about the next step, the costs associated with live horses.
In all, everyone who we encountered was friendly, the service great, the food honestly priced and fantastic. Heck, if not coming for dinner but just to have a few beverages, their bar area is nice and the beer selection blows most other bars out of the water.
Now that our daughter is vaxed and we’re going out again, we will definitely be coming here fairly...
