Recently moved to the area about a 6 months ago I am Native Little Italy and Bay Ridge Italian fella. I have been blessed my whole life to have some of the best pizza in New York just walking out my Apartment Building and house. From living less than 5 mins away from Lombardi’s Pizza in Manhattan too Spamoni Gardens in Bensonhurst. I was dreading leaving the best pizza in U.S. my opinion. We have had property Ulster County and no pizzeria, from Kingston to Ellenville to Marlboro has ever been good. Mediocre at best. Maybe 2 stars to be nice.
My family and I first tried Benny’s Pizza on moving day about 6 months ago. We decided to give Benny’s a shot than the other one‘s near by.
First walking in, I was a little skeptical at first; with the country music playing in a Pizzeria I was eh’ never seen that before. Then again I had to remember I am not in little Italy or Brooklyn anymore.
The place a had a nice home feeling to it and the counter girls were extremely nice EXCEPT for ONE of them. Probably a high schooler. She looked miserable or she didn’t want to be and kinda had a sense of entitlement which is automatic turn off for a restaurant in my opinion. Then again high schooler, I was too cool school 11 years ago. Lol I have been coming periodically a couple times a week and have not seen her since which is nice.
Anyway luckily, I was helped by one of the counter girls who always seems to be there and full of just good spirit. Always friendly and outgoing. She must be the main counter girl cause she doesn’t make you feel like a piece cash.
I ordered a large Pie and 8 or something along those lines of garlic knots. Now these are not just garlic knots!!! These are GIANT and well seasoned; not overly greasy and that nice little crunch on the outside with soft on the inside. The Pizza perfectly sauced and the cheese taste fresh. The pizza is a perfect size not small like Picnic Pizza and their sauce sometimes has giant spots of just sauce.
The only negative I would say about this place is, the workers in the back. I’m use too even small joints in Chelsea, the village and soho etc… there is some of the family that cooks at pizza place. That are heavily focused on making good food and working hard for the business. There is cultural differences too. When I had family come up, and friends visiting we went to grab a pie and food.
We did not appreciate being started at and felt eyes if we looked at the pizzas or the pictures. Some of us can understand Spanish as well. We didn’t like being I guess joked about. It happens periodically. Which sucks because we really enjoy the food and the other employees. Even neighbors that come in and talking about the area our kids and the school etc…
That’s something that needs to be worked is the cooks, they even say stuff in Spanish about the other employees.
Still wanna give 5 stars, for the business and the employees who work up front and Benny for having a slice of...
Read moreIf there was a way to give negative stars, I would. It is a typical local pizzeria, EXCEPT - the owner is stuck-up, marginally racist towards people of color and EXTREMELY SARCASTICALLY RUDE. My friends and I (7 of us) stopped by here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We got there, fairly empty, we took a seat, decided to place our order. One of my friends went over and was listing the things we wanted to get, when the owner asked him to repeat cause he didn’t “understand” simple spoken english. We placed the order and waited. It had been around half an hour after which we got quite hungry - considering we were “stopping by” mid-trip for a “quick bite” , I went over to ask “How long would our food take?” (it was only three different pastas and a salad with onion rings)- a fair question considering everyone who came after us, got their orders , some even left. The person at the cash register responded with an arrogant “You see my guys are cooking” I asked again, “Can you please tel l me a general estimate as to how much time it might take?” WITH A SMILE. POLITELY. ASKING SINCE WE WERE HUNGRY. the guy responded with a very cocky “TWO DAYS OKAY? GO SIT” and pointed his finger at my table. We were all aghast. Very disappointing at how poorly they treated us since we were a group of 7 brown people, just chilling and trying to get our food and leave. If you aren’t tolerant of basic customer questions then don’t have a restaurant. if you aren’t tolerant of people of colour THEN WRITE AT THE ENTRANCE THAT YOU ARENT POLITE TO ANYONE OTHER THAN WHITE PEOPLE.
We are in 2023 and it was horrible how they treated just our table quite rudely. The prices were high considering the quality and taste of food. JUST WONT RECOMMEND.
I know the owner is going to respond rudely to this review as I have read some previous low reviews on Google for this place. But I HAD to write about it.
The place has a newspaper article from many decades ago that read “this place serves kindness” or something - the irony has me...
Read moreTo anyone who has left less than a 5 star review for this place- BIG EYEROLL. I’d like to start by saying that the owner is such a delight! We had the pleasure of meeting Benny in his restaurant today. He is a passionate, selfless, hard working man who loves what he does and gives back to the community AND THAT is something to be admired and respected. Sadly, some people have nothing better to do than give bad reviews to business’s that have been operated by a family that loves their community for 30+ years because their pepperoni was upside down. The staff were all happy and helpful. We ordered a Large Sicilian chicken bacon ranch pizza and a gluten/dairy free veggie and chicken pizza. When our order first came out I noticed that my pizza had cheese on it. I ((kindly)) let Benny’s daughter know and she immediately offered to remake the pizza. I told her that they did not need to remake the pizza and that i would just have a salad. She insisted on remaking the pizza AND and a beautiful salad made for me. I was also brought a grilled chicken breast to have with the salad. The veggies, chicken and dressing was SO GOOD! Benny told me that the balsamic vinegar at dressing was made in house. I asked if i could buy some and he told me that they did not sell it but gave me two additional cups to take with me. I was still eating when my husband and girls had finished. The girls were offered ice cream once they finished. Two homemade cannolis were brought out with my brand-new pizza! We were sent home with so much food and treats at not additional cost to us. Im so grateful for the love that we were shown today. It was a wonderful experience and we will be sending recommendations to anyone we know visiting the area. Im telling you all of this to say “Don't be a jerk and you might be surprised at how people want to treat you.” There are good people in the world and we need to be...
